Jimbob Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 Decided to give the Bioshock 2 multi-player a shot earlier. It's not too bad.
Shorty Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 The Bard said: Why are gamers so obsessed with sales figures, marketing and financial bullshit? Is it because they use it as some sort of data to formulate a predictive evaluation of what they might be playing in future, or the trajectory gaming is taking? I really fucking doubt this, since most gamers are too stupid to calculate the timing of their next toilet break, but still, why? I don't get it. They talk more about sales figures than the actual content of the games. Maybe because good sales means more money for the company behind it, thus better content in the future? Or that if it's selling well, it's worth buying because it's not going to be dropped in 6 months like HD DVD? Nice move though, insulting the intelligence of the average gamer on a gaming forum.
Aimless Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 I think what The Bard was saying is that gamers fixate on sales numbers more than the followers of any other medium. Just look at how pervasive the reporting of NPD figures has been; it isn't a case of highlighting a game that has done unexpected or unprecedented numbers, it's a monthly check-in. There's certainly a genuine element of seeing if a game you enjoy is seeing the retail success it deserves, but how many people following the GT5 figures have any intention of even playing the game? How many people were waiting for Kinect to do badly so they could crow about it? From a publishing perspective sales figures are more important now than they used to be, there's a much higher barrier to profitability in the HD era and the general quality of games has improved so much the market for good, solid games is more contested. However, I don't think you can draw an exact parallel between sales' importance from a financial perspective and their pervasiveness in consumer discussion.
Cube Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 (edited) http://rewards.xbox.com/ Sign up and you'll get Microsoft Points for various things like renewing your subscription, buying certain stuff from the XBLM and taking part in surveys. It costs nothing, and you can just carry on buying as you usually do and get a few free points to spend on stuff. Edit: It's US/UK only. Edited December 1, 2010 by Cube
Murr Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Just done this, wonder how often the surveys will be.
Cube Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Murr said: Just done this, wonder how often the surveys will be. It's a "Quick Survey" each month. And you only get 20MS Points for it.
Aimless Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 The rewards might be pretty menial but I can see them being useful. I'm sure we've all had those moments where we're left with 780MSP or another inconvenient number.
Shorty Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Agreed 2 months, 2 questionnaires and I'll be able to afford a 400MSP game.
Llama Juice Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 @The Bard, some of us are trying to get into the video game industry. Generally knowing as much as you can about that industry is helpful. It's also nice to see how the different hardware is selling compared to our own personal feelings about the hardware. If the hardware is pushing a LOT of units then chances are it's a good product and is worth looking into more as well. It's not at all about a console war or anything like that.... at least not in this thread.
jayseven Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Got Crackdown (hello, 2007!) and just wondering what people's general thoughts/feelings on the game are? Currently I'm no good at getting around the city, and each time I get out of my nice, fast, practically-unbreakable car to chase a green orb I end up spotting another orb, and another, and another and-- oh, wait, where did I park my car again? The reason I'm so attached to it is because whenever I've raced in any other car, the car is either too slow, too fragile, or too hard to handle. So yeah. Roaming about a bit headless currently. Been playing it in 20 minute bursts. Never been great at sinking house into free-roaming games. Any tips for my focus... or anything?
Shorty Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 I remember playing the demo (free on the marketplace, yknow ) and finding it pretty dull When I asked what the trick was to enjoying it, was told the whole pull of the game was in its online co-op...which you might be a bit late for.
Dyson Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Actually I need to play through Crackdown as I only played about 4 hours of it. Perhaps this calls for a major xbl co-op sesh?
jayseven Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Dyson; MAKE IT SO! Shorty; SEND ME YOUR ADDRESS. Your birfdai/xmarse can be sorted with this game? :P
Shorty Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Actually a pretty awesome-mcbeans idea. But I have so many games to play and so few evenings to spare.... I'll agree if Dyson is seriously up for it?
Dyson Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 I'd love to. I'll happily move my 360 back upstairs and we can definitely do this, it's just sitting there not doing anything at the moment.
Funktion Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 I just ordered online a 250GB hard drive for my 360, since I ran out of space in my 20GB hard drive a long time ago. For those who upgraded their discs, I was wondering if you could give me a few tips on how to perform the switch without any problems. A few doubts I have: -my content is "fragmented" between my 20GB hard drive and a USB 16GB pen drive; I know the kit is supposed to copy the content from the old hard drive to the new one, but what about the content from the USB pen drive, will it copy it at the same time, will I have to copy it afterwards, ...? -I heard something about "transferring the licenses" from one hard drive to another; I have a few games that were removed from the service, will they cause me any problems? -what is the data that the transfer kit doesn't copy from one disc to another?
Llama Juice Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 I'm pretty certain the transfer kit will only transfer your HDD stuff over, you'll have to transfer your stuff from your pen drive separately I'd assume. The licenses stuff is fairly simple. You do all that stuff through the website, but the transfer kit SHOULD transfer licenses over I'd think... If your transfer kit doesn't transfer the licenses over then you just have to go on Xbox.com and go through their thing. It should only take a few minutes (when I was transferring licenses the website was being updated at the time... so it was kinda broken.) It's all fairly easy though.
Jimbob Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 You will have to do the USB stuff separatly, the Transfer kit only does HDD to HDD. It transfers some licenses over, but not all. You will have to go on the XBox site and transfer them over manually. Only trouble is, you can only transfer 30 over at a time. And only once per year, so choose wisely which 30 you want.
Funktion Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 I was reading some more info online, and I read on Microsoft's website that the licenses are attached to gamertag and console, and not hard drive. In my case, I'm still using the same console, the only thing I'm changing is the hard drive. Do I still need to transfer licenses?

I had to with some XBLA games and DLC, some of which i had been unable to play for a year or so because i changed HDD with the kit, and the licenses didn't transfer over.
Caris Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 Got a question for the more tech minded 360 owners out there. Does anyone know if the new dashboard is native 1080p? Or is it 720p upscaled like the previous one was?
Aimless Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 Far as I can tell it's still upscaled, although obviously native 1080p content — the odd game, movies — will display properly.

Unless you transfer the licenses over then they will work all the time.
