Region Lock

I hope it's region-free because

1) If it's delayed till 2007 in Europe it would make no difference as you could import a USA one and play UK games on it (at a later date).

2) Some of the most quirky titles from Japan may not come out in the UK, so i like to import them!

So yeah i really really hope it's Region-Free.

:awesome:

Nah, I like resurrecting threads from the dead. It can interesting looking at users long since left.

Like @solitanze the threads creator who it seems got himself banned. I think he's a mod over on the IGN forums. That's if they're the same person.

Seems like the ban hammer hit quite a few members that posted in this topic. I think I was a mod back then. It could have been me. :D

Cheesemeister over on Gaf has gave a rough translation of what was mentioned in the investors meeting.

Q7: At the financial results briefing 6 months ago, you said that you would consider removing region-locking in response to a question asking about it. Could you please provide an update on the progress of that deliberation?

A7: Iwata: Removing region-locking from current game machines presents various issues, so we don't consider that to be very realistic. However, regarding NX, given the customer feedback and proposals from the market, while nothing has been decided yet, we're currently investigating internally what problems there would be in realizing it. You can think of that as the current situation. I understand your desire, so I'd like to look at it optimistically going forward.

So the NX may be region free. Still don't really know what the issue is? If a region free machine was such a bad thing then surely Sony and Microsoft would have locked their machines. I mean, they were both region free last gen as well.

Ya, just heard the news. I welcome it if it does happen. I would always want UK PAL games where possible but for those games like Excitebots, still don't know why that didn't come here, it gives us a choice to import.

The 360 wasn't totally region free, it was determined by the game.

I predict they'll do 'soft' region locking. You'll be able to buy and play games from any region, but features like Miiverse, online multiplayer and leaderboards will be disabled.

I hope not, there's no reason to do that really. We can access the Japanese Miiverse right now for instance so that would actually be removing something.

Indeed but the amount of publishers that used this option for big games were few and far between. Being able to import and play Ghostbusters months before its release over here was great.

I don't think this would be much of an issue if Nintendo treated the west equally. Their big titles often don't get released at the same time in the US and Europe, yet you get big titles from other companies, like Halo,Gears, Uncharted etc. all releasing at the same time.

I ran down to my local Grainger Games after I found out they had the import version the day it was released in the US, that was great.

They have gotten better and we often get games before the US occasionally, they do still have problems getting out games in a reasonable time frame , Kirby games in particular and usually Atlus games.

I'm a little sad we have to wait until 2016 for Fire Emblem If when Japan gets it the end of next month.

It would be nice if we could switch eShop regions easily on the NX systems as that would make importing so much easier and possibly cheaper.

I still have doubts it will be. Iwata is making it sound like region free is some major headache and lots of work.

Well it's a positive sign that it's still undergoing consideration :)

Let's just hope that they make the sensible choice now... Considering that they're the last holdouts of region locking, there really is no excuse anymore...
