What's wrong with a Focus? For a lot of people a car has a purpose, and needs to be cost effective. A Focus can do 55miles to the gallon +

Only going to the petrol station once every month is sweeet. :P

(ie yay for new cars)

They're just mind numbingly boring, which is why I couldn't drive one. Especially if I had to spend 7k for the priveledge.

Even if I look at it from a "normal" point of view, 7k for a fairly average, second hand car is hardly cost effective when there are far better cars (either with more modern conveniences or better MPG (only the 1.8 diesel model of Focus will do anywhere near 55mpg combined btw)) for the money.

On a side note, my 1990 1.8l Scirocco seems to get better MPG than my 1999 1.0l Polo. An old coupe getting more MPG than a relatively modern, "economical" family hatchback? Somethings not right!

well what you see as beautiful I see as hideous. And what you see as ugly/boring I think is pretty nice. Neither of us are right, so there's no point in arguing based on opinions.

I wouldn't buy an old car with 50k+ miles on it. I know people that have and have had to pay more than the car is worth to fix it when it breaks down.

my dad bought his focus 1.5 (I think its 1.5) which does about 50 miles to the gallon, added onto the fact its new and he's saving on mot monies.

p.s 1990 is not relatively modern in terms of cars :P

True, I just thought I'd explain why I didn't like them.

It works both ways though, I know people (my Dad included) who have spent tonnes on modern cars to get fixed, when my old cars have soldiered on. I've barely had any major problems with my cars TBH (exept when I drove one to Germany and back! And it still made it without actually breaking down!). Plus any repairs on a new car will always be more expensive than on newer cars due to the specialist parts/tools needed to repair them and the complexity of their components requiring more time to diagnose. You/a mechanic can repair an old car with a very basic tool kit. Hell, to change a lightbulb on modern cars nowerdays requires a special toolkit and an hour or two to spare. My cousin just spent an extortionate amount on a wiper blade for his modern car because they require a special type!

Just to show that my old cars arent some low milage rarities, they've all had around 100k on the clock.

True on the MOT front, but buy a car old enough and you don't have to pay tax! (I'm being a bit silly now BTW  )

I said the 1999 car was relatively modern and I meant relative to the 1990 car. The Scirocco is 9 years older, almost twice the engine size and is a sports car and is beating a family car in terms of MPG. I think my Polo might be knackered! At least it keeps my Scirocco off the road when they start salting the roads.

In short, modern cars aren't for me, but I can see the appeal. Same goes for Focus', but I still consider 7k too much for one.

comparatively ;)

I agree with both your side and mine, of course there are both sides to the opinion and neither is really more right. A lot of people see cars, like you do, as something to be looked at in awe. Some, like me, just see it as functional. Sure I'd love to own a Bugatti Veyron, but i'm not made of money :D

my car is rotten with rubbish and grit and crap that seems to kick up at around this time of the year (not to mention all the flooding that's been happening) I think the sides of my car could do with a t-cut but that is extreme elbow grease :P

To be honest, I love all apects of cars. I love them for the "awe" aspect as well as their "workhorse" abilities. Like music, there is a car that is perfect for everyone IMO. I consider them one of the most important inventions (so far at least) ever made.

That's exactly why I got my Polo. I was happy to just cut back to one car after my old one was stolen, but my boss was selling the Polo very cheap, so I figured it would be good to keep the salt off the Scirocco. Plus my Dad wanted to go halves so he had a cheap runaround to keep fuel bills down when he couldn't be arsed to drive his car.

A cheap run around is a good idea, I've been thinking of getting one myself to keep the Elise of the road during the winter. Trouble is I think I'd miss driving it every day.

It's a fucking car!

But if you care about aesthetics that much. We all know just who you should turn to.

Not all people who like cars turn them into mobile stereos. But even then, what's the problem with doing that? It's a hobby. Not my cup 'o' tea (by a country mile), but each to their own.

And besides, I like my car (and any older car) for more things than just aesthetics.

Westwood enjoys cars. And he would make you enjoy yours even more. Innit.

I'm not saying there is a problem. You're the one who's finding certain cars boring. And I am giving you the perfect solution: Pimp It.

And besides, I like my car (and any older car) for more things than just aesthetics.

Tell me this is sex related. PLEASE.

I'm just starting to learn how to drive, as I got a car for my birthday. Can't remember what kinda it is, think a Renault Megane? (Car makes and specs don't interest me in the slightest). It might be, looks a bit like this;

renault_megane_coupe_2.0_16v_kusi86.jpg

But then it's a blue car. I can't really tell the differences except if they're glaring.

Surely you can remember what your own car is.

If i bought you a car, and you couldnt remember the name of it id assume you were being being ungrateful.

I can understand not knowing things like your engine size, BHP, and other specs of it.

I have discovered a variety of pieces of music that make a car journey significantly more awesome. I was tempted to post this in the music thread, but I figured that people might not want me spreading my car love all over the forum.

Hayseed Dixie - Duelling Banjos - Instantly transforms a dull car ride into "I'm gunna chase one of them there hommersekshuls I done seen on the teevee!"

Broadcast Yourself
Audio

Teh Logginz - Danger Zone - You'll be buzzing the pensioners at the bus stop.

Broadcast Yourself

Wagner - Ride of the Valkyries - Powerful stuff. A journey to Tescos for a Pot Noodle and a bottle of Fanta never seemed so epic.

I was told it's a Renault Megane and I've probably seen it on the back/front/wherever it tells you. I've not been in it for ages (lessons in a different car obviously), and I've only been driving in it for short periods, and not spent time fawning over it's specs. I really wouldn't have minded what kind of car it was (if it was "rubbish" or whatever). I didn't think "Oh I wish they'd got me x trendy car, oh I'm so upset!". It's a car to me, and I was grateful to have one whatever it may be.

My car make knowledge extends to knowing that ferrari's looks different to normal cars, golfs or polos (one) are generally small, what mini's look like and not much else.

Classical music, for a reason I can't quite put my finger on, is most definitely the best stuff to drive to. I need to get more on my iPod as a blasting along roads is great to it. I always always have racing games set to classical tunes (mostly PGR) when I can.

Does anyone on here ride bikes or the like? Been thinking of maybe getting myself a little scooter or something similar for weekly work driving. Thinking I can stop using the Lotus so much and even better avoid having to queue the whole damn time.

On the other hand I've never been on one in my life, is this a good idea or am I crazy?

They are a lot of fun to ride, very handy and very cheap. They are a lot of fun in the summer, but do not ride them in the winter. They are very unpleasant, and not as safe as a car.

I assume you'd want one for London?

When did you pass your driving test?

That sounds nasty! Fully recovered now I hope?

Yeah it would be for London, not a lot of riding, just to and from work really which is just a few miles each way.

Passed my driving test about 7 years ago or so, never done a CBT or any bike tests though, not even 100% sure what you have to do despite having a fair few bike riding mates. My main worry would be Winter, if it's raining I'd want to use the car, defeating the point completely. I think it would be great riding in on an early spring morn, but then I'd be tempted to take the car with the roof down...

My MOT is £250+ which is annoying.

Not a good time for costs like that, I need to get my car serviced in the next couple of week's which I'm not looking forward to!

Yeah I'm recovered now, although the wrist still clicks and my elbow gets stiff occasionally.

"If you obtained your car licence before 1 February 2001 you do not need to complete a CBT to ride a moped."

Looks like you're just after that then.

For a CBT you start of somewhere like a car park, and just do basic turns and such (stopping and starting) then they hook you up to a headset and you follow them around for a while, then you take the lead and they give you instructions. It's really easy.

A CBT runs out after 2 years, however you could get an A1 license (probably better to get a CBT first and then do the A1 when it's running out). An A1 license is the same as a CBT but you don't have to wear L plates and it doesn't expire (and I think your insurance will be cheaper).

What kind of bike you thinking of getting? Scooter/bike, auto/gears, 50/125 etc.?

EDIT: Actually I'm not sure if it does expire.

"for moped entitlement only, if you pass your car driving test whilst your DL196 is still current or complete a CBT course and obtain a DL196 after passing your car test, the certificate is not subject to expiry, you will therefore need to keep your DL196 certificate safely. Please note that this applies to mopeds only, for riding motorcycles as a learner the DL196 remains valid for two years"

I was thinking it would be a very low powered scooter. It would purely be a commuter vehicle as I'd be using the car for fun/weekend driving. Haven't really thought much further than that. Been browsing Vespas which look very cool but maybe a lot of money to put on something like this.

For a massive fan of cars/driving very little of it transfers to bikes at this moment, I'm completely new to it. What did you have? Basically I want something that's cheap, easy to ride and I can fit my lunch inside it.

I had a Piaggio NRG MC3. Fast for a 50cc. We had it de-restricted and then the exhaust blew up, so we put a Gianelli pipe on it (just a standard one, not a race pipe) and I could get about 60mph on a flat (you can get more if you're lighter). It's big for a 50 though, dunno whether you'd want a bigger one or a smaller one.

If you want one that rides like a bike but has no gears then get a Gilera DNA.

If you want a bike with gears then a good one is an Aprilla RS(50/125). They are very quick with the 125 reaching top speeds of over 100mph.

If you want something a little cheaper to run then get a 4 stroke. They are more fuel efficient but they aren't as quick or as responsive.

Any more questions just ask.

Thanks for the advice, this definitely seems like a good possibility. Looking at the prices of some of these I reckon I could pay for it with the money I save on petrol from not driving the car every day.

Seems like Piaggio own every brand of Scooter I've ever heard of. Think I'll have a look through and post up some of my ideas.

Don't get an Aprilia, it will last 2 months before you need an engine rebuild.
