ReZourceman Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 These look awesome. BBC News[/url]"]Thames cable car given go-ahead The cable car will connect Greenwich and the Royal Docks, carrying up to 2,500 passengers-an-hour. It was designed to cut journey times between the O2 arena and the ExCel exhibition centre - both of which will host Olympic events. Newham Council approved plans on 18 January. Proposals will now be put before the Greater London Authority. The London Development Agency is contributing £1.21m to the cost of the project, which in December was estimated at a possible £40m. The cable car was originally projected to cost £25m. Greenwich council planning committee approved plans for the cable car on Thursday. Council plans state the car will extend 1,100 metres over the River Thames from North Greenwich Peninsula to Royal Victoria Dock, 54.1 metres above water. A Transport for London statement said: "The cable car is an exciting new proposal that would help address the need for more river crossings east of Tower Bridge. "It will also provide a unique addition to the capital's transport network and offer spectacular views of London's iconic skyline." Early concept design: New concept design: Cars:
Charlie Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 What's the estimated crossing time on these things? They look awesome though, totally unique for a city (AFAIK) to have something like this to cross a big river. Fantastic idea which will make it easy for foot passengers to travel from different venues on a way other than the tube.
jayseven Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 Lisbon has a couple in it's expo quarter that go along the coast. Probably only half as high and the trip lasted maybe 5-7 mins?
Platty Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 Would be amazing if they built that. A year and a half to build? Can it be done?
Cube Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 Would be amazing if they built that. A year and a half to build? Can it be done? I can see London being a complete mess with a load of unfinished projects by the time the Olympics come. We're going to make a total mess of the whole thing.
Ashley Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 I can see London being a complete mess with a load of unfinished projects by the time the Olympics come. We're going to make a total mess of the whole thing.
MadDog Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 I can see London being a complete mess with a load of unfinished projects by the time the Olympics come. We're going to make a total mess of the whole thing. That's the spirit.
Jimbob Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 I can see London being a complete mess with a load of unfinished projects by the time the Olympics come. We're going to make a total mess of the whole thing. Yeah, i see the same thing. The bridges my old company were making still ain't finished, because they are still making parts for them all now. They were meant to be done months ago. I can see them still building the stadium at the opening ceremony, in which case would that beat the China ceremony. 4,000+ workers up on scafolding whistling at all the female competitors as they walk past.
The Peeps Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 Looks amazing and I hope it can be ready in time. I wish I was still living in London
Cube Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 "Right, the stadium isn't finished. Let's all go to the school field and hold the Olympics there."
Platty Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 They should have built a bridge instead. They tried to get planning for a bridge a couple years back but it got a big NO. Was called the Thames Gateway Bridge and would be a multi lane toll bridge with bus lane and cycle/pedestrian path. Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thames_Gateway_Bridge
Debug Mode Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 This just reminds me how hilarious the london lights turning on was I was watching it live and it was all built up to be a fantastic event, and then I proceeded to piss myself laughing at how they didn't take into account the lights needed to warm up.
Platty Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 All I could think of whilst watching that video was "fucking tories".
Oxigen_Waste Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 They look awesome though, totally unique for a city (AFAIK) to have something like this to cross a big river. I know of at least 4 others. But only one is in a city prettier than London.
