  1. My day went really well - first, Clannad arrived, way earlier than I expected, and then I went into Cambridge, got a load of t-shirts I ordered from Threadless ages ago, then met up with the guy in charge of Linguistics who turned out to be a bit of a legend. It seems I can do linguistics next year, which is awesome, and when I mentioned I liked Japanese phonology, he went to his shelf and pulled out a book on it and lent it to me. It's great, it has an entire chapter on the velar nasal. I then went and bought some cool things.
  2. I watched episode one raw... given I dislike shounen, that was pretty impressive. I may continue to watch it.
  3. God knows, which is why I didn't. You'll find out soon enough.
  4. Firstly: Stop arguing so viciously about subs vs. dubs, you know the only real way to watch anime is raw. By Oxigen's argument at least (which I somewhat agree with), understanding the original language is infinitely superior to anything else. Subs are a better approximation of the original than dubs, but they're still an approximation. This doesn't stop dubs being worthwhile, though I tend not to like them. (yes, I do test the dubs on my dvds, but haven't liked any) Both subs and dubs are cool if you don't know Japanese, and I recommend subs... after all, it's what I use most of the time. If you ask me (and I am a fan of the genre), School Days was very gripping, but ultimately the characters were all such utter bastards that I almost couldn't watch it. The ending is nevertheless interesting, though over the top. Watch CLANNAD series 2 when it comes out for an example of an extremely good visual novel ending.
  5. I look forward to playing this blank cards thing... I intend to get metaphysical.
  6. I believe we have solutions to both problems, which just need to be implemented.
  7. Guys, shut up about dynastygal or I'll get deletey. This is a thread for purchases, not arguments.
  8. It's more about the target audience - anything aimed at boys is described as Shounen. Or Shounen magazine, or something else entirely. Not really, it just means there'll be a lot of what boys tend to like - fighting, cool characters etc. Basically shows are aimed at different target audiences: Kodomo - little kids, e.g. Doraemon, Hamtaro, etc. Shounen - boys, e.g. Naruto, Dragonball Z, Mecha anime, etc. Seinen - older guys and young adults, e.g. Death Note, Elfen Lied, Boogiepop Phantom, etc. Shoujo - girls, e.g. Marimite, Fushigi Yugi, etc. Josei - adult women, e.g. Honey and Clover (very little Josei is subbed) Stuff for fat greasy otaku - no name as such, but my favourite genre , e.g. Kanon, CLANNAD, Higurashi no naku koro ni, etc. Some (or possibly all) of this comes under Seinen also. Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli stuff - children - e.g. Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies, etc. Note that Miyazaki claims his films are not anime. Anyway, thats about all I can think of. Just because you don't fit the target audience of a show doesn't mean watching it isn't worth your while.
  9. Microcausm -> Microcosm. I'm afraid I cant offer anything more useful than that.
  10. Man, I just lost a fleet thanks to the crappy software... it was supposed to retreat, the thing crashed, and when I refreshed it had disbanded. Otherwise, this game is indeed awesome. Edit: Hmm, seems it was working okay, and my fleet just got pwned. Ah well.
  11. Yep, taberu (食べる) is to eat, and on it's own it's a casual way of saying "eat" (varies with context).
  12. From the name, I'd imagine it's a romantic comedy, possibly a crappy one. Mischievous kiss?
  13. Actually, I did go to a school where I'm pretty sure they'd have expelled someone who did that. But that school was insane, they thought it was still the 50s. Incidentally, a guy at my dad's school actually did get expelling for calling a teacher a **** (c-word). My dad says it was probably justified.
  14. Coolness, do I see a Kyou avatar? That makes us Clannad avatar buddies.
  15. Happy birthday Dante! Man, so many birthdays at the moment.
  16. I have seen Lucky Star, was good, though not as good as Azumanga Daioh. As for CGI, it depends how well it's integrated. It can look rubbish and out of place, but to see it being used to magnificent effect, look at the Makoto Shinkai opening to the first ef game. Clannad series one technically finished at episode 22, but episode 23 was a bonus one, with a bit of extra stuff. There'll be a similar episode on the last DVD when that comes out, and then season 2 (after story) will be out sometime in the unknown future. And it'll be good.
  17. I've seen various Black Lagoon episodes and can't say I've liked any of them. Anyway: Azumanga Daioh is great, but takes a little getting used to, and like others have said, the first episode isn't as good as the later ones. I like it mostly for its bizarre atmosphere.
  18. A little bit here this morning, and a little more later on. None settling of course.
  19. Right, well English GSCE is relatively quick to revise for - just look over set texts and maybe think about themes. As for biology, you'll have a lot to learn, but that's all you've got to do - learn it. Anyway, I've been doing even more thermodynamics. Anyone who did Chemistry past GCSE will know and love those equilibrium constants... well, it turns out that the maths to derive them is actually really cool. And it also explains why you often leave out water.
  20. Happy birthday Jordan! Let's just hope you don't get an ipod...
  21. Well it'll come when KyoAni make it - they have that, FMP and Clannad after story to do. Apparently after story, then Haruhi 2, then FMP is most liekly, but there's also a possibility of Haruhi coming first.
  22. From now on, Greg is a mass noun. "I put a load of Greg on the scales, and the dial read 3 tonnes."
  23. My dad put a £10 through the wash a while back, it just came out with very faded edges. The bank were happy to exchange it, I think they'll exchange most notes provided the two serial numbers (one on the bottom, one on the side I think) are still present.
