What Have You Bought?

£42 a month is just insane. Presumably you'll be having insurance on top of that?

For £12.50 a month I managed to get a pretty decent phone with 300 mins, unlimited texts and data. A pretty sweet deal, but I suppose that's what happens when you get something very unpopular (Samsung Omnia 7) over something in very high demand (iPhone).

Also, the fact that no one has a Windows Phone appeals to my inner hipster and thus I like it automatically :heh:

Yeah, the same amount of allowance on O2 without an iPhone 4S is £27pm. So the extra is just for the phone really, but like I said I love the iPhone, wanted the 4S but didn't have £500 where I could just go out and buy one.

No i wont be getting insurance with that, I used to insure everything till I looked at my money and realised how much I was spending (TV, laptop, phone etc). I had my 3GS insured for like a year and realised I was pouring like £15 a month down the drain.

Although saying that I have been looking at getting an 'ultimate reward account' with my bank Halifax who offer things like mobile phone insurance, car breakdown cover etc for so much a month, not really looked into that yet though.

Pouring £15 down the drain, until you drop your iPhone down a drain, then you've poured £500 down the drain

down the drain down the drain

Best hope I never do that then! :P

But taking out insurance or not taking it out is a gamble but one I am willing to take, the amount of times I have dropped my 3GS is amazing yet it still works fine!

Even with insurance i'm pretty sure the excess is quite high for a iPhone just because of how much they cost.

Yeah the excess is typically £100 on cheap insurance (ie through your bank account) and £50 on the better ones (such as O2).

The part that pisses me off is that it's the name iPhone that costs you £100, even if it's a 2G. If you've got something like a HTC Sensation or Galaxy Nexus, which costs the same to replace, the excess is much lighter.

Ended up worth it for me though

Ah, a man talking from experience!

Regarding the price I totally agree! As much as I love them the price of them and Apple products in general seem very steep to me. But I still got one anyway. :p

I don't have £500 to just go and buy the phone first! :heh:

This should surely ring alarm bells that perhaps you shouldn't be getting the phone? :p

I can see how the debt culture came about.

Yeah I could imagine that they wouldn't give you an iPhone without a 48 month contract. But if you can buy the phone, you can slap it on a tariff that's even cheaper than that one (£10 a month, giffgaff). I dunno, it can't be that hard for people to scrape together a (not huge) amount of money to save hundreds down the line?

Of course, that doesn't have two (fairly weak) glass panels (although I have no idea if they improved them on the 4S).

It's not that unusual, same way most people buy cars and sofas on finance. You can't afford £500 upfront, but it's not going to hurt to deduct £30-40 from your paycheque for a a couple of years.

That's the issue though (with this country), that it's not unusual. People are basically having things despite not being able to realistically afford them, and paying far more for them in the process. If people get credit for about 5-6 different things at once you can easily see why so many are in debt.

Nope! :p

I have just decided to basically pay for it monthly rather than all upfront in essence.

Yeah your right in the sense that by planning things with money can make you afford more and save money. I never used to have any wages free at the end of the month (and I still live at home...) but I started using Excel to write down all my spending and plan money etc and by doing that have saved hundreds a month to pay off a rather large credit card (I know this is kind of proving your point regarding debt but i'm being honest. :) ) I made mistakes and i'm dealing with it.

As Shorty said that is how I am looking at it regarding this, I also have my car on fianance which to be honest I regret to some extent as I have had three cars and I like having nice cars... all three on fianance and because of said problem above I have never saved any money up for a car so have just kept paying monthly (this is something I am working on long term though as well as going to start saving to hopefully move out. Excel saving the day there). Btw when I say large credit card, it was never unmanageable, it just wasn't going anywhere!!

Sorry cube I might be mis-reading your post but are you saying the screens on the 3GS are not very good or are good?

I know other people that have cracked screens with it but I have dropped mine on the kitchen floor, on a path etc and mine has been fine (unless it always landed on it's back! ha)

Ha! Let me throw this out there to balance it a little :heh:

I love the iPhone 4S and wouldn't trade it for any other phone on the market today. Glass is unavoidably fragile, but it has been strengthened to a degree; it has survived more than one drop-from-a-height by yours truly. It's a fast, very cool device with an enormous range of great apps and a jaw-droppingly sharp and bright display.

If you're worried about breaking it, but can't spend £10-£15 a month on insurance, spend £10 once on a nice, padded leather case :)

Congrats on your new phone @Mike1988uk

I bet the last page or so has dulled your enthusiasm somewhat!

Cheers Odwin!

Today is the first day I have really used it as my number has now been ported across! :)

Going to sell off my 3GS now to make me some money back.

Btw, totally off topic but I just noticed your location says Maccesfield... is that Mac in Cheshire?

Ha! Let me throw this out there to balance it a little :heh:

Thanks :p

Yeah, I think I will have a proper read of what the bank offer in that 'ultimate reward account' as it's £10 a month for several things and I do need to get some breakdown cover.

I just just bought a iPhone sock which come from Ebay today. Will have a think if I want to get something else!

Ha. What @Sheikah said. It's free in the sence I didn't have to pay anything up upfront.

Just signed up for £42 a month for 900 minutes, unlimited texts, 500mb internet with O2 and as I said didn't have to pay anything for the phone.

Holy mother..

Why did you not haggle with them? For instance Orange want me to pay about that for a samsung s2, I seriously doubt I'll be paying above 35 when I inform them that I've been with them for 7 years (they did this previous, got my contract from 35 to 22.50 a month.)

I've never bothered with insurance or cases.

I had my iPhone 3G for 3 years, it's scratches to shit on the back and has some cracks on it.

But it's fucking phone, right?

You don't get insurance because you might scratch and crack your phone.

You get it because you might drop it.

In water.

I wouldn't know.

I'm always going to respond to your messages like this from now on.

Why are you texting while in front of your toilet?
