Btw totally off topic but did you ever get any money for your MailOnline video in the end?

I tried to go the angle of getting them to fix the past wrongs and loss of exposure by getting them to use my videos in future with proper credit, of which I gave them future permission provided they did so, but who knows if they'll actually do that. Probably not.

Other than that I managed to squeeze £100 out of them.

Not enough to topple the empire.

I adore Edinburgh. Fun fact: I'm shooting a wedding there next month.

It's great ey! Give me a message if you find yourself with an hour to kill and fancy a pint

Absolutely stunning photos! :)

edit: dan do you not have a website/tumblr/blog/other to follow?

Thanks, always appreciated!

You know, I don't - probably why I post in the creative gallery so often!

I've been meaning to set up something where I can put all my bits and bobs as I do them. I have a tumblr but haven't found a free theme which I like enough to use (All the plain white minimal ones seem to oddly display, resize images weirdly, or generally ugly).

I'll add one to my sig if I ever stick to anything for more than a few minutes!

Been starting to some work and more general snaps on instagram since they upped their image sizes insta but who knows if I'll stick with it

Haha not quite sadly. Still, good work getting that, it's more than they normally pay

Be rude to not post a couple pics while I'm here

^ Looks great! Always thought I'd fear for my camera breaking from the gunk if I took it to something like that - was it aright

I ended up taking my zoom lense and staying as far away as I could to avoid the paint. By the end though I still found paint dust on my camera so I'm glad that I didnt risk going closer.

Those are really great @dan\-likes\-trees

What are some basics that a beginner can do to try and capture the detail in the distance like that? Whenever I go out to the peaks or take a pic of a good view in my city, I'm always disappointed with how unexciting it looks in my picture compared to how it did in person. Or is there nothing I can do without buying bigger and more expensive lenses?

@dan\-likes\-trees

Great pics again! Like the 2nd and 3rd especially.

About anaglyph: There's a science behind, but it's mostly me winging it with my compact camera. Tripods help (even more than usual), but my gorillapod broke, so it's often about having a steady hand and a bit (or a lot) of luck. You take one picture, then shift horizontally to the right, and take a 2nd. Then remove the colour channels in post-processing, and combine them. It's probably less hard with "normal pics", as with macro shots the shift is just a few millimeters or less, plus there's a minimal change in angle.. I like to do macro shots, because that's the only way to get depth of field in my old compact camera, plus I have toys available, but no Brazilian super models unfortunately.

@Shorty

That's hard to say without showing examples.

If I'd hazard a guess, the views simply look better in your mind than that they actually do. View of a nice city != nice view of a city. Take pictures when the lighting is more interesting, like the golden hour, or blue hour or even at night, if you have good artificial lighting, and your camera can handle it.

But again, it's better if you show us an example first.

Anyway, I ordered some film, but it looks like the shop I ordered from isn't exactly trustworthy.. I'm not sure if I'll get it from them.

Do you have to move the camera by the same distance as the distance between people's eyes?

Cheers brahh!!

First three pics I posted were taken on my phone (S6) so that kind of snap should be well within the range of a standard camera. The S6 has a wider focal view than my camera lenses.

At the risk of giving away all my secrets... To be honest a huge amount of it is in the post processing. In Lightroom the 'clarity' and 'sharpness' sliders go a long way to bringing back the detail between colours that you can lose in jpegs out of the camera. Some people say it feels light cheating but it's really no different than using a darkroom properly with film photography. It's also what the .raw format is there for, if you have a dslr. You have a lot more scope to play around with exposure, colour temperature, etc etc afterwards.

I'm sure there are free alternatives to LR (the Lux slider in instagram produces a similar effect) but I'd say Lightroom is maybe worth the cash if you're into photography. Or get it by other means of course..

Here's the original of one of those images in raw. Huge difference!

For scenery pictures, consider where you spot focus to set the exposure and stuff (focusing on landscape can blow out / overexpose the sky, sky focusing can lose detail on landscape). To be honest the landscape preset settings on most cameras do a pretty good job. And obviously a tripod will give you more detail. And as Smeagol says, it's all about the lighting angle (dat golden hour)

Hope that helps!
