Choze Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=218007 New York, NY - June 22, 2009 - Rockstar Games, the world-renowned publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), is pleased to announce that one of the highest-rated handheld games of all time, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, will be making its way to the PSP (PlayStationPortable) handheld entertainment system. Developed by the award-winning studio Rockstar Leeds, in conjunction with series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will be available at retail on UMD and digitally from the PlayStationNetwork in North America and Europe this fall. "We're proud to extend this truly unique handheld Grand Theft Auto experience to PSP and offer a downloadable version of Chinatown Wars for PSPgo," said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. "Rockstar Leeds has shown incredible talent in creating games that raise the bar in terms of depth and innovation on portables, and with Chinatown Wars we have a rich, fast-paced, and incredibly addictive entry into the series." "Rockstar's work with the GTA series has been an enormous part of the success of PlayStation platforms," said Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America. "We're excited to welcome the critically acclaimed Chinatown Wars to the outstanding line-up of great games headed to the PSP platform this fall." Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars follows the story of Huang Lee, a young Triad who travels to Liberty City after the mysterious death of his father. Within the game, players will navigate their way through the streets as they uncover the truth behind an epic tale of crime and corruption within the Triad crime syndicate, delivering the unprecedented amount of depth that has become a true trademark of the franchise. Specifically built for the PSP platform with upscaled widescreen graphics, enhanced lighting and animation; and including all-new story missions; this version of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will take full advantage of the power of the PSP system. Didnt take long did it?
killer kirby Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Ugh...another damn game I don't want on the PSP >_< I swear, remake after remake after remake games like these come on the PSP, is that hard to make something new and original on the PSP? The only game I want on the PSP is Ys 7 and thats it.
D_prOdigy Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 The more people that experience the first good GTA game in years, the better.
Tellyn Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 and offer a downloadable version of Chinatown Wars for PSPgo If they think it bombed on the DS, they ain't seen nothing yet. Jokes. Chinatown Wars was utterly brilliant, seems a bit of a dodgy move to bring yet another GTA port to the PSP though. I believe it's still £9.99 on Play.com, for anyone who has a DS. Good deal for possibly the best DS game this year.
Ike Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 The only game I want on the PSP is Ys 7 and thats it. There's gonna be a Ys game for PSP? Is it getting an English release?
Daft Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 It'll be interesting to see what they add. Wasn't expecting it. Good signs for the PSPs little rebranding.
killer kirby Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 There's gonna be a Ys game for PSP? Is it getting an English release? Who knows, if not then expect fans of it to translate it. (Huraay for Custom firmware PSP) o(^_^)o
Aimless Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Not too surprising given the ostensibly disappointing sales on the DS; time could yet prove it to be a success, but that's not how game companies work. The worst thing about the DS game is the music, so hopefully they'll redo that given their new found storage space. I do rather like all the touch screen interactions and think they add to the game, but at the same time I don't think their absence is a deal breaker. Personally I can't see my buying this as I already have it on the DS — and, err, still haven't finished it — but if I didn't this game would appeal to me as a PSP owner more than the Stories games; top-down simply works better on a handheld, in my opinion.
dwarf Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 More games like echochrono and puzzle games please, the occasional console sort of game is nice but why buy portable games when they could offer better experiences on a home console? God of War isn't a good portable game I don't think, even if the values in it are high. The DS has the right idea with many quirky puzzle games, it's just unfortunate that the majority of handheld games are shite for both systems.
Rummy Posted June 23, 2009 Posted June 23, 2009 I don't see this as a big fussing deal, I was much more offended when Capcom sold out RE4 than this. Rockstar did a top job in showing some DS exclusivity, even if it was shortlived(and tbh I don't see how this game can be as good on PSP as on DS, the touchscreen stuff was very well integrated imo). They're a company who want to make money, and never promised long term exclusivity, did they? Besides which it's not like it's the first time they did it, I swear they broke the sony mold when they ported SA to the MS systems? Regardless, it's an excellent game and I do agree with d_prodigy, the more people who get to experience it(even if it's not as good as the DS one), the better.

flameboy Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 Yep few extra lighting effects, but other than that not a lot else. I love my PSP just as much as my DS but this is one game I won't be getting. Without the touch screen stuff it loses one of the main reasons for buying it and what made it stand out in the GTA franchise.

The touch segments were effectively minigames, but they blended in seamlessly with the experience.
Cube Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 The first half of the game was fun, but I can't really be bothered with the rest of the game.
Dan_Dare Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 shall be playing this on the 9th. I'll let you guys know how it goes.
killer kirby Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 lol wtf!? Well done rockstar, instead of making it look awesome like the last two PSP game, you give us something that looks like the same DS game.
Nintendohnut Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 The only thing that would make this worth the money is fully animated cut-scenes, rather than the still screens that the DS had. But I agree, most of the charm of the DS version came from the touch screen elements. The PDA especially was exceptionally well-implemented.

I've been thinking about it even more...if people are desperate to play a none DS top town GTA they should get GTA, GTA 2 or even GTA London.
Tellyn Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 It does look like Rockstar are just trying to make a bit more money back from the title since it hasn't been a runaway success, the improvements are minimal. Personally I think it would have performed a lot better had Rockstar given it a proper advertising campaign, something big like the GTA IV one. That's enough moaning from me, we'll see what Dan Dare has to say after his playtest.
flameboy Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 Also now coming to iphone; http://www.destructoid.com/grand-theft-auto-chinatown-wars-beaterator-come-to-iphone-146897.phtml Two new Rockstar Games titles for your iPhone or iPod Touch have been announced today. I'm game for both. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, the game you currently know as a Nintendo DS title (and later this year as a PSP download), has just been announced for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It's coming this fall, totally retuned to work with the iPhone's controls. Liberty City in your phone. That should be pretty kick-ass. No price or other details were given. Also coming to the platform is Beaterator. The title, a collaboration between producer Timbaland and Rockstar Games, lets you create beats and songs on-the-go, with your phone. It comes from the same developers that put together Chinatown Wars, actually. It contains thousands of loops and sounds that you can put together to make your own jams. This is also dropping in the fall on the iTunes App Store, and again, no price was given.
