Wii
No they won't you have to take them out to put it on the Gamepad Makes sense and this way they might get people to double dip on a particular model. One for collecting and one for use.
V. Amoleo
Some of the Skylanders you can get to scan without taking them out of the packaging. But if you're going to use them, why not just take them out of the packaging?
Guy
Pre-ordered Link, Samus, Pikachu and Villager. I'll decide when/if I want to expand my collection when we know more about upcoming releases and functionality. I'd like to at least get all the Smash cast if possible. Pestneb
At this stage they are still Christmas present suggestions. I got an email from Nintendo letting me know I could preorder amiibo. I checked it out, hoping for some sort of information but nope. Personally I'm not really interested by the line up they've got so far, which is a shame. Also, worryingly: "The first set of figures is for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. " http://store.nintendo.co.uk/amiibo-interactive-figures.list it's followed later by : "In addition to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, you'll be able to use amiibo in a number of other games -" But I'm beginning to think perhaps that is the Amiibo concept, rather than the individual figurines. I hope I am wrong, but that first sentence has gotten me a little worried. On the other hand, D/L pack 1 for MK8 has link, so I wonder if it will let link Amiibo race alongside us, much like in smash... Essentially I'm thinking Amiibo are a way of allowing a permanent virtual friend to play with you offline, countering a)low market penetration (the market allows for about 1 in 3 people owning a console in the UK, Wii U currently is owned by around 1 in 200 vs about 1 in 7 for the Wii) b) growing up - as an adult I've noticed my friends are far less available to come round (and I'm less available to have them come round) to play video games. I'm also wondering about generations. Will Amiibo work forever, or next gen, will amiibo 2 be released, slowly making our unique amiibo buddies redundant... or will Amiibo encourage that new IP people have been asking for? Rummy
There's an ignore button for a reason guys... When it works There's probably extra security involved in NFC credit card. While you can link your phone to a payment account and use the NFC to pay for something in a shop, you can't use a contactless card to pay for something on your phone. I imagine that's more due to how cards have generally worked in shops - I could be mistaken but I'm assuming it's all still based on the old system of sending all the card details to the bank for authorisation. 10 years ago when I worked in a shop and the card machines failed, we'd ring a number and essentially touchtone dial all the details then get the 'auth id' for the transaction - all these details are on your receipts still. I believe a card swipe+till essentially automated that, and chip+pin(amusingly introduced for increased security) and contact-less(arguably not as secure!) still use the same system. /randomfactsthatmightbefiction Why not £9.99?! That's such a perfect amount!! @Wii please get over it, they're here, a lot of us are excited by them, nintendo as a business NEED them (ultimately the main point), no we don't need them, but we didn't need the wheel to play mario kart but we liked it, or the gun shells, we don't NEED a bigger screen on our phones or 3DS's but a lot of people WANT it!! You don't, don't buy. But I really hope Nintendo add in some awesome Amiibo features to make it more annoying for you! Couldn't agree more! I think £9.99 would get more sales too, just being that sort of 'just a tenner' price. Personally I'm not too fussed about amiibo, I might dip in just to see, but on the whole I do see it as an optional gimmick that I'm not particularly bothered about. I don't think it's being made for me, and I'm hoping it won't be used to unlock any non-optional content or anything that gives an advantage - if the plan sticks like that then I think it's going to do very well amongst some of the younger generation. I'd have loved little Ninty figurines and stuff back when I was younger though there was nowhere to get them really. £10 for a figurine AND game content? Tempting! Back then at least anyway, but now I'm not fussed. Though having said that I do still think having a mario or link sitting near the TV is a little tempting and Amiibo is a good excuse for it... Murr
Annoyingly I think I'll end up double dipping on them, as I want to use them obviously, but I like to try to keep my Nintendo goodies unopened where possible (Zelda Windwaker HD Collectors still sealed, bought a 2nd copy to play, I do dislike myself sometimes)
Ronnie
I'll buy a set unopened, and then another 6 to use I think. With this and those lovely 3DS faceplates my wallet is going to be crying for months.
Pestneb
Have they started advertising over here? Also...looking at this picture.. Villager and Pikachu have clear smash bros emblems on the base... it may just be the photo, but I can't see it on Yoshi's base... (nor Kirby's obviously). Just wondering, if that is the case in the final product, why, could it indicate anything in particular? Edited October 5, 2014 by Pestneb
Ronnie
They all have Smash Bros logos on the bases, they've been there since the E3 unveiling. These are the "Smash Bros" amiibo range, that's why Mario is in a fighting stance. There'll be other collections, some with the same characters used again. dazzybee
I've ordered all 12, but I'm thinking of bottling it... I'm very concerned about each game having their own amigos, they sold it on one amiibo working across lots of games, now these amiibo have special smash functionality... will mario kart have special functionality you need mario kart ones for?! I'm really not liking the sound of anything they;re doing with these things. Either have one big game that uses them specifically, or have loads of amiibo's that work across everything, don't do some bastardised in-between!! I hate the smash functionality for amiibo, I'm buying them on the promise of it being used in other games (and they look awesome) Really wish Nintendo would tell us what the hell is going on with all this!! Ronnie
The "Smash Bros" part of these amiibo are just cosmetic, it's only in the design and they have no unique functionality in Smash. They'll work with any future game.

I hate the smash functionality for amiibo, I'm buying them on the promise of it being used in other games (and they look awesome) Really wish Nintendo would tell us what the hell is going on with all this!! I've preordered one on amazon, because I like it as a figurine. There are 5 more I like.. but I'm not getting them until we know more about the functionality, and only if I like that functionality. The smash bros use actually intrigues me. It will be a unique cpu that develops. If the AI is well designed then amiibos, imo, could become as compelling to play against as a human online opponent. It could even just make things more compelling in a placebo way - you see the figurine and know that you are competing against it, it makes the CPU less of an abstract entity and more of a concrete real tangible one. Of course this only works for me if each individual figurine works across a range of games. I don't mind if they release specialised amiibo, so long as they WILL work on other games. So perhaps the smash amiibos will be more effective smash bros players than they are at racing in mk8. but if they ONLY function in smash, and won't be able to function with MK8... I will only get the one! At the moment I can read two possibilities in what has been announced. 1) Amiibos (as a range) will be released with game specific figurines. So amiibos will work across several games, but an individual figurine works on only the game it was designed for. 2)Each Amiibo figurine will function with every amiibo enabled game. The second possibility makes more sense to me than the first, it goes some way to justifying the price at least! I imagine we will have a very good idea which of the two is closest to the truth prior to launch. I'm sure they said some of the memory was specifically for Smash bros, so what's to say some of the memory in the mario kart ones are only for smash? And does that mean the memory in non smash bros ones don't work in smash like this?!? It could be like a memory card, using the GC as an example, 59 blocks, and each game takes up a set amount of memory. So perhaps after using it for an amount of games you get a pokemon like prompt "Pikachu wants to learn how to play Mario kart 9, but it already knows how to play 4 games."... Or they will make sets of amiibo, compatible with a certain group of games that won't exceed it's memory capacity, then releases series 2 amiibo.... Cube
Now that Smash 3DS is out, there will hopefully be a Nintendo Direct covering Smash Wii U and Amiibo usage in MK8, MP10, Captain Toad and Yoshi's Wollu World.
Josh64
Yeah, there has to be a direct soon because these things still seem so pointless even after reading the smash usage. I mean, is it just another CPU that you somehow train up? I don't get it at all. A direct HAS to happen in a few weeks, we're already in October! The things are little over a month away and we still know barely anything and have seen no advertising. Then again, they seemed to take that stance with Wii U in general so why would Amiibo's be treated any differently? :p

It's been two months since the last one and they always happen once bi-monthly. And if Smash is still coming out this year, this'll be when they announce the release date - or else it's not coming out till next year.
Wii
Outside of a couple of game specific Directs(Hyrule Warriors and Bayonetta 2) I don't think we've had or heard a thing about Wii U since E3. I could be wrong but I don't remember anything. I think there'll be a Smash Direct and an Amiibo Direct. We really are spoilt rotten.

You're right, the last major Direct was focused all around the New3DS and the last Direct type video was the E3 Digital Event. That being said, we did get that Treehouse Live session which went over some upcoming Wii U games as well. I do think that this month's Direct will focus on Wii U in general though. Plenty of scope for new trailers of known games and announcements of release dates for Wii U games, as well as the long awaited N64 VC - meanwhile they've not got much to focus on with 3DS in the next few months (and they're not gonna talk about the New3DS in US/EU until next year anyway). Ronnie
Decent vid that does a good job of explaining the benefit in Smash Bros. But what's with the fugly support column on the Link and DK amiibo? Looks different to the pre-release models??
Guy
Wow. They sure stealthed those awful support stands in at the last minute, didn't they. I've seen quite a few production shots of Amiibo with the support plastic in place. I think those neat transparent rods are long gone. I understand the necessity for durability, but why couldn't they have made the Link one transparent or designed these in a way that they don't require them? My quality expectations for these have been dipping each time they're shown further along in development. Wanna know the saddest thing though? I'm still buying them all like a chump. dazzybee
Shit just noticed. When you said support column I was just thinking yeah they've been there for ages. But... what have the done. dazzybee
I think I'm having a change of mind about this in Smash Bros. The more I watch it, the more I'm liking the idea a little more than I did, quite like the idea of tag teams, me and my amigo vs my mate and theirs; that's kind of fun I guess. We'll see!!
