DS Game on 3DS & 3DS XL

French video where they discuss the 3DS, and show a side-by-side play of MK7 on both the 3DS & the XL. It looked really good on the XL.

I thought 3DS game saves had a link to the console - ie. you could not play game saves on another 3DS. I might be wrong on that count, I hope for your sake I am.

Yeah I could play Kid Icarus Upriseing on my mums 3DS and it's still there on the game card but with Mario Kart 7 it might be different I haven't tried it yet

Quick question regarding SD cards...

I know that the SD cards that come with 3DS console are pre-formatted but I was thinking about forgetting the 4GB card that comes with the 3DS XL and just using an 8GB SDHC card that I purchased new a while ago.

My question is this... do I need to format it on a PC before use or will it automatically become formatted for use with the console by simply inserting it into the SD card slot?

I've upgraded my SD card twice now, 8GB then 32GB not so long ago, I don't remember if I formatted or not, but it's working fine.

The 3DS doesn't automatically format/reformat an SD card. According to the Nintendo.com website there are 2 ways to format an SD card:

"SD cards can be reformatted either with a computer that has an SD card reader or directly from the menu of most digital cameras."

You can find some more info here:

http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/3ds/en_na/ht_settings.jsp

Just to be on the safe side format your SD card.

Actually it does. I put on my Mario Kart and a message popped up saying that the data was corrupted. I had to format everything and now i have lost all my data and will be selling the game as a result.. bah!!!

The charger is only £8, how can the stand be worth £12?

Still ordered one because I like the stand but £20?

I popped into the HMV in Cardiff to check out any deals and noticed that they had that 3DSXL poster. It was tempting to wait for a staff member to walk nearby and point out the mistake to them, but I refrained in the end. :p

What's even funnier is that they had the XL literally a few feet away on display. Clearly no second slidepad on there. I did find that the XL looked too big, particularly the screens. It just feels a bit strange, and its a bit too bulky for my liking.

I did also look at the red 3DS and fell in love with it instantly. It all pretty much hangs on Monster Hunter 4 and whether that turns out to be great or not.

Apparently GAME's trade in offer is that you buy the 3DS XL and you can later bring your regular 3DS back after doing the transfer and receive a refund of £100 from the 3DS XL price. This is apparently within a two week window from purchase.

That's a pretty good deal. Though are assume they're also selling it for £200?

I'm gonna hold out for new colours.

That does sound a good deal indeed. I know some people who would do that trade.

Yeah, they said that in brick & mortar stores, the price will be £200

And we wonder why they collapsed

So after I get my 3DS XL and transfer everything over to it, am I still going to get assigned a new friend code or will it let me keep my existing one?

It's not a deal-breaker, I'm just curious.

3DSxl Iwata Laughs is out now :D

http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/3ds/xl/0/0

main1.jpg

Lots of lovely Industrial Design geeky goodness :yay:

Miyatake When you open the Nintendo 3DS, for the surface material of the upper side, we're using a new resin called nylon GF55.

Iwata GF stands for glass fiber, right?

Murakami Yes. It's a plastic reinforced with fine glass fiber.

Iwata So does the name GF55 mean that it's 55% glass fiber?

Miyatake You got it. Usually, you bring out the color of the resin and then paint on it to draw out nice colors, but with GF resin, the original coloring doesn't come out well.

Iwata With 55% glass fiber, don't machining and decoration also get difficult?

Miyatake Yes, they do. So the normal processes just don't work! (laughs) You spray on paint to serve as a nice base color, and then spray on a second coat for decoration.

Iwata Hmm, I didn't know that.

Murakami That does mean that the painting takes some work, but without this material, we couldn't have worked out this balance of it being thick, but strong at the same time. And when it came to the hinge…

Fujita Yeah. At the thinnest parts it has a thickness of less than one millimeter.

Murakami And we completely rethought such aspects as clearance when assembling the various elements, performing incredibly detailed simulations for tolerance analysis.

Iwata The most difficult terminology ever are popping up in today's "Iwata Asks"! (laughs)

Confirmation that the speakers have been downgraded from the original 3DS :(

Iwata Of course, when it comes to other types of electric devices, lots of products have even smaller frames, but as for game systems within Nintendo's standards and conditions, I was impressed at how narrow it is. Today, I really wanted to ask how you did that.

Koshiishi The key was probably the speakers.

Fujita Yes. Speaker size influences frame design, but the first design picture that came to our design team was already such that the same speaker as in the Nintendo 3DS wouldn't fit.

Fujita As much as possible, we wanted to achieve what was pictured, so we searched for small speakers, and considered moving the speakers to the bottom half. We modified the DSi XL and put the speakers by the buttons, and checked how it sounded by listening to the opening theme music from Dragon Quest.

Iwata But if the speakers get smaller or sound comes from someplace other than the screen, then the sound may have half the effect.

Fujita Yes, musics play important role in the games, so we had a number of speaker makers introduce a variety of technologies and heard about some thinner, elongated speakers.

Iwata Oh, instead of round ones. Fujita Right. When we first heard about them, they still weren't practical, but they would really put out sound, so we thought they just might work. Then we did a lot of research along with the manufacturer and came up with the speakers that we used on the final product.

Iwata You made custom-sized speakers to fit within a limited, narrow space. How do they sound?

Fujita On a graph of acoustic characteristics, they aren't exactly identical to the Nintendo 3DS speakers. The speaker size is smaller than that of the ones on the 3DS so sonically it had a disadvantage. But by fine-tuning the structure and capabilities of the speakers itself, and then optimizing the sound with the software, we tried to have them sound like the ones on the 3DS as closely as possible.

Iwata I see. A lot of effort was put into it. Fujita It isn't something you can see, but we've done quite a lot.

INTERNAL DESIGN PORN!

ANTI GLARE PROTECTION!!! FINALLY! ON A NINTENDO HANDHELD AT LAST! (this one's for you @RedShell!)

Murakami Yes. On a LCD screen there are basically three reflective layers, which all of them reflects and cause glare. So this time, we specially treated all the layers. Reflectivity on the Nintendo 3DS was about 12%, but we decreased that to about 3%.

photo29.jpg

A bonus video demonstrating 3D, pre-installed on every 3DSxl :)

Tanaka And we've pre-installed on the 3DS XL with one sample video for experiencing the stereoscopic 3D. It's a CG movie that Nintendo made drawing upon 3D knowhow gained from the Nintendo 3DS, so I think it will really give you a taste of the capabilities of the 3DS XL.

And of course... (amongst other goodness)

Everyone (laughs)

Yeah £200 is steep and there's no way i'd pay if I didn't have the trade in option. But I have gone for the trade in deal. Getting £105 for my old 3ds is good. Otherwise I'd have to be able to sell it independently for around £80 to outdo the offer. Given that it's not pristine condition and everyone is a bargain hunter/ expect perfection on eBay, then taking away postage costs and all the ebay fees and the overall risk of an awkward buyer. Figured it's easier and as cost effective doing Game's trade in deal.

Awesome! icon14.gif

Last few images I saw of the XL seemed to suggest that glare would still be a problem, but I'm liking the sound of this.

Looking forward to checking it out for real though, I need to see it to believe it. :heh:

Where's the cheapest place to get this off the Internet? Still agent preordered and want one. The game offer is pretty tempting to be honest but want to check my options. Does anyone know if the sainsburys code is still valid?

Apparently this is now launching on the Friday rather than the Saturday. Or at least they can be picked up from GAME on that date. Anyone else heard different?
