Why do we view it as something low and bad? I personally believe we all still suffer greatly under outdated ideas about sex being something morally wrong or at least very taboo; and I believe the problems we do face in the sex trade are a direct result of this sex-negative attitude. We view it as something low, and by treating it as such, we make the reality so. I am very much in agreement with Moogle's and Zech's views on the matter; I believe we can clean up the sex trade and make it safe, regulated and respected, I believe we can turn it into something positive - but in order to do so I believe we need to get rid of our outdated taboos and negative feelings about sex. tl;dr: We need the companion system from Firefly. I'd be happier if people were educated on the massive negative impact the sex trade has on the mental and physical wellbeing of those involved, and if you're paying for it, you're contributing to this. Being fucked 8, 9 10, 11 times a day every day is going to make a person sore and uncomfortable. Fucking someone they find repulsive/unattractive and being used for their body can't be good for anyone. Even if it was their choice, it doesn't make it okay for anyone to physically and emotionally hurt them. I wish there was more support for people involved in selling themselves (objectification) for money. By this I mean to make sure that people entering the sex trade are doing it because they really want to, and know of what could and probably will happen to them plus offering alternatives and counselling. Everyone can easily make a bad choice, given their situation and mood they're in, but it's about giving support to those people who need it, no matter who they are. The legal and social systems should be put in place to protect sex workers as best as possible. Ideally of course all sex workers would be people doing it of their own free will. Unfortunately, although there are some that are, there are many who are not - including in Amsterdam. As I mentioned with the Swedish example legalisation is clearly not a cure-all. There are people who, privately, enjoy the idea of dominance or control. These feed into the relationship between consumers and porn, and prostritutes. There are people who want to speak for others and say that their sex, creed, race, gender should not be saleable. There are people who are sex addicts. There are people who are mentally fucked by abuse in the home. Sexual abuse as well. There are people who simply state they are "nymphomaniacs". There are people who sell themselves and are happy. There are people who are not. There are people who travel to amsterdam, a city we feel is 'safe' and 'good' - because they think they're getting a job. They are actually self-trafficking into prostitution. I'm going to stop with this contrived list of silly. The fact is it's a hugely diverse topic. There are definitely lives fucked up by prostitution, but similarly there are definitely people who do not see women as meat who use prostitutes, and prostitutes who do not feel abused and actually enjoy their jobs. The one thing I always try to comprehend in all situations is that there is no black and white. Moogle isn't, by default, representing his opinion of women just by sleeping with women -- just as it's not a guarantee that women are happy to be paid for sex, or won't be scarred or traumatused just because they give consent. ... The truth is probably both and a huge spectrum in between. However, whatever they may actually be, if it is their choice they should be allowed to do it in the safest way possible with as much protection as can be afforded to them. What does need to be emphasised though is that they should do it away from city centres, housing estates, schools etc. Because whatever we think of prostitutes, I think we can all agree that prostitution isn't an ideal thing to be pushed as a social norm or a positive route for women to take. It certainly shouldn't be normalised and be made available everywhere to the extent where young girls think it's just a normal and positive thing to sell themselves. I will qualify that with the simple point - even those who regularly use prostitutes wouldn't want their mother/sister/girl friend/wife being one! It's a matter of finding the balance between ensuring that people have the right to do as they wish with their own body in a safe environment, without allowing negative and damaging activities to be promoted as positives across the whole of society. You can legalise something, but if it's easier for people to do it illegally then they will. Whereas if you can provide more benefits from the legal route then the criminals will be forced out. Nobody is saying that signing a legal document will instantly solve the problem and cure the world of all ills, but there are definitely ways, if done properly, of removing the problems associated with it. We still have our problems as most married couples do, we have been back together properly for almost a year now. Most of the problems stem from the fact that i work and she doesnt, and still with the sex life sometimes. If you go to a really well-run place, it's actually far more like receiving a service. You have to prepare yourself in the way you're told (shave), and you're not allowed to touch the girl anywhere other than she lets you (usually the hips). I'm not being flippant but it really is not so different to getting a haircut etc, in that you pay and have to behave exactly as they stipulate. Also, what about men who go their whole lives without being able to get sex? Isn't it a good thing that they might be able to buy it from someone willing? These men may well respect women just fine, but that won't get them what they want on its own. Let's not pretend women don't judge men on their job and social/financial status. The last thing is that no job is really good for you - that's why they pay you to do it! At times, my job has been hugely stressful, probably advanced my grey hairs and had other effects on my body. I do it because that's the deal - they pay me money and I take on the stress (give them my mind and body, actually!) Women who use their bodies (prostitutes, strippers, lap dancers) may find it far easier to earn a living like that rather than take on the types of jobs those who are against the sex trade would like them to have.
