madeinbeats Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 (edited) If you like going down the pub and supping a nice ale then you may have noticed prices are getting ridiculous. The government have taxed the hilt out of ale already and want to wack another 5% on it. Please consider emailing your PM in protest about this by clicking this link here: http://campaign.publicaffairsbriefing.co.uk/home.aspx?cid=de9346c6-800d-495e-8424-4e69d7b40b82 and then clicking on the 'Email your PM' link on the left. Just fill in your details and the rest is done for you. Many thanks, and please pass it on to anyone and everyone you know or soon going for a pint will be something only middle class people do on their birthday, and the only thing on offer will be characterless, mass produced foreign larger muck anyway. Magnus Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Is there anything I can sign to increase the beer tax?
Cube Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Is there anything I can sign to increase the beer tax? This is what my post was going to be.
Jimbob Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 It's like the high street, no-one wants it to go away. The pub is a staple for the social, and that scene is what many don't want to go away. What the government ought to tackle/focus more on that current, is the cheap stuff and the stupid offers that shops and many clubs/pubs* may run. Instead of focusing on binge drinkers, they seem to be driving the pub business out the window. The day when it is cheaper to buy 4 tins in a shop over a pint in a pub, is the day i stop drinking. *Clubs more than pubs, i.e. 4 bottles for £5
The fish Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 the only thing on offer will be characterless, mass produced foreign larger muck anyway. Be my guest and say what you like about Carlsberg, Stella or Coors, but if you say a bad word about high-quality foreign lager (or, for that matter, rare-but-sometimes-excellent British lager) I will wear your innards as a scarf.
madeinbeats Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 Could @bob @Cube @Magnus all please start their own their thread about orange juice and stop trolling this one? The clue was in the title really... and if that failed to explain the nature of the post, the opening line in the first paragraph certainly did. In plain English, the thread is for people who like to drink beer and like going to the pub, not the other way round. Cheers!
madeinbeats Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 No pun intended? No barflies on you is there.

I think the government try and make all the right noises about their goals when increasing beer tax, but I think they are just doing it out of greed, pure and simple; 'can we get away with it? probably, let's try it..' It's OK for the 16 year old rebel puritans to comment in here 'let's basically outlaw alcohol' because they witness the binge drink culture of like you say, the cluber crowds. But I'm a responsible drinker like most people are and love a good pint of real ale. I drink for the taste not with the goal to get smashed. A good pint is like a work of art. So, why are we being punished? Then there's all the pubs closing and people on kicked onto the dole queue. And what about the breweries. There's a couple here in Liverpool, Cains, which is the biggest, Joseph Holt down the road in Manc, and they both make quality ales. It would be a crime if these places had to start laying people off or shut down. They need to find something else to tax or just put all the tax on WKD & rubbish CGI films!!!:mad: This is a discussion board, if you don't want it to be discussed then don't post it here, simple. It's a different discussion, love... simple.
Aneres11 Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 It's a different discussion, love... simple. I already have my newcomer of the year for 2012 sorted!

Won't it be slightly odd if we start a thread about other drinks in order to talk about how increasing the duty on alcohol will have a mixture of two effects: Due to people being able to afford less, the amount of binge drinking will slightly reduce (especially around youngsters) and it will also help a very desperate economy due to more money going to the government, without adding extra tax on a necessity?

Ugh, can't stand it when people try to stifle discussion because they don't agree with it. Imagine how boring this forum would be if you could only have one opinion on something. I fully support tax on beer being increased. Out of all the things that could be taxed, it's certainly one of the least morally outrageous. As already pointed out responsible harmless drinkers are being punished for going out and socialising with a few scoops. Beer, as already pointed out, has been taxed to the hilt. There are thousands of other non-essential items the government could tax to stop people being fat and being dumb, so let's wack the tax on confectionery and anything celebrity or fashion related if you REALLY have philanthropy at heart. madeinbeats Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 I already have my newcomer of the year for 2012 sorted! I forgot to bow and scrape -- my apologies.
Sheikah Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 As already pointed out responsible harmless drinkers are being punished for going out and socialising with a few scoops. There are thousands of other non-essential items the government could tax to stop people being fat and being dumb, so let's wack the tax on confectionery and anything celebrity or fashion related if you REALLY have philanthropy at heart. And yet, beer is also a non-essential item. Your argument is basically "there's other bad things too, so you shouldn't tax this more". That argument never works. Fail topic.
madeinbeats Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 And yet, beer is also a non-essential item. Your argument is basically "there's other bad things too, so you shouldn't tax this more". That argument never works. Fail topic. Beer is begin taxed constantly... Don't you hate it when people try to stifle a discussion with 'Fail topic' when they haven't got a clue what they're talking about. Brain fail.
Sheikah Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Brain fail. Must be all the beer you're drinking. Bet you wish they taxed it more now.
MoogleViper Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 It's a different discussion, love... simple. No it's not. You've made a thread about the 5% increase in beer duty. Your opinion this that it's a bad thing, others may hold the opposite opinion. That's where a discussion comes from. It's not really a discussion if everyone agrees. If you didn't want discussion and just wanted to spread the link, then go elsewhere, like facebook or twitter. Or stop being a dick head for five minutes and acknowledge that other people have different opinions.
Serebii Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 It's actually good if it gets taxed more. Same with cigarettes The tax from alcohol and cigarettes primarily goes to the NHS. Remove or lower them and the NHS will collapse
madeinbeats Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 (edited) Must be all the beer you're drinking. Bet you wish they taxed it more now. What a come back... is there a comeback of the year poll? Soooo, any chance we can get this back on topic now please? (Note to self: Start threads entitled "Like the sound of your own keyboard? Let's talk utter shite here" and "I hate the taste of beer, do you think you have the moral high-ground too" and the future 1000+ post thread "Do you often argue with your own shadow? Yeah, same here." Perhaps this way there will be a new world of trolless on-topic threads!!!) Edited March 12, 2012 by madeinbeats
Daft Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I don't really drink anymore but this sucks. Prices are already fucking ridiculous. Would be nice if there was an alternative political party to choose instead of between Blue Tories, Red Tories and Sickly Yellow Tories.
