As you've no doubt read this morning, Manhunt 2 has been rejected by the BBFC - meaning that no one outside of Rockstar will ever play the game. Except, that is, our magazine comrades at NGamer, who bagged the world's first review of the Wii and PS2 splatterfest.

The highly positive review, which awarded Manhunt 2 a score of 92%, appears in the latest issue of NGamer, out tomorrow. So we've scoured it for some key excerpts that might explain why the BBFC has been left feeling sickly over Rockstar's sequel.

The violence

NGamer says:

"The astonishing level of brutality is an integral part of the experience..."

"[Manhunt combines] the tense stealth elements of Splinter Cell with the crowd-pleasing fatalities of Mortal Kombat, wrapped up in a story that's a little bit of Second Sight, a little bit of Hostel and a whole lot of unsettling..."

"Manhunt 2 is a unique treat for adult gamers with strong stomachs..."

"We've deliberately avoided talking about the game's more grisly excesses because these things are best discovered for yourself..."

"Once [an execution] is over, you can drag the remains - at least, the bits you can clear up without a shovel and mop - into the shadows..."

The controls

NGamer says:

"The motion controls put you in Daniel's shoes in a way that simply holding a releasing a button cannot..."

"Each execution has several stages, activated by a chopping motion, or a prod, or a slam to the floor, or a sawing movement..."

"Executions are much more physical with the Wii controls, and we found we felt more immersed in the game world thanks to them..."

The locations

NGamer says:

"The journey to the Project's labs takes in some truly rancid locations..."

"... a torture dungeon beneath a fetishists' nightclub and a porn theatre in which you fight while an adult movie plays on the big screen..."

The impact

NGamer says:

"A lot of people are going to be offended by it, for its copious violence and occasional sex scene..."

"Somebody, somewhere is going to get a shock when they walk in on a friend laterally bisecting a hunter's head with realistic sawing motions..."

"Manhunt 2 is what Wii's parental controls are for..."

"In its own bloody way, it's an example of the '30 seconds of fun' gaming ethos popularised by Bungie's Halo, slowed down and stretched out into stealth and horror..."

"... a torture dungeon beneath a fetishists' nightclub and a porn theatre in which you fight while an adult movie plays on the big screen..."

Well now we know where the sex scenes are in the game - must have got the BBFC hot under the collar - the BBFC dont seem to get you can have Console games specifically aimed at adults - I know there trying to protect kids but thats the shops job they shouldn't sell to minors. The BBFC should just concentrate on rating games not banning them.:(

The Irish system usually never bans anything. I'm getting it and i'm going to encourage everyone to get.

MANHUNT 2 VIDEO GAME PROHIBITED

A prohibition order has been made by IFCO in relation to the video game Manhunt 2. The Order was made on 18th June 2007 under Sec 7 (1) (b) of the Video Recordings Act 1989 which refers to ‘acts of gross violence or cruelty (including mutilation and torture)’.

IFCO recognizes that in certain films, DVDs and video games, strong graphic violence may be a justifiable element within the overall context of the work. However, in the case of Manhunt 2, IFCO believes that there is no such context, and the level of gross, unrelenting and gratuitous violence is unacceptable. :

Half of you little boys and girls shouldn't be allowed to play Manhunt 2 anyway. Maybe if not so many of you did play these games so young Manhunt 2 might of got a rating.

*Hides the fact I played PD when I was little and Turok 2 when I was even younger.*

EDIT: God those graphics are awful.

EDIT 2: Wouldn't it be funny if this gained the Wii so much bad press the sales totally flopped and never recovered.

It would be ironic, Nintendo fans complain no mature games come to Nintendo consoles. Mature game comes to console. Mature game gets banned. Wii sales flop and never recover.

Not that that would happen. But you'd have to laugh right?

The effect will probably be the opposite.

I was looking forward to this game, thought it would be interesting in a gruesome way. I can't see why an 18 rating isn't efficient. I blame it on parents buying games for their kids and poor sales assistants who don't stick to the law.

haha, i never really considered buying this game, but now i'm thinking of importing it just to "stick it to The Man"

You don't have to thank me::shrug:

But yeh I agree, like prohibition in the 1920 America, ironically it may have and adverse effect on the popularity and desire to play the game.

Im actually genuinely surprised this is banned. Not that I would want to buy it myself but thats beside the point. The fact that people who would want this game are not allowed to I feel is ludicrous. Especially seeing the amount of films with similar content that are allowed to be purchased.

I believe this is a real blow to the Wii's mature market, a real blow!

On the other hand some may argue that the Wii's family friendly image has not been tarnished by this game, as a lot of parents obviously consider buying a Wii for this reason.

Nonetheless, Rockstar must be fuming right now, quite rightly.

It bollocks tho if anything the Wii is the best equipped of all the three consoles to deal with stopping under aged people playing it as it has parental controls.

The Wii is marketed as console for everyone, its other people that think it is a kids only console, idiots...

Of course you and I know thats true. But to the Gaming ignorant parent demographic a game which has a lot of bad press for being violent, sadistic and peverse is going to make them think twice about buying the Wii for little Martin.

I you ask me Nintendo hasn't really marketed it Parental Controls like a company such as AOL has, which is to their detriment. Something to improve for the future as more mature titles are released.

Well it says it whenever you upgrade (for whatever reason it does but hey ho) so I'd imagine most people would have seen it at least once. But I agree, they don't have a Connie. Who doesn't love Connie?

yeah but then does your casual owner of a Wii have it connected using Wifi?

I think they should make an advert about it much like they have for the news channel, weather channel, photo channel etc...

Right. I'm 28 and (hopefully) anb to distinguish between right and wrong. According to the European Distributors, its wrong for me to import games.

According to the BBFC, it's perfectly fine to import Manhunt 2.

This has to be a first, PAL consumers importing form PAL regions?

My first was a DBZ game,I got it from France when it was delayed in the UK by a week...

Also I want this a lot more and i'm really considering getting this to stick it to them aswell.

Since it's been banned,I kinda want it more now...

Actually, both the PS3 and 360 have parental controls as well. Obviously the fact you didn't know speaks volumes as to how often anyone uses them, though.
