General Gaming Sales/Charts Discussion

If Nintendo hadn't have sacrificed it, and went for power, they'd be in the same situation

You dont know this for sure and if you really believe this then going forward all we should expect is underpowered consoles which try to make up its inadequate services with gimmick controllers. I refuse to believe this is the best Nintendo can do and dont think there is anything to suggest Nintendo would be in the same position if they produced a better console. To say they would be in the same position is pure speculating and no more than that.

Yeah, it isn't just power (although that is a major factor). It's Nintendo's general inability to modernise and grasp what customers really want. That feeling reverberates; devs have no confidence, consumers have no confidence, console fails.

Correct. Releasing a poweful console which lacks the features and services people have come to expect isnt what people are asking for yet whenever somebody counters the 'power argument' they seem to think thats what we want when thats not the case at all.

It isn't just the Gamepad though really - I mean as far as I know it's not actively putting people off, it's just not roping them in. So why doesn't anyone want it? The things they sacrificed for the Gamepad, I'd imagine. Sadly it's just not a rectifiable situation - they took a big gamble putting their eggs in this basket, and it hasn't paid off.

Because people started to use tablets years ago and do not require a games console controller which tries to immitate a tablet while at the same time being worse than those tablets. If the gamepad was ditched and replaced with a pro controller I dont think the console would be any less recieved as people do not care about the Gamepad. A complete waste of time and money!!

If you look at how Nintendo have operated historically where consoles were always sold at profit its amazing that the wii u got given the greenlight. As soon as the costs to manufacture the gamepads was realised and then the price the console would have to sell for to make money the idea should of been shot down.

Not to mention those that get the system and don't feel as wow'd as they could be - also less likely to adopt next gen. That's what I mean with 360 and PS3, they've laid a nice foundation to boost the PS4 and XBone whereas due to Wii's nature and consumer, it hasn't as much. Most of the people I know who've gotten Wii Us are more long-term/core gamers, and there's still a number of people I'd expect to see with one without. Hell, I think this was even the first Nintendo home console I haven't bothered with on launch - so what's that saying for it?

EDIT: Had wanted to do this earlier but work etc. Popped by GameFAQs for the poll of the day and noticed they'd recently done a series of 'Got <console>?'. No idea the demographics of the sorts of folks who go by and vote etc but decided to screen and collate them maybe for a bit of discussion here. Bonus poll about what folks got for xmas :p (some polls have dates below where they've been done before, if anyone cares to go see how it's changed over time)

Not surprised to see the PS4 up there as a Christmas present. No XBone on their Christmas poll though?

A lot of people I know we're bought a PS4 as the 'cool' present this year.

My Facebook feed was rammed with pics of kid's and adults presents, and a lot of them had PS4’s. I set my GF's dad's PS4 up on Christmas Day and he wanted to play online on FIFA. Told them there was a charge - he was raging lol.

In comparison, interesting to see the Wii U figure. Still think Nintendo royally ballsed Christmas up by not having Mario Kart ready for market.

That's a pretty damming poll for the X1 considering GameFAQs' userbase is largely American. Also pretty tragic for Nintendo considering Nintendo games and characters often top their 'best ever' polls. People there hold Nintendo games and characters close to their hearts, so it's really telling that people just don't want the Wii U as a console.

Tip: You can also view the results country by country. Click the big blue button. For some countries, you can even view the results county by county, although some of them makes it obvious that's not many voted. Click on the UK for example.

I don't why the Xbone was not in the poll, but it was only released in 12 countries in 2013. I'm not sure if there's even a release date for the rest of the world.

Hmm, didn't clock that. I'd presume someone accidentally put Xbox360 in it instead of XBone, which is a bit of a shame for the comparison. It's nice to see that a good chunk of some people apparently have Wii U interest - Nintendo need to get that turned into sales, though!

Nice next gen software sales.

Fifa 14 PS4 being #1 is very impressive. Nice Forza 5 bump which suggests the XB1 forza bundle had some good sales last week.

Plenty 360 high in the list. Looks like there are plenty 360 owners ready to wait before going to Next gen

3DS wont have any games in the top 40 soon and Wii U & Vita still dead. Retailers practically giving the Vita away is doing nothing.

Not sure the poll really means much when MS say XB1 has sold 3 mil consoles

http://news.xbox.com/2014/01/xbox-one-january-thank-you

Together, we ushered in a new era of games and entertainment with Xbox One. Over 3 million Xbox One consoles were sold to consumers in 13 countries before the end of 2013. It’s been incredible to see Xbox One selling at a record-setting pace for Xbox, and we were honored to see Xbox One become the fastest-selling console in the U.S. during our launch month in November. Since our launch, demand for Xbox One has been strong, selling out throughout the holidays at most retailers worldwide. We are continuing to work hard to deliver additional consoles to retailers as fast as possible.

Now the PS4 may of sold more but regardless 3mil is an impressive number.

Nintendo sold 3 million Wii Us in the same time period in 2012 and people were calling it a failure at that point.

Just saying :P

Though that is good for Microsoft. I was expecting it to flounder.

3 Wii U titles in the Japanese top 10 chart, that must be a first. NSMBU is nearing the 1 million milestone. Sales are finally looking respectable in Japan. I hope it lasts and that we get some 3rd party support off the back of the upturn.

LM2 nearing 1 mil is mightly impressive as is P&D getting there so quickly.

Will be interesting to see where the Wii U settles at after the holiday season.

01/15

Dr. Luigi & Saikin Bokumetsu

01/22

Trine 2: Mittsu no Chikara to Fukashigi no Mori

02/01

Wii Fit U (Balance Board and Fit Meter Set)

02/05

Monster Hunter Frontier G (Memorial Package)

02/06

Puyo Puyo Tetris

02/13

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Just dont think there are enough titles coming to keep hardware sales from going back down to the pre holiday 10k a week numbers.

Did you know about this?!

I'm looking at all the modes right now and I'm in awe. The one thing that's going to put me off though is the high price they slap on puzzle games in Japan

Nintendo's focus on making a console for Japan seems to be doing okay for them at this point. I mean, they have no competition but at least people are kind of interested.

Also, Aliens: Colonial Marines sold better than Super Mario 3D World?! What the hell.

It was most likely avaliable for £5 @ retailers last week. Mario 3D dropped quickly but its not that surprising. The Wii U install base in the UK is not even 200k and I dread to think what the actual active install base is considering Wii U games sell crazy low amounts in the UK.

they really do. I think I've only paid full price for 3 or 4 out of the 17 games I own. I'm loving the Wii U doom and gloom, I've got console, 2 pro controllers, Wiimote+, tons of games and all for the cost of an Xbox 1 + Live... suckers!

I would hardly call people who bought the One or PS4 suckers if they want and enjoy the product. They may not find the Wii U appealing ( given the sales this seems to be the case for a lot of people ) so buying a product with games that they do want to play and enjoy is a no brainer.
