So they definately don't matter as much as gameplay, but which game would you say has achieved the best graphics so far?

I really can't decide, but I suppose Gran Turismo 5 has the best i've seen so far.

/thread.

Agree.

What people have said so far is all I can remember.

It depends how you define graphical quality. In terms of raw techical power, Crysis obviously, for the best use of an engine I'd probably go for the likes of Half-Life 2. The latest EVE Online build is a simply remarkable visual achievment given it's relatively low specs, as is Mario Galaxy on the Wii. Games like Jet Set Radio, Team Fortress 2, Viewtiful Joe, Okami, Paper Mario and their like will probably withstand the test of time better then most thanks to their outstanding visual design, rather then their technical prowess.

For little details and lighting, Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway

And these are respectable on their own, but given the sheer, sheer scale (up to 2000 of these little guys, almost all different from one another, as well as everything else), Medieval II Total War:

And, if only because giant robot spiders with a death ray are awesome, Supreme Commander (the 360 version):

I've been so addicted to Medieval lately, finally got rid of those Spanish. Also love Supreme commander.

Edit: You know what, they should be a couple of years without making games, there's so much I haven't played and just as much that I would like to replay.

Got to agree with these. Whilst games like Gears of War look gorgeous at the time, the fact that they're aiming for realism on the current generation of consoles means they'll end up bettered eventually (and it's beginning to happen already).

Cel-shaded titles, especially Wind Waker, maintain their beautiful visual style and still manage to look amazing even today.

I'd say Metroid Prime 3 and Bioshock.

Gears of War and MGS4 win the "Best dullest graphics" award.

I rather agree. They're good examples of graphics that are technically proficcent but are hideously dull and uninterresting to look at. Gears of War and "realistic" war games in particular. Washed out browns and greys? We invented colour TV for this?

I'm going for Wind Waker, Okami, and Bioshock. Agree with Mario Galaxy as well. Definitely an art style overcoming the lack of power in the console.

I love love love Bioshock though. I want to play it again :)

Beautiful Katamari's graphics make me smile every time I play it - who needs amazingly detailed graphics when you can have the most insane type of fun ever?
