Dcubed Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Prior to Nintendo Directs. I just want to see games - not 60-something Japanese men making a fool of themselves on stage, and some random Canadian geek dude talk shhhite. Show me a game reel. But I love that stuff! There's nothing like having that live event and suddenly after hearing the audience to apeshit over the Twilight Princess unveil, Miyamoto pops out glad in a full Link getup looking like a prat! To be fair, I do like the sound of the Treehouse @ E3 event. The idea of having a seperate sent for nothing but live (actually live and unscripted!) demos of games is nice. But why does this (and the Direct) have to come at the expense of the press conference!? It's good to see that they've acknowledged that the Direct alone isn't enough, but you're still not gonna get that Live feeling when the announcements come rolling in, and there's nothing here that can replicate that Once again Nintendo is looking like a coward in the face of their competitors too... Surely the last thing that they need!
Serebii Posted April 29, 2014 Author Posted April 29, 2014 As a way of showcasing games, sure it's not the only solution. As a way of showcasing yourself as a company, it is still pretty much the strongest and most effective method there is. Like it or not, E3 is attended by more than just hardcore fans and specialist press and by not having a stage presence it will easily get overlooked. When you consider that Ubisoft and other smaller companies still have them, Nintendo's approach seems to be very narrow minded. Big showy events are part of the TV business, film business and many others. There might well be more effective ways of reaching out to fans but these are trade shows. But even the non-gaming media know that E3 is not about the conferences. It's all about the show floor.
Cube Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 But even the non-gaming media know that E3 is not about the conferences. It's all about the show floor. So what went wrong on the show-floor last year?
Hogge Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 I'm very curious for how this will be a "new kind of event". In the end, the only thing that matters is the games.
Serebii Posted April 29, 2014 Author Posted April 29, 2014 So what went wrong on the show-floor last year? Nothing, as far as I know.
Tamazoid Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Why is a live audience so important for so many people? We know many of the companies just fill it with employees who are instructed to applaud loudly (Microsoft). This could work out well for Nintendo, it all depends on the implementation, similarly to how last years direct-substitute could have worked a lot better for them.
Ashley Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 But even the non-gaming media know that E3 is not about the conferences. It's all about the show floor. Again, you're speaking for people that you have no right to speak for. How do you know that J. Smith from The Baltimore Star knows it's all about the show floor? How should they know that when every other company has a showing? What can they decipher from the show floor if they're not specialist? How do they know what's new? Without queueing for every game there, and then talking to the helper people to guide you through it, how will they know what the exciting new features are? What makes it difference from the others? When it's due and what platforms its on? The conference is to show and tell, the floor is to try out. The majority of non specialist press are not going to stand around waiting in queues for hours.
Falcon_BlizZACK Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 (edited) I value this over everything else: Just takes a minute. None of that hoo-hah, stats, figures, translations etc. But I digress. Edited April 29, 2014 by King_V

Personally I just enjoy the 'show' I value this over everything else: Yep, Nintendo needed one of those when it launched the Wii U to give us an idea of what this console would be about and how their franchises could look in this generation.
Ramar Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 That was embarrassingly cringeworthy... Not even remotely funny.
Zechs Merquise Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 No live conference!? I can't believe that they'd truly make that same mistake again! Even if they have nothing to show, a show of showmanship makes ALL of the difference! The reaction to last year's E3 showing was terrible! How could they really think that doing the exact same thing again will go any differently!? Are they just trying save money? (Unlikely since they're still doing stage events and booths at E3 itself...) Cowering away is not the answer! Nintendo Direct is not a panecia for everything! It shouldn't be one or the other! GAH!!! WHHHYYYYYYY!!! The live reactions and stage flubs make all of the difference! A pre-recorded video can't replicate that! How stupid are these people!? I totally agree, there is something special and electric about a live stage show. I know it's all planned in advance and choreographed, but it just feels special and 'big'. Remember when Miyamoto came out with a Pikmin in his pocket and feigned throwing it to the crowd after his part in the show - that was brilliant. Moments like that aren't possible with a soulless and pre-recorded show reel. I want Nintendo to come out swinging. Trash talk the opposition. Put their balls on the block and go all out. Try and upstage everyone with a huge show boating performance in the Nokia Theatre. Remember that year they showed Epic Mickey, Epic Yarn, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Goldeneye and much more? I want that again!

Retro_Link Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 It does make you think that if they had some big new IP's to show, games to wow a crowd, or some big new project like 'Nintendo Infinity' or QoL to get the press excited then they would be doing a press conference...
Hogge Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 I value this over everything else: Just takes a minute. None of that hoo-hah, stats, figures, translations etc. But I digress. That was a perfect E3. After seeing that, buying a Gamecube was a no-brainer.

I completely disagree. That's just come from your belief of what conferences should be and should have. There is zero reason to conclude that they're doing this because they don't have the content.
Retro_Link Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 (edited) I disagree :P That would have a far greater impact in front of a live audience. It's the difference between laughing with everyone in the cinema and perhaps not even laughing at the same moment when you're sat at home watching something alone. If Nintendo can engage with an audience and make them have a good time it feeds directly into how they write-up and perceive you moving forward. Edited April 29, 2014 by Retro_Link
Falcon_BlizZACK Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 I disagree :P Gahahaha - cracks me up all the time.
bryanee Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Shame about no live conference so I at least hope whatever streaming service they use wont be complete dog shit like last years.

canand Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 (edited) Cool I can't wait Nintendo don't have to have a press Confrence this sounds better than last year I liked it last year but did not like it buffering even though I got Fiber optic broadband Don't now what to make about this but there is going to be a new Nintendo System geting announced at E3 http://www.gonintendo.com/s/227226-snooping-around-nintendo-s-e3-site-reveals-mention-of-new-nintendo-systemk Edited April 29, 2014 by canand Automerged Doublepost
Debug Mode Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 NEW SYSTEM? It's gotta be a micro 3DS, right? Or the Wii U-don't-need-gamepad-now

Serebii Posted April 29, 2014 Author Posted April 29, 2014 Or leftover keywords from every other E3 site they've had :p Unless we're getting Wii games here...
Goron_3 Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 It will be a revision to the 3DS or Wii U allowing them to produce and sell them at a cheaper price. I wouldn't mind ditching my 3DS (launch spec) for an upgraded one but it's the poor screen that always puts me off Anyway, I'm betting on it being a cheaper Wii U, aka Wii U 'Slim'. We know they can't just price drop the Wii U without taking a huge hit so if they've identified some potential cost cutting measures, I'm sure we'll see that.
