Cool cutscene, but the bit where Norman Reedus' mate stabs himself in the chest repeatedly to try and kill himself, was totally unnecessary and a tad upsetting. Things like that and having a father kill his own child in Detroit + the trailer cutscene in TLOU2 with the girl having her arms hammered in... it's all getting a bit silly. And that's before God of War, Days Gone...

I hear what you're saying but there's an audience for these kind of games and it's why most of them are rated 18. It's like movies, I can't stand horrors or sick stuff like the Saw movies but there's a market for them, just as there is for Disney's animated movies and everything in between. Gaming is no different.

The first one is awesome. It's a little gruesome but as a thriller it's great. If you don't like the brutal scenes try going for the cut version.

Nah. I can't stomach anything like that. It's why I can't play stuff like Resident Evil 7 and may have to see how things go in TLOU2 before I play it. Graphics have become too realistic for me to handle these kind of brutal scenes. :(

Fair enough.

I don't have a problem with that. I do, however, as I've mentioned before, have a problem whenever a dog gets hurt. No matter if I have to do it or it just happens in games/movies :(

I guess the difference here is with films you can actively avoid watching them. At things like game conferences/awards the disturbing imagery is put on a plate for you, and you're "forced" to watch.

It's not a big deal, I just think these AAA action games are starting to get a little too OTT, for shock value. Or maybe more accurately, the methods used to advertise these are going for shock value above most else.

I agree with Ronnie here. I can certainly handle any of the grueskme shit but it’s becoming more prevalent and a lot of it is poorly implemented shock value shit. It’s a lot like the flak Tomb Raider 2013(2012?) came under for the borderline rape torture porn of Lara. (Though I don’t think the scenes I saw were that OTT or poorly implemented).

In regards to these more current games I’ve only seen a bit of Detroit and it’s child abuse scene. If the game wants to have an abuse scene that’s great, but for better or worse I want the scene presented believably and meaningful. It shouldn’t exist just to check a box and make the audience go “oh that’s horrible”.

Like 127 hours. (Never saw it but know the story). The way most games handle a situation they want to keep the action rolling. James Franco would have chewed his arm off in the first 5 minutes if it was a video game.

I feel I’ve rambled and droned on incoherently long enough but still would like to mention Hellblade and it’s presentation of mental illness. Again, it was handled very well, in a realistic manner. In a way to make people think. It easily could have gone the other way and have people be disgusted and unhappy with how an illness was presented.

Stuff like this sells to the majority of the audience watching. Also, it's not a new thing either.

Remember the original reveal of The Last of Us when the audience cheered as a guy got a shotgun bullet to the face? If there was an outcry then the publishers wouldn't do it but as it stands the audience attending these events lap it up. I mean, the people at PSX screamed that they wanted to shoot the android.

I don't agree with the methods used but both violence and sex sell products. With gaming I think it's become more noticable purely because of how realistic games have become.

I think the Detroit scene at PGW was done amazingly well, with many outlets saying it was the highlight of the show. TLOU2 scene on the other hand was poorly handled, with no real context to the situation.

Norman Reedus talked about Death Stranding on a B&H podcast; here’s what he had to say:

Quote

I know what the game’s about, to a certain extent. We went out to that music game awards a couple of weeks ago and we came on stage, and part of the scripted dialogue when you come out with the microphone was me saying: ‘now I need to go on the internet and figure out what that was about’. But I kinda know what it’s about because I’ve asked him a zillion questions.

The concept is so mind-blowing, because it’s not like, you know, ‘kill everybody and win the game’, it’s a connecting thing. It’s like the opposite. And, you know, it’s so ahead of its time. And there’s elements of social media in it, and the idea is that – you know, you have so many games, and so many parts of millennial culture I guess, is being alone in a room. And you lose physical contact with people. This is after that and the re-establishing of that physical contact.

[On motion capture] It’s super super interesting, but you know, when I met him [Kojima], I was like: ‘Oh, so they’ll play me?’, and they’re like: ‘No, they ARE you’, so as we’re doing this motion capture stuff, you know, they want me to be Norman. You know, they’re all standing around and if I scratch my head a certain way they go: ‘Oh, do that!’, and they’ll capture it. So by the end of the day you’re kind of not moving because we’re like, okay, if I keep moving we’re going to keep filming (laughing).

I’m down with whatever Hideo wants to do because he’s another level genius, that guy.

Nolan North confirmed to be working on the game.

I’m confused. How does this confirm Nolan North, that’s Troy Baker.

Oh dear, ignore me. I was just reading about the Uncharted movie and how Neil Druckmann is going to find it strange that Nolan North won’t be starring as Nathan Drake; must have got my wires crossed.

Amended my original comment :)

The DECIMA engine is incredible.

Oh man, I'm excited for this game :D

Love that we're finally getting into some lore for the game. You're right: the engine is just superb.

Still have very little idea as to what's going on, but I'd want it no other way ::shrug:

So, a new trailer was shown at E3 2018.

It reveals gameplay, two new characters and even some spoken dialogue...

...I still don't have a clue what's going on.

But that doesn't seem to matter, as I'll likely buy this game when it comes out in 2021. :D

I think it stands a good chance of releasing by 2020 - at the latest. Despite having seen more gameplay from The Last of Us Part II, I think Kojima is having a field day with misleading our expectations, and that this game will release before TLOUII: everything that we know about the game up to this point, outside of trailers, points to it being much further along than we currently think it is. I also think that there's a very good chance that some of the amazing folks over at Guerrilla Games have been working alongside Kojima Productions on this game, and that's why it could be so far along.

I remain an optimist :p

Also...

  • 15:30 to 16:40 – Death Stranding – Hideo Kojima returns to Tokyo Game Show after two years. Furthermore, he has come with the Japanese cast of Death Stranding. An introduction to Death Stranding, character casting details, behind the scenes stories, and then after that… this will be a event loaded with information you can only hear at Tokyo Game Show. Featuring MC Yuki Iwai (Haraichi), guests Hideo Kojima, Akio Ootsuka, Kikuko Inoue, Kenjiro Tsuda, Satoshi Mikami, and Nana Mizuki.

The game is closing out Sony’s TGS presence in a 70 minute slot on September 23rd. Could they be hinting at a gameplay demonstration?

We have some new footage courtesy of a trailer from Tokyo Game Show, featuring a first look at Troy Baker’s character:

They also presented a plethora of (concept?) art by Yojo Shinkawa for the characters that we’ve seen in the game’s trailers up to this point.

They also revealed Tommie Earl Jenkins’ character (it was previously rumoured that Idris Elba would be in the game, and it is currently speculated that Jenkins will be filling what might have been Elba’s role), a character that we have yet to see in a trailer.

Finally, Kojima-san had a little to say about the game’s release date:

If you’ll recall, Kojima Productions has previously mentioned that the game is intended to be released prior to the events of Akira (which takes place in 2019) and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Coupled with the fact that Sony/PlayStation executives have mentioned that this is the fastest turnaround that they’ve seen for a AAA game, and how Kojima-san now says that the prospective release date for the game hasn’t changed to this point, it seems like the game has been sailing along without any real hiccups on the development front.

A 2019/early 2020 release certainly seems to be on the cards for now.

Any clue what time it's likely to drop? I would assume it'll be a Japanese-centric announcement so would come in the early hours here but Sony seems to be pretty heavily US biased recently so it could come in US afternoon time instead.

I think we'll get a nailed on release date and a smidge more gameplay, the last couple of trailers set out the plot as clearly as we're going to get so can't see them doing another story heavy trailer.
