Posted June 19, 2009 Very nice buttons. What engine is it? What does it drive like? I've fancied a 207 GT, but I can't afford it, not by a long way. Besides it's a little too small for me. i find it very roomy but then im short and have to move the seat wayyyyy up (no idea what specs are in the car but i think its a 1.4ltr).... ... its the sexiest car ive ever driven (out of 4....lol).. and such a smooth car to drive ... i love it i really do Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Posted June 19, 2009 (edited) Ooh I always wondered what that stuff was. I'll clean it out then. Does it make it any better on oil by any chance? Defo clean it out. You will notice the difference when driving for sure if it's really clogged up. The car will start instantly and be turning over nicely rather than struggling whilst being idle. I just use this stuff from halfords which works well. Better on oil? yeah it helps but depending on how often you are topping up you may have a leak. If you feel like it's always wanting oil you may have a leak somewhere so it's worth picking up some Redex from Halfords and pouring that in This doesnt fix big holes ie if you are leaking oil all over the road but it does help smaller leaks. Posted June 19, 2009 Warning about MKIII fiesta's... Clean out the oil filler cap and the pipes to the air filter on a regular basis. They suffer badly from "Smeg" which is where condensation mixes with the oil and causes this yellow gunk to clog up everywhere. Not good for the car and causes it to conk out a lot and you'll notice it being a bit sluggish...... A nice clean up with some carb cleaner and it will be running like new! I didn't know the MkIII was manual anyways and I don't see how that has much to do with the oil. The Oil shouldn't be mixing with anything, manual or automatic. It's the way the MKIII's engine is built and the way the coolent runs through the engine causing condensation (water) to mix with the oil in the head gasket area specifically the filler cap. The filler cap is typically cooler than the rest of the cam area and so the oil/water mix tends to condense there and cause this smeg. It could also possibly be a leaking head gasket where water is creeping in and mixing with the oil which could lead to serious problems obviously. But if your dipstick is clean of the smeg then It probably isnt a failing head gasket but just more the condensation mixing with the oil in the filler cap. It's a well known issue for MKIII Fiestas and I think Escorts. Just do a little google search im sure you'll find someone moaning about it. If you've never seen the stuff i'll try get a pic next time I clean mine out. It's like a yellow mayonnaise. Posted June 19, 2009 Currently driving a Lotus Elise S. Had it about 3 months now and it's absolutely fantastic. Not amazingly fast (though still pretty damn quick), cornering and braking are where it really comes alive. It really is the best thing I have ever driven on the road. You're thinking about gearbox oil, which is seperate and very rarely requires any attention. Condensation of what? I don't know of anything that should turn oil yellow. Mineral oil starts off a clear yellow, so it's not that hard to imagine. I think synthetic does too. It just turns black very quickly in an engine. When oil mixes with water in the engine, it leaves a whitish residue often referred to as "mayo". It can be a sign of water leaking into the oil or oil leaking into the water depending on where the mayo is building up (oil filler or coolant filler). One is serious, one isn't. I forget which (I think it's ok to find mayo in the oil filler, but not in the coolant. I'm not sure though). The one which isn't serious is usually caused by condensation in the oil filler caused by short journeys on cold days and is nothing to really worry about. ..oh y'know and for people who physically can't drive manuals. Yeah, I know someone who is in that situtation. But Automatics aren't referred to as "slushmatics" for nothing, they're generally a bit crap. When I drove one, I never felt fully in control of the car. If left in drive at junctions, the car would always try and creep forward unless you held the brake. And the acceleration never felt consistant due to not being able to manually select the right gear. It didn't feel right. Posted June 19, 2009 Automatics are more for people who just want to get from place to place with as little hassle as possible. I'm surprised there aren't more autos on the road to be honest. I'm telling you it's a very common problem with old model fiesta's. Most of the advice given by the mechanics is to just "clean it up and carry on driving". It's true that shorter journeys effects it more due to the car not having enough time to warm up.
