So it turns out the Dragon Quest VIII port has localised texts already in the apk file so this means there's a good chance we're going to be getting at least VIII over here. I don't think DQ1 requires much translation.

VIII doesn't run too bad on my Nexus 4, although there's still the occasional slow down.

Man, the idea/what I've seen of playing VIII on tablet looks so dreadful. I wouldn't want to sully my memory of this game playing it in such a crappy way. :/

It's pretty weird without the voice acting. The limited view and controls are pretty bad.

But I'm interested in seeing if we get the games, especially since Europe still doesn't have an official release of I-III & VII. I would have prefered a console release in some form of course.

The DQI port is pretty good, it's also probably the best suited as a mobile game as well.

Next year is the 25th anniversary of the series in America so maybe we'll see VII on 3DS and X finally get released.

This ought to be of some relief to DQ fans here...

http://www.siliconera.com/2013/12/26/dragon-quest-xi-wont-smartphones-says-dragon-quest-creator/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+siliconera%2FMkOc+%28Siliconera%29

During the interview, Andou says that without a doubt, we can expect a new Dragon Quest title in the near future. With this in mind, he mentions that there must be fans who’d like to be able to play the next Dragon Quest game on both consoles and smartphones; however, he acknowledges that the devices are quite different in terms of development, so it must also be different to make games for them.

He then asks about the possibility of seeing the next installment of the main numbered Dragon Quest series on mobile devices.

“I don’t think that it’s as easy as it sounds,” says Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii. “At the current stage, there are no talks about making Dragon Quest XI for smartphones. I believe that there’s still plenty left to overcome before we release a proper sequel for smartphones.”

“That’s quite the bold statement,” responds Andou. “On the other hand, my main battlefield lies within making games for smartphones, so a part of me tells myself ‘smartphones are game consoles, too’ while I work. However, going back to what you just said, I clearly understand what you mean.”

“Smartphones are smartphones, and they’re not game consoles,” states Horii in response to Andou. “I don’t think they’ll be replacing game consoles, but rather, I believe it’s a matter of offering something to those who only have smartphones.”

Horii, forever the voice of reason :)

Horii is a smart man.

I'm starting to believe the earlier smartphone comments were just about the I-VIII ports rather than the series as a whole in the future.

Game Features

– Simple, Accessible Controls

The control system has been streamlined to work perfectly with modern touch interfaces.

The position of the directional pad can be adjusted freely, enabling players to switch between one-handed and two-handed play with a tap of the screen.

The combat system has also been reworked, allowing for one-tap battles as well as more complex play.

– The Tension System

During battle, you can select 'Psyche Up' to give your next attack some extra oomph!

The more you psyche a character up, the higher their tension will rise, until they finally reach an insane state known as super-high tension!

– Skill Points

Skill points are earned when your characters level up, and can be assigned to various skills in order to learn new spells and abilities.

This system allows you to perfectly tailor your team to your liking.

– Monster Teams

Certain monsters found in the field can be scouted for your monster team – if you're tough enough to beat them, that is!

Once assembled, your crack squad can take part in the fiercely contested tournaments held at the monster arena, and can even come to your aid in battle!

No way is this remotely playable? :wtf: Touchscreen is for swiping and tapping on, not for controlling a virtual joystick. *shudders*

DQIV coming later today/tomorrow. Should be more playable than VIII.

It has party chat!

Ooooh, that woukd be pretty tempting if I didn't own the DS version, we never got the party chat in English!

Not the best DQ by a long shot, but definitelly worth it and it should run pretty well on mobiles. Good to see Square working to improve the experience by making it more complete than the original.

Anyone remember those trademarks from a while back?

Luminaries of the Legendary Line is DQII and will be out later tonight.

Which means Seeds of Salvation is DQIII.

Wow, cheers for keeping this all up to date Ike! I had no idea that the first two of the original trilogy had been published in English, I'll get around to them soon as the original trilogy are the only titles I am yet to play!

I've been playing Dragon Quest II lately, and I'm curious: is it any easier to find the World Map this time around? That's one of my main gripes with the game so far.

DQIII actually looks pretty good, doesn't have the odd squashed looked. Getting some minor SFX glitches on my Nexus 7 though.
