Even when the first rumours emerged about this service it always seemed a better comparison to makes was with  what Nintendo offer with their NES/SNES/N64 services rather than what MS were offering with Game Pass.

I 100% agree with this, and I still find it incredibly confusing that that's the case when this has been rumoured for so long - what, nearly 6 months now I think, with more and more details coming every time? - that comparisons are still being made to Game Pass.

Then again, as always, it's a vocal minority of people who aren't PlayStation fans (not calling out anyone on here, but definitely seen it elsewhere) who seem keen to make the comparison. Maybe one day PlayStation does get to the point where they have to do that, but for now, they have enough consoles out in the wild and sell a crazy amount of copies with first party releases, something Xbox was frankly struggling with and resulted in their transition to Game Pass and xCloud.

I'm really curious to see how the retro side of it is handled, because yeah, I think it's clear that - on here at least - that's what we're collectively most interested in. Do they have third parties onboard? If so, are we just expecting the usual suspects to support it and, for example for PS1, get a similar slate to the Classic? What's the rollout going to look like: is it going to be a drip feed, or a good chunk all at once?

So many questions, hopefully we see some answers next week! Personally I'm just really hoping we see some Konami representation in MGS titles and Suikoden, specifically V as it never made it's way to PSN on PS3 like I to IV did.

Also, calling it now, the PS1, PS2 and PS3 games will be made playable via cloud streaming; not actual native hardware emulation.

I don't think that would be too surprising, especially with what all of these reports have said.

At best I think PS1 and PS2 could be made playable through native emulation (I mean, I think they all could be, I just see them wanting to take the cheapest and easiest route, whatever that is), but I don't see them going that far with PS3. From what I've heard PS Now is much better on PS5, and that service already has a modest slate of PS3 titles available to stream.

More than anything else, I just want the abilty to play PS1, PS2, PSP and PS3 games natively on a modern console.

If Sony offered them up for sale like they used to back in the PS3 era? I'd buy a PS5 straight away.  Anything that would let me just retire the ol' PS3 that's still hooked up to my living room TV would earn my money more or less immediately.

I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much. A lot of PS1 and PS2 games are probably caught in licensing/publisher hell at this point and PS3 games will no doubt be streaming only, as you said. It's the same as Nintendo's subscription service. I've enjoyed playing the various games that have arrived on it so far but there are a stupid amount that have yet to show up and most of them that I want to play wont ever make an appearance. I imagine it will be the same here.

It is.
Have tried a few PS3 titles back when I had a trial run of PS Now and even with my below average internet speed the games were perfectly playable.
That being said, I will always prefer downloading games instead of streaming them :p

Didn’t they make PS Now games downloadable as well a few years ago?

This thread will be great next week. [emoji14]
I just wanna know if the current offering will remain at its current price point bob
And whether tier 2 will be worth it (depending on what games it'll offer and how expensive it'll be).
It's understandable because you are German and your English isn't so good, but we just say 'price'. The word 'point' is unnecessary and superfluous.

Rumour has it it'll start today.
Brace yourselves.

I'm not expecting an incredible launch of the new service. I'd settle for the potential of it becoming great over time, i.e. having more and more classic games available. But we'll see. It could also be a total disaster :D

Let's say Spartacus does deliver games from the PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP generations, what are the top 3 games from each of the consoles that you would want to see on the service? No limits on licensing or copyrights. Anything goes.

PS1- Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Hard Edge

PS2- Final Fantasy: Dirge of Cerebus, Maximo, Under the Skin.

PS3- Resistance 3, Puppeteer, Infamous.

PSP- Final Fantasy: Crisis Core, Daxter, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.

PS1 - Vagrant Story, Xenogears, Gunners Heaven (haven't played the first two)

PS2 - Dragon Quest VIII, Burnout 3: Takedown, Twisted Metal: Black (haven't played the latter)

PS3 - MGS4, Killzone 3, Resistance 3 (haven't played the last two)

PSP - no idea...I haven't dabbled with the PSP at all, yet

I honestly don't know what I'm expecting at this point from today (or whenever news drops) specifically, but I think they need to send a very clear message with their initial lineup of games and make it crystal clear what the plan is moving forwards. I think NSO for Nintendo has been fine, but the way they've updated us has been very haphazard from the outset; it's tough to be excited with a drip feed of games dropping pretty randomly and, before the N64 Expansion Pack was added, not knowing what to expect.

If third parties are included in any capacity, I think we need to see some games from them listed out of the gate (i.e. Metal Gear Solid), and say that you're working closely with third parties if that is the case (as in, call them out and show who we can expect games from). If there's going to be trophy support, come out and say it. If the plan is to drop decently sized catalogues for PS1, PS2, and PS3 all at once: say it. If the plan is to go a console at a time: say it. Clearly state the differences between tiers and the pricing structure (don't pull a Nintendo with the Expansion Pack and say "it's X amount annually" then not confirm the fact that there won't be a monthly option available - I get it from a business speak perspective, as you want to avoid any perceived negatives, but it raises more questions than it answers).

It's the really simple things like transparency about their plans which I feel PlayStation has been stumbling over a bit in the last year or two, so if and when we get an update on this - today, tomorrow, Friday, next week, next month, whenever it may be - they really need to nail the messaging.

I agree in that I think it'll be pretty middling to begin with, and my expectations are very low in that I want to go in just thinking it'll just be what's available on PS Now and maybe what was available on the PS Classic (probably barring Final Fantasy VII, seeing as that's available separately?) too.

Anyone got any ideas on how they might name the tiers? I imagine PS+ Silver/Gold/Platinum would be a pretty easy and clear way to distinguish, what with how it relates to trophies and the old Platinum line. Only drawback is it does sound a bit Xbox Live-ish...

Man, those are some good picks H-o-T!

For me I'd want a balance between what I'd personally want and what I'd want my friends to check out (for instance, none of them have ever played a Metal Gear Solid game), but I'll be selfish on focus on myself. I'll also do away with lack of localisations too :p

PS1 - Xenogears, Suikogaiden Vol. I (Suikoden graphic novel spin-off - by implication, I get Vol. II as well right, as a freebie? What do you mean, "no"? What kind of democracy is this?!), Legend of Dragoon

PS2 - Suikoden V, Dragon Quest VIII (in lieu of a modern HD release because Square Enix continue to be silly), Star Wars Battlefront II

PS3 - Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan! (the first samurai Yakuza game), 3D Dot Heroes, Final Fantasy XIII (and, by extension, the rest of the saga...right?! What do you mean "no" again?!)

PSP - Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (which one is the subtitle?!), Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, The Legend of Heroes: Trails on the Sky

Here we go, it's coming in June! Not sure if it deserves its own thread, so if someone wants to make it, feel free, because I'll be sorting the formatting on this post :)

Since launching PlayStation Plus in 2010, SIE has been at the forefront of innovation with game subscription services. We were thrilled to be the first console membership service that included a refreshed library of games through PlayStation Plus, and also launched the first console game streaming service with PlayStation Now.

Today, we are pleased to share with you official news about changes coming to our subscription services. This June, we’re bringing together PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now in an all-new PlayStation Plus subscription service that provides more choice to customers across three membership tiers globally.

Our focus is on providing high-quality, curated content with a diverse portfolio of games*. Below is an overview of the three membership tiers:

PlayStation Plus Essential
Benefits:

Provides the same benefits that PlayStation Plus members are getting today, such as:

 • Two monthly downloadable games
 • Exclusive discounts
 • Cloud storage for saved games
 • Online multiplayer access

There are no changes for existing PlayStation Plus members in this tier.

Price* for PlayStation Plus Essential remains the same as the current price for PlayStation Plus.

 • United States: $9.99 monthly / $24.99 quarterly / $59.99 yearly
 • Europe: €8.99 monthly / €24.99 quarterly / €59.99 yearly
 • United Kingdom: £6.99 monthly / £19.99 quarterly / £49.99 yearly

PlayStation Plus Extra

 • Europe: €13.99 monthly / €39.99 quarterly / €99.99 yearly
 • United Kingdom: £10.99 monthly / £31.99 quarterly / £83.99 yearly

 • Offers cloud streaming access for original PlayStation, PS2, PSP and PS4 games offered in the Extra and Premium tiers in markets** where PlayStation Now is currently available. Customers can stream games using PS4 and PS5 consoles, and PC.***

Time-limited game trials will also be offered in this tier, so customers can try select games before they buy.

Price*:

 • United States: $17.99 monthly / $49.99 quarterly / $119.99 yearly
 • Europe: €16.99 monthly / €49.99 quarterly / €119.99 yearly
 • United Kingdom: £13.49 monthly / £39.99 quarterly / £99.99 yearly
 • Japan: ¥1,550 – monthly / ¥4,300 – quarterly / ¥10,250 yearly

PlayStation Plus Deluxe (Select Markets) - For markets without cloud streaming, PlayStation Plus Deluxe will be offered at a lower price compared to Premium, and includes a catalog of beloved classic games from the original PlayStation, PS2 and PSP generations to download and play, along with time-limited game trials. Benefits from Essential and Extra tiers are also included. Local pricing will vary by market

The new Extra and Premium tiers represent a major evolution for PlayStation Plus. With these tiers, our key focus is to ensure that the hundreds of games we offer will include the best quality content that sets us apart. At launch, we plan to include titles such as Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal. We’re working closely with our imaginative developers from PlayStation Studios and third-party partners to include some of the best gaming experiences available with a library that will be regularly refreshed. More details to come on the games we’ll have on our new PlayStation Plus service.

When the new PlayStation Plus service launches, PlayStation Now will transition into the new PlayStation Plus offering and will no longer be available as a standalone service. PlayStation Now customers will migrate over to PlayStation Plus Premium with no increase to their current subscription fees at launch.

As this is a massive launch effort, we’re rolling out the new PlayStation Plus offering in a phased regional approach. In the June timeframe, we’ll begin with an initial launch in several markets in Asia, followed by North America, Europe and the rest of the world where PlayStation Plus is offered. We aim to have most PlayStation Network territories live with our new PlayStation Plus game subscription service by the end of the first half of 2022. We also plan to expand our cloud streaming benefit to additional markets, and will provide more details at a later date.

Building upon more than 25 years of expertise in gaming innovation, this change to our subscription services highlights our continued efforts to evolve our network services business to match our customer’s preferences. With the all-new PlayStation Plus, we’re focused on delivering a compelling game subscription service with curated content from our exclusive PlayStation Studios team and our third-party partners. The newly enhanced PlayStation Plus will enable our fans to discover and engage with more content than ever before, and deepen their connection with the PlayStation community through shared experiences.

We’re providing an early look at our new PlayStation Plus subscription service today, and we’ll plan to share more information with you as we get closer to launch. Stay tuned.

*Local pricing may vary by market. PlayStation Plus catalog titles may also vary by market and tier, and may change over time. PlayStation Plus is an ongoing subscription subject to a recurring subscription fee taken automatically until cancellation. Age restrictions apply.  Terms apply: play.st/psplus-usageterms

**Current markets where PlayStation Now is available: US, Canada, Japan, UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden.

And there it is!

Knew it'd be cloud streaming for PS1, PS2, PSP and PS3... Almost certainly continuing to use the current PS3 streaming racks.  Damn shame :(

Sigh... guess my PS3 stays hooked up.  Time to buy some replacement controller batteries again I suppose...

PS3 streaming was expected, but still sad.

Other than that: Sounds good. I'll be able to test PlayStation Plus Premium for a few months since I still have a PS Now sub until October this year.
There will surely be deals to reduce the annual sub a few quid just as it's been for years now. Might actually be a good idea to look out for some cheap PS Now deals :D

Now I just need the entire list of games available in each tier.

It's not just PS3, ALL of the classic games (PS1, PS2, PSP and PS3) are done via cloud streaming.

What are the chances that they'll sell the PS1, PS2 and PSP games separately as well? I wouldn't mind getting a couple of them, not going to fork out £100 subscription for them though.

There's an option for both cloud streaming and downloading for PS1, PS2, and PSP.

Oh shit!!! I missed that!!

Ok, you now officially have my interest Sony! DON'T fuck this up like you did on PS4!!

Actually, come to think of it... They don't list which console that the classic games will be available for... Could this also be made available for PS4 as well as PS5? If that's the case, I won't need to buy a new console! :D
