Quick question for lucky PAL Wii owners - has anyone out there tested the 480p mode with component cables? Do the PAL games indeed run in progressive scan?

That's serious. Was it even one of the official cables?

Guinness is my achille's heel, I live on the stuff. Don't like the price of drink in the free state though, it's far too expensive in places - €4.80?! Jesus Christ the night. A pint of the black goes for about £2.50 in Belfast, which is at the most about €3.70! What do you think of the North Star brew? It's different alright - slightly sweeter and lighter. All tastes the same after 7 pints of the usual stuff though haha they haven't even brought the Brewhouse Series up north yet! I managed to steal a great Brewhouse glass from a bar in Dublin too lol

The ban's already well in place in most of Ireland, just waiting on it coming north on the 1st of April. Can't wait, I hate coming out of bars in Belfast with your clothes stinkin of smoke, whereas if I'm down south for the day the air is beautiful and you come out only smelling of the drink, which is much more tolerable lol and it's not on your clothes either.

Yeah all these Americans and Canadians who consider themselves 1/300th Irish or something feel this need to learn the language too - which is great I suppose, fair play to them, it's not an easy one to learn for some people!

Yup, that's the very order!

I actually also said a few threads back to another forum member that if your TV has a "progressive scan" mode, it's probably a "pseudo" progressive - it'll fill in all the odd lines on an interlaced picture but technically it's not real progressive scan because the Wii itself will not be outputting true progressive 480p. With an RGB cable and your TV's progressive mode turned on, you're sort of getting 480i.5 lol even when I'm playing the GCN and run the progressive mode on my Samsung 42" RPHDTV and using the component cables, it doesn't look anywhere as good as when the GameCube software is in progressive mode itself, that's the only way you'll get the real McCoy's progressive scan I'm afraid. Plus to answer your question about selecting EDTV 480p mode on the Wii's menu, the hardware won't let you select that mode until it detects component cables are connected. But that PS mode on your TV will make your games, movies and the likes a bit less flickery you probably already know that anyway!

I feel sorry for you Free Staters down there, the price of stuff down there is stupidly high; I mean, the UK prices are high, but Jesus, the Euro gets the worst deal of all by far! This is the first time I've noticed that you are getting a good deal in gaming: £179.99 = €267.40 And the Euro retail price is €249 - not bad. Even if it's raised by a tenner that's still cheaper than what we pay up north. Still, €4.80 for a pint in Dublin? Ouch.

This is a tasty piece of kit you could use for the 360, Wii, DVD and P33 altogether lol it's a bit expensive but I'm sure eBay has something similar for cheaper. EDIT: And we have a winner.

I worry about the component cable situation. Please God, don't let me have to do composite on a HDTV.

I would say go for the top one, the Samsung LE19R71WX, but there is no component IN on it it seems, which is quite strange! That's HD Ready, that's more like it, but you'll need to find one with component IN if you want to play Wii on it at its very best.

UInfortunately the Progressive Scan under the specs of both TVs is sort of like a pseudo-progressive function that a lot of TVs seem to have these days. It's not technically "real" progressive 480p/576p, so you'll definitely need to go for a HD Ready TV in order to get true progressive from your games. If you aren't fussed about progressive, by all means go for one of those, but I'd hate to let someone go ahead and spend that amount of money on something only to find that it's not exactly what they expected they were getting.
