Following Sony's announcement of its new online community software, PS Home, Nintendo has gone on the offensive, deeming the service "an example of Sony's 'Mii-too' approach."

When asked of the company's thoughts on Sony's online plans, Nintendo told CVG: "This is an example of Sony's "Mii-too" approach. But as Mr. Miyamoto states, Nintendo years ago considered and rejected the type of approach Sony is now taking", presumably referring to creating a virtual online world.

Just in case you missed it, PS3 Home allows players to create their own character, like a 3D avatar, and take it into a realistic online virtual world to interact with PS3 gamers from around the globe.

Nintendo's equivalent avatar system, the Mii Channel, lets gamers make simple cartoon-style characters and save them onto the Wii's internal memory. These Miis can then be imported into games for gameplay, or sent to other Wii consoles via the internet.

Nintendo has clearly opted for a simpler approach - although some say the lack of customisation options make it a bit too basic.

But Nintendo is pleased with it's avatar system, saying: "Miis have become a cultural phenomenon in their own right, appealing well beyond the traditional core gamer audience, and the process of populating them across the Wii universe is just beginning."

3D avatars and real time interaction could become a huge aspect of gaming with the current generation of consoles. But will Microsoft join the party with their own PS3 Home or Mii equivalent?

Xbox Live subscribers have been interacting with each other since the online gaming service launched almost five years ago. Have Sony and Nintendo seen the success the platform achieved and now want a piece of the action?

We're speaking to some very important people at Microsoft later today at GDC and we'll put it to them.

The two approaches are similar, but Nintendo's is much simpler. Sony's expands on the Avatar idea, and its a nice to see the technology can do such complex things but ultimately Nintendo's characatures are far more charming.

Though I find Nintendo's Mii channel far more charming, Sony's Home looks pretty damn cool. I want a Mii channel that retains the simple Mii look but has all of Home's features.

The Home thing sounds pretty cool, but the screenshots are so dull and lifeless. There's no charm at all. It looks like an even worse version of Second Life.

What I would love would be a 'Mii lounge' where you could walk around and chat with other Mii's online. When your friend was in a game, you wouldn't be able to contact him because he would be away in a 'game room'. However if you did want to chat with him you would knock on the door.

Fuck you Nintendo.

I object:shakehead :shakehead

I do too.

All they're saying is that Sony never come up with anything themselves, in that you create yourself as a character on the console itself (Rather than the Sims type of character and such).

The Mii idea isn't original either, and Nintendo arent saying it is, but having them as your console self is.

I just don't see anything in psh thats as good as the thing known as the internet. All the "additions" can be done much better using a browser.

psh just seems like a kiddy version of the internet in a shiny shell.

Like I said in another thread I was not impressed, some aspects in PS home simply don't blend well to my eyes, and some other stuff I disliked for being clearly aimed at teenagers "look we are so cool" kind of approach, seemed gimmick.

Realistic faces are not half bad, but I wouldn't want to get rid of oversimplified Mii's, it'd be nice if each face could have two representations though, a realistic one and a cartoony one. best of two worlds.

I certainly don't require a channel like that, but the community aspect was cool in some aspects.

Mii's lack customization options and Wii's online aproach lacks "conectivity" or rather... relationships. So yeah, they also need to improve, but we already knew that before pshome.

Sorry Ninty but i disagree. Sony's 'Home' looks fantastic and i'm very much looking forward to it.

I always thought Nintendo were going to do a online system like Animal Crossing but you use your 'mii' characters instead.

There's no denying Sony have been inspired by Mii's. But the concept of an online avatar was never Nintendo's idea in the first place. I'm actually quite angry that Nintendo see fit to denouce Sony even they have done the EXACT same thing. All Sony have done is taken it a lot futher and made it look a lot better.

Yes, the PSHome characters looks as bad and lifeless as Everquest NPC, but its the concept that makes it interesting. Its a really nice idea to apply with Miis but as always Nintendo fails to realize that and paternises its costumers. I'm getting sick of their attitude, the industry is more than boasting ones hardware sales, and as a gamer I really don't care. Why not do everything possible to have every kind of gamers instead of doing whatever Nintendo is doing right now.

Because its an expense, something that makes Nintendo cringe

Yeah, and Sony never patronise consumers or boast shipped figures.:indeed:

Thats not the point. I'm a Nintendo fan so that pisses me more than the stuff Sony does to its costumers.
