3DS and Wii U eShop purchases to end March 2023
Jonnas replied to Helmsly's topic in Nintendo Gaming
Didn't know either, going into it. All of the videoclips I'd seen were of battles, and none of the reviews mentioned the dungeon-crawling aspect (understandable, as the combat is the biggest highlight, really) Not yet. That's one I first heard about from browsing deals, as it looked like a nice beat'em up. I found very few reviews, but they seemed to think the game was fine. Not outstanding, but no significant flaws, either. I liked the aesthetics, though, and at that price it's easy to purchase. ...I literally bought this full price a couple of weeks ago -

Goddammit, of course this would happen just after I plunged into a bunch of full-priced purchases GADDAMMNIT Fine, I'll take the deal. 3DS version has easy stylus control, and the second screen allows you to check the map at all times while exploring. The latter aspect is something I found particularly important, because I otherwise strongly dislike first-person dungeon crawlers. Severed is excellent despite technically belonging to that genre. Another advantage of the 3DS version: super cheap right now -
The new anime and manga thread! [Use Spoiler Tags!]
Jonnas replied to Shorty's topic in General Chit Chat
I am quite happy with the Attack on Titan adaptation so far! I can see now why they didn't end the previous season with Jamil's scene. And rewatching these final moments as a Manga reader helps connect things into place. I usually like to single out particular scenes that I feel exceeded the manga. Obvious answer is the incredible ending of "Episode 1", but I have to give a shout-out to a particular goblin face in Episode 2 that... I'm not sure if it was in the manga or not, but the anime version will certainly brand it into my mind. Come Fall 2023, we're going to see how much of the Internet breaks over AOT. -
This... definitely looks like an original experience you can only get on the Switch.

Cube Tries to Play (Almost) Every Sonic Game
Jonnas replied to Cube's topic in General Gaming Discussion
Despite the Sonic 1 assets, they went with the Sonic 3 sprite. A smidge jarring, but it was probably easier to convert into golfing stances and animations. Having no idea about the majority of these little games you're showing us, I'm very thankful to read about them. I'm dumbfounded to see how much stuff Sega was outputting and outsourcing around this time. -
Tales of Symphonia Remastered (Switch, PS4, Xbox - 2023)
Jonnas replied to Hero-of-Time's topic in Nintendo Gaming
Man, that takes me back! I remember reading this info online back then. (Not this exact post, but the general gist of it. Also, the info being reported by JP-only players) So, just some quick amendments: In the GC version, the skits were not voiced in either language. They added voicelines for skits in the PS2 and further JP versions. No English version has ever seen these skits voiced; EEVIL is likely thinking of Symphonia 2, a different game in which the skits were indeed voiced in both languages, for all versions. I have never heard of this extra endgame dungeon before. I did hear about some extra floors for Niflheim (a bonus endgame dungeon that already existed in the GC version), so that might be what they're talking about; The sidequests/scenes they're talking about are relatively quick, are akin to skits when it comes to story/writing, and the new ones likely lead towards the added PS2 content. Just saying, for those who haven't played Symphonia, that's what the post's talking about; I don't thing they ever fetched the original ENG voice actors to voice lines for the new Artes. So they'll voice generic things like "Take this!" or "Behold!" when they do them. Not a significant flaw or anything, it's just something that amuses me So yeah. A shame they apparently removed the Gold Dragon bug, it was a funny oversight. -

Just the manga. I'm not even sure what was the thing that got people angry anymore. I know that the one part that bothered me won't get cut. The author definitely confirmed that it's meant to happen, and I can only hope it's handled with a different tone. -
Cube Tries to Play (Almost) Every Sonic Game

I recall that one common complaint regarding the X360/PS3 versions of the game was the required medal-hunting through towns to unlock later stages. Seeing as that structure is different in the PS2/Wii versions (medals are won via challenges or just in the temples), did you feel this system was a less obnoxious way to handle things? Or was it largely indifferent? -
Sea of Stars - A retro-inspired turn-based RPG (29/08/2023)

Yeah, I was talking about that short opening on the mountain pass. Felt like a beginner's dungeon to me. -
Sea of Stars - A retro-inspired turn-based RPG (29/08/2023)
Jonnas replied to darksnowman's topic in Nintendo Gaming
I played a chunk of the demo last night, and I liked what I saw. Great spritework, engaging battle system, memorable character design, and ambitious dungeons. Definitely has a lot of potential. My main criticism is that it's a bit hard to orient yourself in said dungeons. The scenery should be clear enough for the player to traverse, but it's not always obvious which places you can hop into and which ones you can't. When you add that dungeon tiles move around and have perspective and altitudes and shit, it can get very disorienting. It's fine for simple dungeons, but I can see it becoming a nightmare in anything more complex. Golden Sun often got around this by making every gap the exact same width, and each platforming tile the exact same size. In the demo, two different dungeons seemed to have two different rules for navigation, and that's not a good thing. I figure Sea of Star could get around this by highlighting hoppable edges with a specific colour or shine. Doesn't even need to be the same colour all the time, they could do a bright yellow edge for dark surfaces, and a dark purple one for brighter environments. Another criticism I have is regarding turn order. Some enemies show they're about to attack, others don't. Sometimes it's the same enemy, first time they attacked, I was warned, but not the second time. The player never has any idea when it's the playable characters' turn either. Maybe they don't want to copy FFX, that's fine, but they gotta find a system that's more consistent. If they can get around these issues, I think we have a GOTY contender on our hands. Well, as far as any Indie game can be considered a GOTY -
Meanwhile, everytime I hear him speak (in videos, I don't own the game), Berkut is all I hear A blissfully innocent and unburdened version of him Hector is Patrick Seitz. He also plays Jeritza from Three Houses/Hopes. I recall you compared that character's voice to an Anime dub at the time, which shows how prolific he is. So this one is interesting. These two voice actors sound nigh-identical, and that's what you picked up on. I first heard Justin Briner (Clanne) in FF7 Abridged before, and also thought it was the same guy. I wonder if the casting agency gets them confused as well

3DS and Wii U eShop purchases to end March 2023
Jonnas replied to Helmsly's topic in Nintendo Gaming
I think I'm officially done with purchasing what I wanted from the 3DS eShop. Which means that in the past year, I got: Physical Games Fire Emblem Fates (+DLC, including the other routes); Mario&Luigi: Dream Team Mario&Luigi: Paper Jam; Dillon's Dead Heat Breakers; Kid Icarus Uprising; Dragon Quest VIII VC Titles Wario Land 3; DK Land Trilogy; Kirby's Dream Land 2; Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon; Mega Man V; Defenders of Oasis; Crystal Warriors; Shining Force: Sword of Hajya Other Digital Titles Stella Glow; Virtue's Last Reward Theathrythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call (+20€ worth of DLC); Aero Porter; Fallblox; Mighty Flip Champs; Mighty Milky Way; Ninja Battle Heroes; SADAME; Resident Evil Mercenaries 3D; Shin Megami Tensei IV; Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse; SMT: Soul Hackers; SMT: Devil Survivor 2; Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove Stuff I thought I was gonna get, but didn't Dillon's Rolling Western (Sorry, @Glen-i. Tried a bit of Dead Heat Breakers, and the gameplay didn't do much for me) SMT Strange Journey Redux (I bought enough SMT to last for years. This one looked to be the most dungeon-crawly, so skipped) SMT Devil Survivor 1 (See above. Also, this one was unreasonably expensive, on top of me already having the sequel) Dr.Mario Miracle Cure (After purchasing several puzzle titles, I looked at this one and said "likely not worth it") The DLC for SMTIV:Apocalypse and Radiant Historia (After spending so much money at once, it's easy to cut minor DLC from the list) So yeah, how did your own hoarding backlogging year go? -
The Tweet says "current and future" titles, and I don't think that includes "discontinued" series 😈 (I kid, of course, just couldn't resist) (Also, lol on the Eurogamer typo)

So, did anybody see what is likely the best reaction to this game? (Turn on subtitles) Now that's a super fan. They have a reaction to Metroid Dread, too.

Tales of Symphonia Remastered (Switch, PS4, Xbox - 2023)
Jonnas replied to Hero-of-Time's topic in Nintendo Gaming
Jesus, it's the first time I'm hearing about that new screen transition to battle. What the actual hell? They took a good-looking smooth transition and turned it into something that makes this look like it was made in RPG maker. And it hurts the eyes, to boot. Not sure why that little detail got to me so much, but goddamn, it did. -
Real life events have drastically reduced my gaming time. Not sure what kind of gaming resolution I'd like to make for 2023, honestly, beyond "buy very few games". Ok, I have one: there are 2023 games I'm excited about. If I do buy them, I'll play them. Maybe I can get my rhythm back if I commit to that.

I'd say it's fine to start with either one. Though I do think OoA has a more straightforward type of progression anyway, might be easier to get into. -

Joke's on them! I already bought the GB titles I wanted ... -
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!! Ok, so. We did get a rerelease of the best Fire Emblem AND of the best Wario Land. I really can't complain. Only one point completely wrong. Pretty good prediction, if I say so myself! Baten Kaitos Collection makes me really happy. It's so great to see some quirky classics resurface; Advance Wars resurfaces! What an unbelievably bumpy road; The datamine for Fire Emblem Engage was right on the money. Hector looks more baby-faced than I'd like, but Soren and Veronica look excellent; GHOST TRICK!!!!!!!111!!!!1!! Pikmin 4 looks lovely. Not sure I like the dog, but I do love the Ice Pikmin; Layton returns! Respect; There were two detective games with RPG battles, and I don't think I'm feeling the genre fusion; I REPEAT! GHOST TRICK!!11!! GB and GBA games on the NSO was superb. Finally, a good reason to subscribe to the service; Metroid Prime shadow dropped? Mo'like mah jaw-dropped, amirite? Great to see one of the best games ever, returning in good form like this; Tears of the Mononoke Kingdom be looking great. I actually like Ganondorf's voice, it matches the various gruff, evil laughs we heard from him throughout the decades. So yeah, I really liked this direct. Packed to the brim with a lot of exciting content for me personally, and also not for me personally! EDIT: In the middle of all this excitement, I even forgot something that's also exciting: We Love Katamari

Baten Kaitos I&II HD Remaster (14th September 2023)
Jonnas replied to Julius's topic in Nintendo Gaming
I am so happy right now. Baten Kaitos Origins finally comes to Europe! I've been itching to replay the original game for a while now too, this is such a treat! Regarding QoL changes, I only ask that missable cards are made easier to get or recoup in some form. BK was particularly obnoxious about that. God, I remember a playthrough I did where I was carefully trying to collect all cards, and then I ended up missing some anyway because a character left the party temporarily, and when they came back, a few cards from their deck had evolved twice, which means the middle stages were permanently blank in the Collection. Infuriating. -
That cover is beautiful. So nostalgic. The trailer itself as well. All these years later, and I still recognize the attacking animation from those Space Pirates. The most significant change I noticed was the lighting and colours/contrast. There was a different "feel" to several rooms and cutscenes (like how some formerly dark blue enemies look so much brighter in the remaster). Other than that, everything looked pristine and accurate. You're in for a treat!

Nintendo Switch Online: Game Boy / Game Boy Color
Jonnas replied to Julius's topic in Nintendo Gaming
Well, well, well... You finally convinced me, Nintendo. This will surely convince me to get the subscription... as soon as I find time to game When I do, I'm interested in Alone in the Dark and Kirby. I'm also very happy with Wario Land 3 getting priority, impeccable game. Pokémon TCG was also a cracking surprise, it's such a good one. Finally, they're going to add best Fire Emblem for a wider audience to play, so I'm very happy with this initial roster. -
I'm afraid I'm lost on this sentence. I get that the CMA has found the acquisition to be harmful and borderline monopolistic... But what does this part I quoted actually mean?
