Dannyboy-the-Dane Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Thank you all for the nice birthday greetings. I've had a great day with some guests over for dinner, and now I've eaten too much.
Magnus Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 No? But you hear them use the definite forms of nouns with possessive pronouns all the time. What have I misunderstood? You'd say "den fødselsdagen", but you would say "din fødselsdag".
Dannyboy-the-Dane Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 You'd say "den fødselsdagen", but you would say "din fødselsdag". But don't you say "fødselsdagen min"?
Magnus Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 But don't you say "fødselsdagen min"? If you absolutely must have that word order, then yes, but it's very informal/less common and most people would say "min fødselsdag". In writing, you'd always use the latter. I think what it all boils down to is grammar always having lots of exceptions and never making any sense.

But what's a good birthday thread without a discussion about grammar? Again, thank you all for the lovely greetings.
Magnus Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Ah, I see. But what's a good birthday thread without a discussion about grammar? I was just thinking, "this is the lamest birthday thread ever", but it's not your birthday anymore, so I guess it's okay.
