I'd hardly call it boring. Good read.

Not to you maybe, but considering I already know everything that's going to happen, getting through the introductory chapters can be quite tedious compared to writing the climax(es). Chapter five is quite long, but it should still be on time.

Phew, done! I just wanted to get this posted before I went to bed; I might fix up some of the wording tomorrow if I feel it's necessary. Enjoy!

Chapter 5

“It’s time.”

Strider turned to face Martinist, who was sprawled out on the floor beside him.

“I suppose you’ll want to come with me?”

Martinist sprung up, his attention caught by Strider’s question.

“Where are you going?”

The room fell silent.

“Strider? Where are you going?”

Strider inhaled as much air as possible.

“I’m going to catch BlackFox.”

In his own house, miles away, BlackFox waited patiently with his legs crossed. It wouldn’t be long, he thought, until they arrived.

Strider stepped onto the train he had been waiting for and carefully assessed his surroundings. He walked down the narrow carriages until he found one that was empty, except for a broken bottle left on top of one of the seats. Sitting down, he looked inside his bag, checking for the third time since his departure that he had everything he needed. After doing so, he looked around, confirming that no one else could hear him.

“Ok, it should be safe to talk now,” he said.

Martinist noted that Strider didn’t seem too pleased about that, but he wasn’t about to let it stop him speaking after being forced to be silent the entire journey to the station.

“So, you think BlackFox has a Death Note?”

Strider twitched at the mention of the notebook.

“I don’t know. I think so; he was acting suspicious, but there’s no concrete evidence. Still, he’s my only lead so far, so I might as well investigate.”

“Suspicious? You didn’t say anything about that before.”

“I wasn’t aware I had to report everything I found back to you.”

Martinist chuckled and shook his head.

“I found two things that BlackFox did to be… Strange. First of all, he offered accommodation to another forum member who happened to be on holiday near where he lived. By itself, this isn’t too peculiar, until you factor in that he posted his address in the actual thread, rather than sending it via a private message. That’s how I know where to go today. Secondly, he stated that he was interested in the forum meet-up, and posted his full name in the thread. I think he’s trying to bait another Death Note owner into going after him.”

“Oh?”

“Think about it; all he has to do is give a fake name in the meet-up thread, and he’d be safe. In doing so, he’s trying to trick someone with a Death Note into tracking him down, fooling them into thinking that all they need to kill him would be his face.”

“What’ll he achieve by doing that? You reckon he has the eyes?”

“No. If BlackFox really is a Death Note owner, then he’s definitely the one who removed the user image gallery, but if he’s smart, he’d have saved the images before deleting them. I myself have posted in that thread; if he had they death god eyes, he’d be able to tell I owned a Death Note, and there’s no way he’d have kept me alive if he knew that.”

“But couldn’t he be on your side? How do you know he wants to use the Death Note for evil purposes?”

“That’s simple; if he wanted to save lives, he’d have deleted the meet-up thread as well as the image gallery. That he kept one for himself and allowed the other to remain is proof enough that he doesn’t care who does dies and who doesn’t. As far as I’m concerned, that makes him evil.”

“I don’t get it then. What’s he going to do?”

The train started to slow down, and what was left of the broken bottle rolled off the seat and smashed onto the floor.

“I’m not sure, but I figure as long as I stay out of his view I’ll be safe. This is certainly going to be interesting.”

Death Note: How to Use

The conditions for death will not be realised unless it is physically possible for that human or it is reasonably assumed to be carried out by that human.

You can only specify a time of death a maximum of 23 days in advance.

Strider peered into the window of BlackFox’s house, being careful not to make himself visible. BlackFox was casually watching TV, unaware that his predator was watching over him, but still, he had a sense of alertness to him, as if he were waiting for something. Setting his bag down on the floor, Strider took out his Death Note and opened it, grabbing the pen that was clipped onto the cover. After a few moments of hesitation, he bcame frustrated with himself.

“I… I can’t do it. I can’t even bring myself to test if he was using a fake name. I-“

Interrupted by a knock at BlackFox’s door, Strider scurried to move into a position where he could see what was happening. A tall man was standing outside the house waiting for BlackFox to answer. As the door opened, Strider watched the man smile, stick his arms out, and hug BlackFox.

“James! How are you?” he said enthusiastically.

Something tweaked in Strider’s mind. James was the name BlackFox had used on N-E. Had he really posted his real name? If that were the case, then every assumption Strider had made was wrong. Or was this part of his plan?

“I don’t know what to do,” Strider grumbled. “Martinist do you-”

Twisting around, Strider didn’t even have time to flinch as a large wooden stick came crashing into his face.

Opening his eyes, Strider felt a searing pain in his left cheek. He was shrouded in darkness, with only a small strip of light finding its way into the room from the bottom of a door directly ahead of him. Raising his arms, he felt a heavy force holding him back; he was to be chained to the floor. The lights slowly flickered on, and the silhouette of a man he had never seen before emerged from the doorway. Stepping into the now bright room, the man bent forward and gripped his stomach, letting out a gentle snigger. Gradually, he began to stand up straight, and with every second that passed, his voice grew louder and more menacing, erupting into more of a scream than a laugh. He walked forward and positioned his face inches away from Strider’s.

“Hello.”

Death Note: How to Use

One page taken from the Death Note, or even a fragment of the page, contains the full effects of the note.

The instrument to write with can be anything, (e.g. cosmetics, blood, etc.) as long as it can write directly onto the note and remains as legible letters.

Strider was sweating heavily. Looking around, he couldn’t see Martinist anywhere. What the hell was going on?

“What, no greeting? How rude. You know, it took me a whole hour to properly prepare this room for you, and this is the thanks you give me?”

The man produced a scrunched up notebook, not a Death Note, from his back pocket, and opened it for Strider to see. Inside were dozens of pictures of N-E members, and next to every single image was the member’s username. Flipping through the book, the man came across Strider’s picture.

“Ah, here we are.” He took out a pen and wrote ‘Liam Bailey’ beside the picture. “You know, next time you go hunting Death Note owners, you really should consider leaving your driver’s license at home.”

Strider was flabbergasted.

“Wh… Why did you… How…”

The man leaned backwards and stretched out his arms, yawning.

“Let me guess; you thought BlackFox was trying to bait you into appearing before him, yes? In truth, you weren’t far off, but that’s irrelevant now. You must have seen his post revealing his name, but you were thinking about it all wrong. He didn’t post a fake name at all, in fact, he legitimately wanted to go to that meet-up. Using that name in combination with a picture he posted of himself in the user image gallery, I was able to manipulate him into sharing his address with the whole of N-E. I was one step ahead of you the entire time, Liam, and you fell right into my trap. To top it all of, BlackFox was a moderator, which would have fit perfectly into your theory. All I had to do was wait, and sooner or later, someone would show up investigating BlackFox, and using common sense, that person would be a Death Note owner. Of course, that logic isn’t entirely flawless, so I made sure I waited before I moved in, and just like I predicted, you opened up your Death Note right in front of me, providing the final proof I needed.”

Strider knew he was beaten. This was the end. If only he had been more careful, he might have survived.

“Stop wasting time! Hurry up and kill me!” he roared furiously at the man, who wasn’t surprised at his outburst at all.

“Eventually. For now though, I still have a use for you.”

Moria grinned, punched Strider square in the nose and picked up his notebook, disappointed that there were only two other Death Note owners left to kill.

Really nice! I'm curious to see how Zell and Moria will catch each other and how Supergrunch gets in this. Letty seems a bit helpless in the middle of this 2 evil masterminds.

Nice chapter! Strider's story ends here. Moria, you sly boots!

Strider's still alive though, he might be able to escape and kill Moria.

Great stuff, Owario. I've just caught up with the last 3 chapters as I missed it when I was away. Can't wait for the next chapter now.

Edit: To be honest, I kind of rushed this chapter. I'm debating whether or not to take it down and work on it some more.

Chapter 6

The meet-up was today. Of course, it was meant to last the entire weekend, but something told Supergrunch that it would be cut short. The day before, he had set up multiple cameras in the proposed meeting place to allow him to observe from afar. For now, that was all he could do, as anything else was far too dangerous. Stefkov wanted him to watch; he obviously wanted to show Supergrunch something, and that he had no idea what that thing was both scared and excited him tremendously. He flicked the deck of cards he was holding from one hand to the other, and stared at the screen, which was displaying a desk. Two hours ago, that desk was covered in the name tags of various members, but now only one remained.

Letty walked into the room and picked up her name tag. Realising that it would be far too risky to give her real name, she had posted a fake one in the thread, and now, with help from EchoDesiato, she was practically invincible to other Death Note owners. Looking around, Stefkov was nowhere to be seen. This was the final proof that he had been controlled, but that meant that anyone in the room could potentially be the controller.

“Letty? Hey!”

Goron_3 surfaced from a crowd of people and walked over to Letty. Was he the controller? Letty thought hard. She would have to act completely normal, no matter what happened. She had the advantage here, and she could not afford to forfeit it by making a mistake. She looked at his name tag.

“Anil, hi!”

“Come on, come over and join the rest of us. Socialising and all that.”

Letty smiled politely and followed Goron_3 towards everyone else. As they approached, a few faces turned, and at that moment, Letty lost her footing and stumbled clumsily to the ground. With a large thud, everyone else in the room was now staring at her.

She grinned to herself. Go ahead, she thought, look at me. You won’t be able to tell I have a Death Note, even if you do have the death god eyes.

EchoDesiato had told her about relinquishing the ownership of a Death Note; that when you do, your lifespan becomes visible again, and that you lose any memory of owning the notebook. It wasn’t too much trouble for her to get around; all she had to do was rip out a page and laminate the cover so that she could hold it without regaining ownership. She gave up possession of the Death Note, at which point EchoDesiato touched her with the ripped out page, allowing her to see him. He told her everything that had happened so far, and directed her to a note she had written, which verified everything he had said.

Go on everyone, she continued in her head, look at me. You won’t be able to do anything, because technically, I don’t own a Death Note!

Death Note: How to Use

You may also write the cause and/or details of the death prior to filling in the name of the individual. Be sure to insert the name in front of the written cause of death. You have about 19 days (according to the human calendar) in order to fill in a name.

An Individual with the eye power of a god of death can tell the name and life span of other humans by looking at that person’s face. By possessing the Death Note, an individual gains the ability to kill and stops being a victim. From this point, a person with the Death Note cannot see the life span of other Death Note owners, including him/herself. But, it is not really necessary for the individual to view the lifespan of him/herself nor other Death Note owners.

After a second or two of blank stares, Mundi bent down and offered his assistance.

“Thank you,” Letty said, pulling herself up with the help of Mundi’s arm.

“No problem. How are you? Where’s Jordan?”

Letty scanned the area. People were resuming their conversations.

“Oh, he was… busy. I’m fine, though.”

“That’s good to hear.”

Supergrunch bit his lip. Did something significant just happen? Something didn’t seem right, and he had a feeling that it had to do with Letty. He wrote her name down and continued to watch.

Only half concentrating on her conversation with Mundi, Letty felt safe in the knowledge that she could not be identified as a Death Note owner, and that she could calmly monitor everyone’s actions without anyone thinking twice about her.

All of a sudden, the room fell silent, leaving Letty to look around, perplexed. Then, as quickly as the conversations had stopped, everyone except for her raised their left hand at the exact same time.

“Wh-” Letty stopped herself before speaking aloud.

The arms dropped back down, and everyone carried on speaking, apparently unaware of what they had just done.

Something terrible had just happened, Letty knew it. Then it dawned on her.

“No…”

She was the only one who used a fake name. The controller must have written every single person’s name in their Death Note, and in the cause of death, specified them to all raise their hand at the same time. Using that, they could also raise their hand out of their own will, and no one would be able to tell the difference between them and everyone around them. While this was happening, they’d be watching everyone else, and taking note of who didn’t raise their hand. They would be able to tell who had a Death Note without being placed under any suspicion themselves whatsoever.

Letty desperately looked around, trying to spot someone looking at her. She made a fist, and punched the wall next to her.

“Shit!”

Genius twist.

I wouldn't even think of things like that. I guess that's why I am a bad writer/storyteller.

You may want to read the previous chapter(s) to refresh your memory.

Chapter 7

Supergrunch placed the Queen of Diamonds back into the deck of cards he was holding. “Letty†was written in bold text across the Queen’s body, but the image of the woman was still recognisable. On the monitor he was watching, the real Letty was breathing heavily, holding her head in her hands as a small crowd stood open-mouthed, staring.

“Which one,†Letty mumbled into her palms, “which one of you was it?â€

EchoDesiato was watching in disbelief. How could his plan have been one upped?

“WHICH ONE OF YOU SENTENCED ME TO MY DEATH?†Letty screamed at the gathered forum members. “AT LEAST HAVE THE DIGNITY TO OWN UP TO IT!â€

Enraged, she flung her arm outwards and pointed at Jamba.

“You! Was it you?â€

Jamba, startled, made no effort to address Letty’s question.

“SHOW YOURSELF!â€

“These outbursts are doing nothing to help you,†EchoDesiato calmly spoke into Letty’s ear. “Listen; there’s only one way out of this mess. You have to make the deal.â€

Letty slowly twisted her head with a crack to look EchoDesiato in the eyes.

“Chances are the person who did this doesn’t know your real name yet, otherwise you’d be dead already, but it won’t take them long to find out. I’m not allowed to tell you their name, but I can’t see their death god right now. You’ll be able to tell who they by using the eyes, and you might be able to kill them before they get to kill you.â€

Letty figured she didn’t have time to think about the decision.

“It’s either half my life,†she whispered with a gloomy tone, “or all of it.â€

EchoDesiato nodded.

“Do it.â€

“I can’t,†EchoDesiato told her apologetically.

“What?â€

“You have to own a Death Note in order to make the deal. Right now, because of my plan, you don’t. Sorry, it’s the rules.â€

Letty’s fist started to shake.

“Fine!â€

She threw open her jacket and grabbed her Death Note, ignoring the undying gazes from everyone in the room. She ripped off the laminated cover and took a firm grip on the notebook as her memories came flooding back to her. She smiled.

“EchoDesiato, give me the eyes!â€

The death god nodded again.

“My pleasure.â€

Death Note: How to Use

“Suicide†is a valid cause of death. Basically all humans are thought to possess the possibility to commit suicide. It is, therefore, not something “unbelievable to think ofâ€.

Whether the cause of the individual’s death is either a suicide or accident, if the death leads to the death of more than the intended, the person will simply die of a heart attack. This is to ensure that other lives are not influenced.

Letty scanned the face of everyone in the room, then double and triple checked them.

“Something’s wrong, I can see everyone’s lifespan.â€

“What you see is correct, Letty.â€

“What?â€

“I’m sorry, it was the only way.â€

“Then th-“

“Yes. You are the only Death Note owner in this room.â€

“But you sa-â€

“Having the death god eyes is a huge advantage Letty, but you wouldn’t have made the deal if I told you the other Death Note owner wasn’t in sight. Don’t think I was the one who wrote everyone in this room into a Death Note; a plan like that is beyond me, however, when I realised what was happening, I decided to take advantage of the situation. We are friends, you and I, but my main goal has always been to win the bet that I made, and to do that, you need to be as powerful as possible. You owning the eyes increases my chances of winning immensely. Besides, now the person who planned all of this won’t risk coming into your sight, so you don’t have to worry about being followed anywhere.â€

Supergrunch observed as Letty spouted insane ramblings to herself. She must have been what Stefkov wanted to show him, but how did he want him to react? Thinking to himself, Supergrunch recognised that he would have to investigate Letty further, but he had no idea what to look for. She appeared to be looking at something, speaking to something, but all that was in front of her was a wall. Something was definitely amiss, but schizophrenia didn’t solve any mysteries at all. Supergrunch continued to watch. Letty had seemed to disregard the presence of anyone else in the room, but that hadn’t put a stop to their silence. Realising the mistake she had made, Letty swiftly exited the room, and at the very moment where she passed through the door’s frame, Supergrunch stood up and began to run. He would have to follow her to allow his investigation to progress, whether Stefkov planned for him to do so or not.
