Daft Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 But like, you sound dejected not the usual kind of 'this game sucks'.
drahkon Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 I had high hopes for this game and was really looking forward to it. I guess I'm just very disappointed it turned to be so FUCKING BORING. :p
flameboy Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 Hmm after playing Ducktales and Cloudberry Kingdom I'm really into 2D platformers gonna have to try the demo NOW!
Retro_Link Posted September 2, 2013 Author Posted September 2, 2013 Surprisingly I've just seen this is selling for around £25 online!
Daft Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Yeah, it's a budget title. I loved the demo. Dunno what you're on about @drahkon. I thought it was mesmerising. I loved the sound of the audience (makes me want to get a surround sound set-up). Really added to the whole feel. I was playing it in co-op with @Ashley
Retro_Link Posted September 2, 2013 Author Posted September 2, 2013 What the co-op @Daft? First I'm hearing about it.
Daft Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Player one plays as Kutaro and player two plays as his floating cat friend. He interacts with the level, collects moon gems and is needed to solve puzzles. I only played as Kutaro. I pre-ordered this from ShopTo.

I was playing it in co-op with @Ashley Forgot to say at the time, but it felt like it would be brilliant in 3D. And by that I mean if it was done by musion or something. The way levels stacked up and you delved in, just felt so gooooooooood. Yeah the second player had an easier role (I felt at least). A companion role essentially. I guess it was helpful in that I could go around collecting the moon bits in hard to reach/dangerous places as nothing can defeat the ghost spider cat thing!
Retro_Link Posted September 6, 2013 Author Posted September 6, 2013 Reviews coming in... 8.5 from IGN http://uk.ign.com/articles/2013/09/06/puppeteer-review 8.7 from Gametrailers http://www.gametrailers.com/reviews/epwz4y/puppeteer-review
Ashley Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Interesting interview with the director Gavin Moore : http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/199841/puppeteer_a_macabre_fairy_tale_.php As well as discussing Puppeteer, they discuss various Sony studios, the state of the market etc.
ThePigMarcher Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 Managed to put a couple of hours into this today and whilst I wasn't convinced at first (despite really enjoying the demo) it's really beginning to win me over (only just started Act 3 of 7). Really solid presentation, completely off the wall in places and now that a couple of extra gameplay elements have been introduced things are really picking up. It's obviously not going to be the most challenging game ever, judging by how many extra lives I seem to be stocking up but at least it'll give me a break from those awful Living Dead Party levels in Rayman Legends . A little bit awkward to get to some of those secrets as a solo player due to the amount of other stuff going on, especially when the screen can get a little bit 'busy' but it will give it a little more replay value as there appears to be a fair amount to unlock, if you're so inclined.
Hero-of-Time Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 (edited) I took a break from Kingdom Hearts and played an hour or so on this yesterday. One of my nephews was around so we played in co-op, which works really well. He was nabbing all the pickups and hitting all the breakable stuff while I was just making my way through the level. Graphically its absolutely gorgeous! All of the characters have their own distinctive look and charm about them, even the enemies. The voice over work is really well done as well. Even the crowd reactions add something to the game. When they laugh or gasp at certain things it really is like you are sitting watching some kind of play. I've only finished the first act but there is an insane amount of replay value for each stage. As Piggy said, there are a bunch of collectables, ranging from different heads to finding missing kids. Although it is a little easy it's still fun to play. When it looks and sounds this good and unique then it doesn't matter how easy it is. It may not be a commercial hit but once again I have to commend Sony for releasing another new IP so late in the PS3s life. The year of the PS3 continues. Edited September 13, 2013 by Hero-of-Time
Dcubed Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 (edited) So I got it! (Beaten Act 1 and am in the middle of Act 2) And so far... It's ppppprrrrfectly wonderful! For those who were burnt by the promises of Gravity Rush and how it ended up being a one-trick-pony/glorified tech demo and were worried that Puppeteer might also fall into the same trap where it has great ideas that go nowhere... Don't be! The very first Act already introduces more new gameplay concepts than Gravity Rush did in the entire game! It's fun, it's funny, it's extremely inventive, it feels great to play (they totally nailed the jumping and cutting physics!) and the presentation is "AHHSTOUNDING"! (To @Daft Yeah, this makes fantastic use of surround sound; it really makes you feel part of the audience! - Just wish I had a 3DTV... I can tell that they really made great use of the S3D effect and I can imagine what it would look like, just wish I could see it!) It's not really that challenging, but it's not a walk in the park either. It's comfortable for most people but will still keep you on your toes Don't compare it to Mario or DK or any of Nintendo's other platformers, cause if you go in with that mindset, you'll be disappointed. It's not meant to be a "pure" platformer, but rather something different; not necessarily a "light" platformer, but there's a bigger emphasis on finding secrets and hidden things in the background than in those games (the closest example that comes to mind is actually probably Kirby's Epic Yarn - like a sort of dark and twisted KEY, with an actual smidge of difficulty outside of medal hunting!) I can tell that this'll end up being one of the best games Sony has ever produced. A shame that it'll only be remembered as a hidden gem, cause it deserves better. It's a really solid game, with a lot of love and care put into it (and some solid gameplay by people who clearly knew what they were doing!) For the silly price it's going for, you'd be mad to miss out. It's a better platformer than Rayman Legends is! Also, as a side note, I REALLY appreciate the fact that there are basically no loading times throughout the game (and without any install either!). It's such a rarity to see that kind of experience outside of Nintendo games and consoles (and really impressive when you consider how amazing the game looks!). Kudos Sony! Really goes a long way towards making the experience more enjoyable Edited September 13, 2013 by Dcubed
drahkon Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 It's a better platformer than Rayman Legends is! I...I...wh..wha...
ThePigMarcher Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 I...I...wh..wha... Having played a little more of it over the last day or so I would be inclined to agree with Dcubed. I'm mid-way through Act 5 so still have a little way to go and I'll reserve final judgement until I have beaten both games but I can easily see this topping Legends. That not to say Rayman is a bad game, far from it but there is just so much charm and inventiveness in Puppeteer it will prove hard to top.
Cube Posted March 16, 2021 Posted March 16, 2021 It turns out I completely forgot this game existed (even though I have posts in this thread). Decided to try it because it looked vaguely interesting while browsing through PS Now games. I'm actually very surprised about the game, love it so far. Reminds me a lot of Yoshi's Woolly World, but with an extremely fun setting. Love the puppet theatre crossed with British pantomime, lots of funny moments and even Thunderbirds references (I was definitely expecting that). Gameplay is simple but they add lots of new things throughout to keep things interesting. On chapter 5 so far. I think it's a massive shame that this was never released on PS4, as it definitely deserves a bigger audience than it got.
