Mucky.Fingers Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 (Mods feel free to merge this with the MGS4 thread if necessary but I didn't feel that this really fit there) After just completing Metal Gear Solid 4, my first experience of a MGS game I'm going to go back and play the rest. As an owner of both a GC and PS I'm not sure which version is best? Obviously the Cube version has superior graphics, but what is the best version gameplay wise? Any major differences? Or just personal taste? All comments welcome
Guest Jordan Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 There are some massive differences between MGS and Twin Snakes. Mostly the fact you can do all the MGS2 stuff (hold up guards, hide in lockers, FPS shooting and so on). Some say that the cinematics are totally over the top and "super human". I say who gives a shit, it looks fucking bad ass. Not to mention MGS really hasn't held up in some places, it dated very badly. Thus my conclusion is Twin Snakes > MGS1

Guest Jordan Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 What Jordon said. Hate to be a c-c-c-combo breaker 'n all, but since when does my name have two o's in it? >.>
The Bard Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Twin Snakes plays better, but the new cut scenes are so, so (so) bad.
ShavenWolf Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 I wouldn't say that MGS has 'dated badly', as I played it for the first time a few months ago and it's still way more fun than many games released this gen. The graphics do look a bit ass though, especially when the characters are talking. It looks like they've got a nervous tic or something.
EchoDesiato Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Play the Twin Snakes. Don't listen to purist snobs that say otherwise.
Domstercool Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Play both instead. The soundtrack on Twin Snakes doesn't touch the original.
Daft Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Not to mention MGS really hasn't held up in some places, it dated very badly. I'd disagree with that completely. I played it fully for the first time a couple months ago and it easily holds its own.
Dyson Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 I've played them both and Twin Snakes is easily the most enjoyable.
Pit-Jr Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 PS1 3D graphics are a bit painful to endure, id go with the Twin Snakes version. As a bonus you get to shoot Mario and Yoshi with high powered weaponry
CoolFunkMan Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Play both instead. The soundtrack on Twin Snakes doesn't touch the original. Seconded(!), but I haven't played the original much tbh. Although, I agree that the gameplay is far superior in Twin Snakes, but the cutscenes are a bit over the top. I'd say if you want the proper nostalgic feel, then the original wins. If you want something a bit more up-to-date, go for Twin Snakes.
Domstercool Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 I'm going to be playing both in my MGS orgy fest soon. I want to see if I see things differently now I know the whole plot.
Cube Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 I've only seen a bit of MGS, but the encounter music is awesome. Overall, I'd say MSG:TTS. I loved the gameplay. The cutscenes were a tad long, though.

Thus my conclusion is Twin Snakes > MGS1 Can't agree more with above statement. I guess when Konami made Twin Snakes, they took the best bits of MGS1 and 2 and combined them with the story of 1 with added stuff as well making it a brilliant game.

Zechs Merquise Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Twin Snakes all the way. Amazing graphics, great cut scenes and the new gameplay elements were awesome.
The Bard Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 I still like the graphics on the PS1 version, the colour filter adds a pretty cool effect. They rerecorded all the voices for Twin Snakes, and Naomi sounds so bland and subdued, whereas she used to have a pretty strong accent. Liquid sounds even more annoying. The first person camera adds to the game in some places, and totally breaks it in others, as you have to remember, the original was made without first person shooting in mind. As for the cut scenes; Solid snake is not supposed to be a fucking super hero with Neo-like abilities, and the cut scenes totally break any sense of vulnerability. Fair enough if the ninja has mad acrobatic skills, but I always thought of Snake as a more realistic, human character, and Twin Snakes totally takes that concept and fucks it up the ass with a two foot cactus. MGS is all about the story, and TS moves it (even more) in the direction of pure farce. The original is still the "full" experience for MGS fans, but if you're not a fan of the series (I'm not really anymore) then I suppose TTS is yer best bet.
Domstercool Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Both Mei Ling and Naomi lost their accents in the remake.
Cube Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 One thing I really don't get is why the game keeps pointing out that the soldiers you fight are "supersoldiers" with highly advanced senses of vision and hearing when it's pretty obvious that they can only see 1m in front of then.
The Bard Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Well, that's more of a story crux than a gameplay one, I don't think there was any plausible way to pull off a stealth game back then without the enemies being limited in some way. Also, I suppose you could argue that the soldiers wouldn't be able to tell from a larger distance whether you're one of them or an intruder. I can't believe I'm defending Metal Gear.
flameboy Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Play both I say..MGS the original has aged really well and it does offer a totally different experience with its lack of 3D camera causing an experience I feel can be found in very few other places. I recently played it and plan on playing twin snakes once I get through all the rest.
Hellfire Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 I pretty much agree with Jordan, the original MGS is now unplayable because of the camera, I much prefer TS, even the cinematics, they're freaking awesome.
