flameboy Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Ok so through reading "Fun Inc. What Games are the 21st Century's most serious business" I came across a man called Richard Bartle who has studied lots into how we interact with virtual worlds. I carried out the test and came out as; Best, first and most are the favorite adjectives of the Achiever. They love comparison not only against others, but also with themselves. They enjoy setting goals, surpassing previous performances and hitting new milestones. They tend to have lots of high scores, badges, trophies and other concrete evidence of their successful endeavors--and they love it if someone notices these. However many enjoy the quiet satisfaction of knowing they simply did better than most. My mix up came as; RESULTS BREAKDOWN: A.E.K.S.Achiever: 67%, Explorer: 60%, Killer: 47%, Socializer: 27% Why not try out the test; http://www.gamerdna.com/quizzes/bartle-test-of-gamer-psychology
S.C.G Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Your gamerDNA is: Explorer The Explorer motto: "No stone unturned!" Description: It's not so much the wandering around and poking about, but that euphoric eureka moment the Explorer strives for. The joys of discovery do not necessarily involve geography, real or virtual. They may derive from the mental road less traveled, the uncovering of esoteric or hidden knowledge and it's creative application. Explorers make great theory crafters. The most infinitesimal bit of newness can deliver the most delicious zing to an Explorer. Secondary influences * Explorer Killers enjoy seeing the world, meeting interesting people...and killing them. EKs love all discovery, but finding an edge over the competition is best. Always seeking new opportunity, an EK likely knows the ten best places to find certain types of opponents, as well as ten different ways for taking them down. * Explorer Achievers have been there, done that and have the t-shirt...in fact they have a plethora of t-shirts, badges, trophies and other rewards. EAs are the completionists of the gamer world. They like to find new places, quests, easter eggs, unlocks, maps etc. and check them off as have, visited or beaten. Like real world travelers, EAs enjoy collecting memorabilia that helps them relive their experiences later. * Explorer Socializers are the glue of the online world. Not only do they like to delve in to find all the cool stuff, but they also enjoy sharing that knowledge with others. Explorer socializers power the wikis, maps, forums and theory craft sites of the gamer world. Reward Driven -27% Thoughtful 27% Exploratory 100% Physical -24% Competitive -45% Sadistic -21% I agree with most of it apart from the sadistic result as I can be sometimes... it just depends on the game. :p
Supergrunch Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 This seems like a bit of a rubbish test. It focuses exclusively on MMORPGs, which I couldn't care less about, then asks the same transparent questions over and over. For what it's worth, I got explorer...
nekunando Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I was making my way through the test when I just stopped and conceded that it just doesn't apply to me at all I've never played an MMORPG and although I'm sure many of the questions could be answered regardless, I read each of the first 15 questions and answers and felt that very little, if any, resonated with me in the slightest
Will Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Totally agree with the two points above. I really couldn't care less about MMORPG's so pretty much all of the questions were totally irrelevant to any of my playing styles. Then half way through the ridiculous amount of exactly the same questions it crashed. No way can I be bothered to go through that again.
Dannyboy-the-Dane Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 (edited) My results: Explorer: 80% Socializer: 60% Achiever: 47% Killer: 13% -20% physical 36% thoughtful 100% exploratory 55% social -77% competitive -11% sadistic Seems pretty accurate. Oxigen_Waste Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I tried the first 10 questions, and in 100% of the cases neither of the answers applied to me. It sucks.
The Peeps Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 The test doesn't really have any value for anyone who doesn't regularly play mmorpgs. I've played a couple but never seriously enough to join a guild or anything. I got explorer (seems to be a popular result...). Reward driven 100% Thoughtful 20% Exploratory 46% Competitive 46% Anonymous 15% Social -15% Secondary influences: killer, achiever, socialiser. I wouldn't really say this reflects me at all, even within an mmorpg
Shorty Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 *Open link* Do you tend to:Have items no one else does Know things no one else does *close tab*
flameboy Posted February 22, 2011 Author Posted February 22, 2011 For those who disregarding the test because its largely based on MMO its because it could they are the only games that contain all the elements that make up what you are as a gamer, sure there are other games that do as well. There is reams of psychology papers that have written about this (I'm researching it all at the moment as a university project) and you can see how the links most tie back to the social aspects of gaming and it ties back to living in virtual worlds a lot.
Ramar Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I got Socializer. Which seems pretty accurate from my MMORPG and other community based game experiences.
The Peeps Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I dislike the idea that the personality of a gamer is just based on mmorpg players though. It'd be the same if they were all questions about driving games, it's too specific to be relevant to gamers as a whole.
heroicjanitor Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I agree with Peeps. Got socialiser though.
jayseven Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 flameboy; that may be the case, but if I have no experience playing MMORPGS then I have no real way to respond to the questions seeing as I genuinely do not know what I'd actually respond to the scenarios presented, only how I'd like to think I'd react. However, I can probably summarise my gaming ways; I like to cooperate with my friends - be it a 2-player split-screen shredding of the horde or working in a team v team deathmatch. I like to explore the world presented to me and eek out novelties - however, I rarely achieve perfection in anything, cannot be bothered with directly competing with my friends. I actually prefer linear experiences to open worlds, and I generally the more 'essential' information I have to endure then the more likely I am to switch off. I prefer the illusion of choice.

Sounds just like me, although I do like a bit of free for all now and then if I'm playing an fps or something. My current favourite game is left 4 dead 2. I've got a good group of friends who play online so I can get a team of mates for versus practically every night. Nothing better than storming through a game with friends, shooting zombies and having a laugh.
Jonnas Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 This quiz doesn't apply for most gamers, definitely. When the questions apply to (and only to) MMORPGs, that's not being broad at all. Got to question 15 before finally giving up. Anyway, I would expect my RPG score to go Explorer > Achiever > Socializer > Killer
Beast Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I got Explorer. Achiever. Socialiser. Killer although I don't think I should have done the quiz because I dislike MMORPGs and half of the questions were about them but I did it anyway for the sake of this thread. If the questions were aimed more or less for everybody, I'd take it a little more seriously but I'm unsure. I personally think I'm more: Achiever. Socialiser. Killer. Explorer but that depends on the game.
