Posted August 24, 2006 Time to make up some new mnemonics, Pluto is no longer a planet. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/5282440.stm?ls "They agreed that to qualify as a planet, a celestial body must be in orbit around a star while not itself being a star. It also must be large enough in mass "for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a... nearly round shape, and has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit." Pluto was automatically disqualified because its oblong orbit overlaps with Neptune's. It will now join a new category of "dwarf planets"."
Posted August 24, 2006 You beat me to posting this! :p The only reason Pluto has been called a planet since it's discovery (circa 1930...??) is that astronomers did not yet know of the Kuiper Belt. Pluto is most definitely a Kuiper Belt Opject (KBO). It isn't even the biggest KBO!
