Paj! Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 I want a new phone. My current is physically falling apart, and often just turns off randomly, or reception is lost for hours on end (in areas it should work). When phones first became "popular" among young adults/teens/children, I really didn't care about whether my phone was "stylish" or not. I've gone from bricks to just whatever my dad has handed me. My one request phone-wise was for a thinner phone so it wouldn't annoy me so much when it was in my pocket. Otherwise I've just taken what I've been given. But recently I've started to want things more. And now I want a nice phone. I want one that looks nice and does interesting things. Prefferably not over £200/£150. But then I have no idea how phone shopping works. I rarely see a "price". I have a sim card, I just want the handset. I see a lot of my peers have the Blackbery Curve, which seems nice. I have no use for a phone as a business asset, are Blackberrys still made for that purpose? Am I telling lies? Do I know what I'm talking about. Aren't iPhones like £500? Why do everyday people have them? I don't get it. Do iPhones accept Sim Cards? I know nothing about phones. RECOMMEND ME A PHONE THAT I WOULD LIKE CAUSE I DON'T KNOW kthxbi
Paj! Posted January 8, 2011 Author Posted January 8, 2011 Oh yeah. I've never ventured over there though, and am terrified of what I might find. Feel free to move it. *says to no one in particular*
The Peeps Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 I have an HTC Desire. My first smartphone and it's great. It's sleek and sexy. It's thin, has internets, loads of apps, etc etc. It's a smartphone so it does everything they do. I don't bother with apps though, I just use it for internetting at work and obviously calls and texts. The camera is quite good too. So in conclusion I recommend the phone that I have.
LegoMan1031 Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 Yeah iphones take normal sim cards. I would imagine that most people (including myself) have got a iphone on a contract rather than buying a handset with a pay as you go sim card (which im assuming u have?). They are expensive to buy seperatly! My friend has a blackberry which he loves, i think the stigma of it being just for business is gone (even my sister has a blackberry) now but i do know other ppl which have them for that.
Daft Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 Yeah iphones take normal sim cards. The iPhone 4 doesn't. It uses micro sim cards.
LegoMan1031 Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 The iPhone 4 doesn't. It uses micro sim cards. Ah.. i'm not cool enough to own a 4, just a 3GS for me!
Paj! Posted January 8, 2011 Author Posted January 8, 2011 Hmm I have no idea what the deal is, other than my dad has a contract that allows him to give me loads of free minutes (more than I ever use) and unlimited free texts. And free calls to other O2 phones. It was a special deal since they fucked up something and wanted his custom. But how would that affect if I got a contract phone? I'm terrified. He's no use. He told me to buy a new back for my existing phone. :/
The Peeps Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 I was on pay as you go for ages but the contract I'm on now benefits me much more. I get unlimited internet (500mb per month - barely scratch it), free e-mails, unlimited texts and 300 free minutes for £24.99. Not sure how long I have to pay it for (it's either 12 or 18 months) but I can easily pay that each month.
Platty Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Just got the HTC Desire myself. Highly recommend. It's like my favourite thing EVER at the moment.
James Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 (edited) I have a Curve 8520 and love it, I don't use it for business use, it has WhatApp messenger which allows for free cross-platform messaging. I have my hotmail emails synced up and also use bbm and that's it. Battery will last you four days easily if not longer. Oh and you have to pay for Blackberry Internet Service if you want to use it to it's full potential, Probably an extra fiver on your contract. Edited January 9, 2011 by James
Shorty Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Aren't iPhones like £500? Why do everyday people have them? I don't get it. Do iPhones accept Sim Cards? I know nothing about phones. What do you consider "everyday people"? I have an iPhone 4, payed full whack for the handset on launch, but I have a fairly low/standard salary and a hefty rent to pay. I just did this thing called saving your money and sold my previous phone to buy it. Anyway if you're not looking to change your contract, you need to know it includes data. If not, there's not much point looking at smartphones.
nightwolf Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 I'm going to fight the side of the blackberry. I've never had an update phone until I got my blackberry a couple of months ago and it's great, the internet is decent, the blackberry messenger is helpful and my email system is good. The ultimate perk? If you hate touch screen, it's the way to go. But it's up to you, I put my new sim card in with my old number, it never goes over the limit of internet etc and I get it for 22.50 a month. I have been finding smartphones, blackberries etc do now normally have an 18 or 24 month contract, I think there was only one or two phones that allowed 12 months now.
Jon Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 If you do a lot of texting, get a Blackberry. They're hands down the best for that, I can compose entire novels in minutes on the keypad. Unfortunately they still have a stigma of being only for business; which is bollocks. I owned an iPhone for over a year too and it's only better since, the App store is excellent but i'm personally not a massive touch screen fan. My contract is up in the summer, so for me it will probably be between the next Blackberry entry in the Bold line or the newest incarnation of the iPhone.
Ashley Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 They're hands down the best for that, I can compose entire novels in minutes on the keypad. Ahum.
Pit-Jr Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 I have a Palm Pre Plus and LOVE it, but i have a feeling it will be my last smartphone. I got it with an unlimited data plan for less than i pay for broadband at home. Fair enough! But data plans are becoming ridiculous with no end in sight. To illustrate, i began a contract for $30 a month unlimited data last year. By the time my contract is up, the unlimited option will be replaced by 5GB of data for $50 or 10GB for $80 It was nice while it lasted
Shorty Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 That's funny, they're getting cheaper all the time here. I pay £7.50/mo for 3GB/unlim txts/600 mins.

nightwolf Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 Ahum. I have to say I've tried this on a friends phone, I can understand why it's used, but still, it sucks, it really bloody annoys me. But then I detest touch screen phones, I can imagine if I had gone with a htc like I originally planned too I'd have thrown it by now. I have no patience, haha. :awesome:
Charlie Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Paj; Here are the steps to follow for getting yourself a new phone: 1) Analyse your current situation -Is your SIM card PAYG or Pay Monthly (contract) -Are you getting value for money? Would it be cheaper to go to a contract and get a free phone while you're doing that? -What is your current spend each month on your phone? 2) Are you willing and/or financially able to sign yourself into an 18 month or 2 year contract? 3) If you're spending £20+ on PAYG each month then I'd recommend going to a contract phone as you would most likely get more for your money and a phone with it at no extra cost 4) Decide which phone you want. -iPhone's are subsidised on a contract to around £200 (depending on the model) which is why "everyday" people can afford them. -If you're looking for a smartphone (which I'd highly recommend, everyone I know who's made the move, including people who previously didn't want one) would never go back then you have 3 main choices; Blackberry, Android or the iPhone. -Decide yourself which option is best for you. Read reviews of the different options. Look through the Mobile Phone chat thread here for people talking about Android phones. -If I were you I'd go for the iPhone as you ccould get the iPhone 4 (top end of your budget) which is a fantastic device and is an iPod Touch too so in theory you could sell your iPod/MP3 player to offset the cost. 5) Evaluate the different options with different networks to find the best deal 6) Get your PAC code from your current network so you can transfer over your number 7) BOOM
