http://www.gameblog.fr/news/43423-france-mario-kart-8-booste-la-wii-u-nous-avons-les-chiffres

6 times as many sales in the UK, 10 times as many in France... so little effect in Japan, but it seems to have had an effect in Europe, certainly in France. Albeit still only 20k sales. But that's not far off the Wii U's regular weekly worldwide sales, and 20k is from 1 country - so surely a positive.

UK sold about half that amount again... add Japan at 20k, that's at least 50k sold in 3 countries

Took the PS4 15 weeks to reach a level it took the PS3 two years to get to, and the PS3 didn't start out well.

Japan is dying, with smartphones taking over. It's quite sad.

The times they are a-changing. It's not inherently sad.

US software & hardware figures for the week ending 31/5 just popped up over here. The top five was the four versions of Watch Dogs with Mario Kart splitting them in 3rd.

Visible boost on hardware sales, as expected.

PS4 92,603 (+71%) 3,455,879

WiiU 78,247 (+611%) 2,535,675

XOne 30,836 (+27%) 2,867,177

Hell of a tally for a new IP.

Interesting, given the IP discussion that went on in the Wii U thread! I'm thinking of making a thread down here around new IP at some point, actually.

Have we actually gotten any hard UK figures on those sales that were 666%?

Aye, also Watch Dogs apparently isn't supposed to be breathtaking and it did so well. It's certainly food for thought for those saying new IP isn't exactly priority.

I'd look forward to that thread. :)

It looks like just under 11k Mario kart Wii U bundles sold in the UK, plus an additional 3k or so non mario kart Wii U consoles sold.

PS4 almost doubled it's sales (probably thanks to watchdogs), so Wii U still came second.

In terms of those figures being hard, I don't think so, not yet.

Sony back on top after eight years.

Sony (Berlin: SON1.BE - news) have topped worldwide sales of video game consoles for the first time in eight years, a newspaper reported on Saturday (Shenzhen: 002291.SZ - news) , pipping struggling rival Nintendo and signalling the Playstation manufacturer's comeback.

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) sold 18.7 million PlayStation 4 (PS4) systems and other game consoles for the fiscal year to March, the Nikkei business daily said, to Nintendo's 16.31 million units.

The release of the PS4 in the United States and other markets in November propelled Sony's fortunes after a disappointing response to the console's predecessor, the PS3.

Almost seven million PS4's were sold, but Sony's overall sales of hardware, including the portable PlayStation Vita, still fell some 20 percent for the fiscal year, the report said.

Nintendo's console sales slid 31 percent as the portable 3DS system failed to entice gamers while the new Wii U also fared poorly, it added.

Sony last topped the console sales list in March 2006 but sales of the PS3 came in below expectations and struggled against's Wii and DS series.

Nikkei said Sony was expected to stay at number one for the rest of the year as Nintendo has few noteworthy releases planned.

Microsoft (Berlin: MSF.BE - news) 's sales rose 16 percent to 11.6 million thanks to the rollout of the popular Xbox One towards the end of 2013, the report added.

That's a bit of a depressing article, from Sony's and Nintendo's point of view, if I read it correctly.

Sony's overall sales of hardware... still fell some 20 percent for the fiscal year

The only one of the big three that apparently should be pleased by that report is microsoft, with a small increase in hardware sales.

As the self appointed chairman of Club Sony, with totally legit connections to the industry, I can reveal that their exact words were "Fucking splendid" before grabbing some whips and heading off to get Nintendo employees to build them a pyramid or something.

I doubt Sony will find it too depressing, given they are back on top. :P

Really?

Nintendo have failed more than Sony, but a 20% drop is still not a good thing, unless such sales drops are an expected consequence to manufacturing new hardware?

But yes, I suppose at the very least Sony have a silver lining to their cloud.

Sounds more like a race of which one is the #1 loser.

Their Vita isn't doing well and the PS3 is now last gen so that probably goes some way to explain the drop in hardware sales. Handhelds are pretty fucked now that smartphones and tablets are here though.

Success is usually judged by looking at the home console as opposed to handhelds and the PS4 is making Sony appear really good right now.

For me the PS3 sales in the US have been below par for ages. The 360 killed them in the US and unlike with the PS2 which sold very healthy after the PS3 launched this wont happen this time around.

While smartphones and tablets have eaten a huge chunk of the handheld market you cant just give Sony a pass on that. Just as Nintendo get called out when the 3DS under-performs Sony deserve the same with the Vita.

Surely a price cut on the PS3 and 360 hardware should be on the cards at their press conferences this coming week?

But what has changed from the year before for the 20% drop? Literally all I can think of is the failed Vita and the decline of last gen consoles. Vita is their fault for not supporting it enough, but also due to app gaming. The last gen decline is just bound to happen, really. Even with top exclusives like The Last of Us, they don't do as well in the US. And now they are beating the X1 with their new console, but still we see a 20% drop. I can't explain it, other than to say the 360 was too strong in USA on account of people wanting to stick to their machine to play with their existing friends who also have 360s.

I'm not so sure. They both should of been cut by now. The PS3 especially but not sure the margins allow them to do so.

I dont think anyone is trying to deny Sony Playstation is on the up and the PS4 will only continue to grow at the expense of the competition.

Well the awful launch of the PS3 allowed MS to take the US and they couldn't really recover but made sure they rectified such a disaster with the PS4
