Super Castlevania (VC) READ BEFORE DOWNLOAD!

So, this just popped up on the service. Been waiting ages. However like many of you I can't afford the luxury of a 'classic controller' and so have been using my mote and GC controller for my downloads. So, I check what's compatible with Castlevania. To my luck GC controller is listed, awesome. I download, boot up. Everythings fine, I enter the first level. Just as I remember apart from one key aspect, why is our beloved vampire slayers' special attack mapped to the same button as jump. Now, at first I thought I was being stupid and it was always like this. As the level progressed I realised this could not have been the case as it's fucking stupid. Now, what kind of dumbass schoolboy error is that. Not only is it false advertising by saying it's compatible with the GC controller, it's also a really REALLY pathetically bad mistake on whoever tests these games. Did they honestly think it'd be ok like that? In fact, did they even play it. Or did they just type in a load of random buttons when mapping and hope for the best. Maybe they could be forgiven if the game used say 6-7 buttons. So how many does it use you're wondering, it must be over 5 for them to make such a mistake. Well, you'd be wrong. It actually uses... 3. 3. Fucking. Buttons. Seriously how in holy buggery can you fuck up mapping 3 buttons. Is there a monkey on the other end of this VC service.

Now I refuse to be conned into shelling out £15 for a controller i'll hardly use. So is there any solution to this problem? Sorry for the rant but I was toying with this or Sim City and considering I now have a game I can't play i'm a bit pissed.

EDIT: Ok people. If you want to play on the GC controller you have to assign you're own buttons in the options because it decides to map the buttons itself in an incredibly random way. Think of this if you do go using the GC controller for SNES games :heh:

Well here's hoping they release a lil update for it. I don't care cos the Classic Controller is absolutely awesome and is the best way of playing 2D games on Wii in my mind.

Thanks for the heads up Viper. That does sound like a horrific mapping on GC pad.

BTW I DL'd donkey kong country and I don't like the key mapping on GC. It's so clumsy as the big A button is used for switching the kongs while you have to hit all the little ones around it for main controls...!! How absurd!! So I'll be buying the classic pad... yeah I know it's annoying but I reckon it won't just be DK country and Super Castlevania that will have dodgy mapping.

..That does sound pretty screwed up :hmm:

..has anyone downloaded Super Probotector/ Contra III yet? I'm considering downloading that game in the morning/ afternoon (whenever I decide to get up...)

Yeah I heard about the weird button mapping too for the GC controller. It sounds horrible! Now Im holding off on my SNES purchases. I was really looking forward to Contra 3 (Probotector 3), maybe I should go for R-Type first...

Hopefully Nintendo realizes this problem and fixes it, letting the player decide would have been much better you know. So in fact, it means playing NES, MegaDrive and TurboGraphix games can be played with Wiimote, though MD games can get odd with A acting as the 3rd button), for SNES you NEED the Classic Controller and for N64 you use the GC controller. And why cant GC games be played with the Classic controller?

I do plan on playing a Classic controller, so that's not the problem. It just seems like such a big oversight or maybe an evil plan for Nintendo to make us buy the Classic controller!

Oh Viper, isn't possible in Castlevania 4 and many other games for that matter to change the buttons in the options menu? You should give that a try

Haha, that made me roffle. Man I laugh at the stupidest things...

Anyway I bought this, and I haven't played it...but I do have a classic controller...I wonder if it'll have the same problem...

probotector wasn't up :(

I was mightily pissed at that.

R-Type made my day though :).

Should've seen my reaction it probably would've been funnier. Think angry nintendo nerd style.

It's a good idea and I shall try it now in fact.

Case closed.

I wasn't aware SNES and Megadrive games even allowed for button mapping back then. Most I played didn't apart from Street fighter 2. But it goes without saying this could still be an issue in future games where manual button mapping isn't an option. What if they do this and we can't change it, we'd be proper fucked.

I said the same thing but if your planning on buying alot of VC games in the future, the Classic controller is worth it. Its cheap, its pseudo-wireless, and suprisingly comfortable.

Sure its a con, but what else would you expect from Nintendo. Might as well bend over and take it one more time

Maybe in the distant future when I have some actual money, I may consider it. Until then i'll have to put up with dodgy button mapping :(

Oh, ViPey. You are a big silly.

Question: If you could do this with this game, could you re-map the controls differently on DKC?

You'd think Nintendo would have used their goddamn heads and allowed you customly map buttons for VC titles through the Wii itself somehow, and save the configuration as part of the VC save's save. Seriously Nintendo, you're f***ing idiots.

Ahh, I have the original! This game is a must have, although it was a first generation SNES game I don;t think it was ever matched really. The Mode 7 was amazing, on the VC can you save your progress rather than having to write down all the passwords?

It makes you wonder if Nintendo have even seen or used an illegal emulator, most of which are far more robust and user friendly than Nintendos own pay service.

Nintendo has a real opportunity here to curb piracy and make a fortune at the same time. Its a shame they dont study their enemy more.

I also was gutted that Super Probotector was not available, but I downloaded R-Type instead.

I forgot how hard R-Type is, compared to more recent games. Or maybe I'm just rubbish at shoot em ups.

There was a shoot em up i had on the SNES years ago, and I cannot remember the name of it. It was a vertical shooter and the background used to roll like a big ripple as you flew your spaceship over it. I've been racking my brains trying to remember the name, anyway whatever it is I hope they release it on VC in the future.

EDIT - I just remembered what it was....

it was Super Aleste, the game used mode 7 and was a classic in my books.

I d/l'ed Castlevania and tried it with the GC pad and the the buttons seemed fine, jump and special weapon were on different buttons.

But what i couldn't figure out is how do you change the mapping of the buttons yourself?

That's incredibly bizarre. I rebooted my copy several times, it consistently had button mapping issues. You can change the buttons in the Options from the Title Screen. Wierd thing is when I looked at my options no two buttons were the same so i'm not quite sure what its problem was. Probably just wanted to piss me off.

reading the first post (withought the edit) it sounds like viper could be the next angry nintendo nerd.

Haha well the guy is a legend I can't match his standards.

Super Aleste is stupidly hard, I own it and can never get very far on it.

I just tried with DKC, and I can't find Options anywhere. So, for now Im stuck with awkward mapping (B, Y, X as main buttons:shakehead). Also, at the start it actually says "You will need a classic controller". I ram buttons at the start to get past credits etc so I hadnt read it properly before :p

This is weird because in VC shop GC pad logo is there alongside classic controller logo...

That sounded so logical, I found myself vigorously nodding at first. Then I thought, actually probably won't make that much difference to retro gaming piracy :hehe:

Nintendo should include a wii-side Gamecube controller re-mapping application. Something you could simply switch the functions of A, B, X, Y and Z around with - so you can do it for games that don't have it in the options. It should be easy enough, and you could save different configs for different games. It's a hassle, but they're obviously idiots/lazy sometimes.

Exactly the same with DKC, the SNES A button is the GC A button, the SNES Y Button is the GC Y Button etc.

Messes up SNES to the max.

Thank god for classic controller, curse Nintendo for bad mapping and an evil plan to sell more classic controllers.

..one is not at all pleased..

..and why is it called Super ProboTernimatorCop instead of Contra III ?

Because for some reason for the PAL release Konami decided to replace the burly men you control with fucking robots. Which is video game blasphemy, especially considering Contra 3 (I refuse to call it Probotector) is one of the best games on the Snes.
