I enjoyed it.

Wasn't blown away or anything, but I wasn't expecting to be.

It felt like quite a mediocre episode as Red Dwarf goes, but I didn't really mind that as such, I just enjoyed them being back together and catchin' up!

I also think these three episodes will work better when we've seen them all as oppsed to just this stand alone one.

I liked the female Hologram much more than I thought I would, I think it was good she had a 'comedic' russian accent, it gave her much more of a personality straight away than the new Kochanski ever had! And yeah she avoided the question about the hard light hologram system, so there's still more to come from her.

Funniest line for me...

"In my country, we have a word for people like you"

"In my country we have several"

Not sure I really like how they are actually now returning to earth; the water monster etc... just seems a very 'oh how convenient' moment, but still!

And yeah it said nine years later so it's definately following on.

I hated the lack of laughter track. Yes, I need when to be told when to laugh.

Yeah, so did I. And I hate it when people say that - "You need to be told when to laugh". Bollocks. I didn't laugh at the majority of things that laughter accompanied in Red Dwarf episodes, but I found those parts funny. It's not to do with needing to be told when to laugh, but rather that it feels as if what was there is now missing. It's also hugely important to the feel of the show, and removing it makes it feel very, very different. And when we're all expecting Red Dwarf, and not some other show, big changes aren't a good thing.

Anyway, I felt the episode was quite slow paced. Normally they'd be firing off jokes and saying a lot more in the same space of time, and there'd be loads more sarcy comments. It wasn't really that funny, and let's not forget; it's supposed to be a comedy.

I kind of felt there were some awkward gaps where the laughter track just would have made it flow better. I watched the old episode after and in terms of jokes it was all pretty much the same, but the canned laughter just makes it work better.

Also, I'm not a fan of the unnecessary CGI.

I did like it overall, though.

For me Red Dwarf was never about the CGI and that's why the excuse that the filming of the show (something they again did has become too complicated for a studio audience doesn't wash with me. They have clearly created the specials more as a spectacular show off piece. What was to stop them filming the bedroom scenes in front of an audience nothing?

I have a theory about Katrina (what ever she is called) not based on any spoilers I've read and I am probably well wide of the mark

That she is Holly...The only reason I say this is because she said her mission was keep to Dave safe. Something Holly has said numerous times throughout the series, that was his reasoning behind bringing Rimmer back from the dead as well as why he helped the Nanobots recreate Red Dwarf...Like I said madness but its just as believable as the rest of the series...

If something is funny people will laugh anyway, regardless of whether there is laughter present from either a studio audience or a can, there was only one bit that actually made me laugh in this latest ep and that was when they were about to go diving and you see Cat in that sparkling purple diving suit, but I wouldn't have found it any more funny if there had been canned laughter present but I would have still laughed.

It is an age old argument that never seems to go away. For me its not so much about being told when to laugh. It is more the actors feeding off that reaction of the audience. If you watch the documentary on the Series VIII DVD they all explain about how excited they are about getting back to performing in a studio audience environment and that they all thrived off the buzz it gave them.

I laughed twice both related to the Cat when he went out of the room going AWWWWEEEEEEEEEE like he used to before he became more human towards the end of the series and then with the Purple Suit. I think they though undid that by playing the same messed up hair joke twice. That's not to say there weren't other jokes in it I did find myself chuckling over them...just not full blown laughing.

I actually liked the episode, ok it wasn't as good as it was made out to be but it was still good. The lack of canned laughter actually made it more funny and enjoyable. I didn't like all the CGI, c'mon they CGI'd the Skutters who wern't CGI'd at all in any episode they were in previously.

I don't get how it can be based 9 years later, unless they based it on the alternative ending of Series 8 with the crew outside in the Starbugs etc and Lister and Co inside on Red Dwarf congering. Thats the only way this can feasibly work in my eyes.

And many people will be pleased how Kochanski is now dead, or returned to her actual dimension with her "better" Lister.

Still, looking forward to the next episode. Hopefully more will be explained about the 9 year gap.

I liked it a lot. There were times after jokes when there was an empty gap where laughter used to be and that did sometimes make the delivery sound a bit unnatural. However, I filled in the gaps with my own chuckling. I loved the dynamic between Katerina and Rimmer:

"You have 24 hours to get your affairs in order then you will be taken offline, your personal files erased, your hardisk removed, ejected into space and, when we are a safe distance away, detonated by nuclear fission explosion."

"You really don't like me do you."

Well, i'm a pretty big Dwarf fan so I have been looking forward to seeing what they came up with. Hated series VII and VIII personally. The characters seemed to change somewhat, Kryten became a blubbering idiot, Cat was even dumber than normal and Rimmer was just way over the top. One good thing about the new episode is they all seem to be back to the way they were but it wasn't overly funny. I'm kinda just watching it for the story.

I kinda think that is the only way you can watch it. Amongest a lot of Red Dwarf fans there is this notion that Grant was the comedy writer and Naylor the plot. I agree 100% with what you say about VII and VIII, the characters all became parodies of themselves largely, I hated Kryten's whingy voice he acquired, I hate how the Cat just became stupid rather than a cat and like you said Rimmer was over the top. However I think in terms of plot there were some great ideas, Tikka to Ride for example fantastic idea.

The return of Red Dwarf for its first new episode in ten years was a huge hit for multichannel Dave last night, according to early ratings figures.

The first episode of a three-part reunion special, Red Dwarf: Back To Earth, pulled in 2.06m (10%) for Dave between 9pm and 9.30pm. A further 341k (1.9%) watched at 10pm on timeshift channel Dave ja vu.

A subsequent screening of a classic episode took 1.01m (5.1%) at 9.30pm.

The success of Red Dwarf helped Dave to a primetime share of 3.2%, making it the most popular multichannel station of the night by a margin of almost one share point.

Guest Captain Falcon

If the jump from episode 2 to 3 is the same as the one from 1 to 2, we should be store for one hell of episode because that was fantastic.

Fantastic brilliant...loved all the Bladerunner references what with it being my favourite film! I love how they explained that Back to Earth is set after Series 10...so that explains why we havn't remotely had any answers... I'm not sure I approve of all the breaking the 4th Wall stuff but I'm pretty sure there is more to it than seems at first....Think the 1st part in the context as a whole fits now...

Really liked the Bladerunner stuff, man they nailed it totally..

Were we watching the same thing? I didn't think it was that great at all! It was funnier than the first part, in places, but I really didn't like the 'we're characters from a TV show. Buy our DVDs, read SFX and watch Dave!' angle. *shrugs* Maybe it was because I haven't seen Bladerunner..

I was thinking the same with all the product placement talk.

There were quite a lot of Bladerunner references...which I kinda expected as the opening shot of london on the titles has one extra building which looks like the Tyrell Corporation building from the film.

If it turns out that they truely are just tv show characters then I will be gutted but I think there is more to it...
