I've never actually played it. Has it aged badly?

Nope! I played it for the first time on the Wii Virtual Console and was absolutely floored at how good it was!

Pick it up for the Wii VC or try and get the DS port (Which has some nice benefits, but also some slight questionable changes, not in gameplay, just in text and the dialogue of a certain character), you can't go wrong.

Wave Race 64 in particular is going to be a massive upgrade going from 50hz to 60hz. It makes a tremendous difference with this game. You guys are in for a treat! :D

The PAL version is notorious for being one of the shoddiest PAL conversions ever done for a Nintendo game. It's so slow that they actually had to cut out parts of the intro for the music to sync properly!

Really, you guys don't know what you're missing!

Any word on the upgrade discounts for those who own Wii versions? I assume they'll still do that?

Yes they do, on every previously released game that was also on the Wii VC, without exception.

I still remain meh about the whole 50hz/60hz thing. It makes zero difference to my purchasing decisions.

You can't see the difference with Wave Race 64!? How can the PAL version be even remotely acceptable to you!? It's garbage!!

For those of you who've never played the NTSC version, this Wii U VC release is gonna feel like a whole new game to you! :D

No idea as I never watched the video. I simply don't care. The PAL games were good enough for me in my youth and are good enough for me now.

The most exciting thing for me is the prospect of these games potentially being transferrable to the next Nintendo handheld

I don't find myself particularly bothered about whether the games are 50 or 60Hz as I certainly wouldn't refuse getting a game just because it wasn't 'optimal' but with my N64 hooked up and both Wave Race 64 and 1080 Snowboarding downloaded on the Wii Virtual Console, there's no real reason for me to purchase these games again, however awesome they are

As I've said before, portable SNES, N64 or even GC games is what will make me get downloading again in future.. and I can't wait :yay:

Double Dragon III: The Sacred Stones

Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos

Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom

The Adventures of Bayou Billy

After a rather hectic run up to Christmas followed by some much needed relaxation...

VC Weekly returns in style with brand new reviews of two Ninja Gaiden titles by Dcubed.

And some reminiscing from myself over Double Dragon III along with a bizarre encounter with Bayou Billy.

With four 8-bit reviews to choose from, it's a NES extravaganza filled with nostalgia.

Enjoy!

Some bloke on Miiverse just pointed out that New Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario 64 DS are now rated PEGI 12.

No doubt due to the Luigi casino mini games, but think about it.

New Super Mario Bros is as edgy as Pandora's Tower!

Super Mario 64 DS is more unsuitable for children than Trauma Center.

It's more adult-orientated than Gates to Infinity, a game that involves suicide cults and straight-up murder.

They're both as dark as Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow!

Yup. NSMB DS and SM64DS are officially as harrowing as the likes of Slender: The Arrival, every single Ace Attorney game except for Dual Destinies, every non-Mercury Steam Castlevania game, the Monster Hunter series, Xenoblade, Xenosaga, almost every Final Fantasy game, every Fire Emblem, Flower Sun and Rain, every Street Fighter game and every Tales of game

It's also just one notch below Bayonetta 2

I can't help but feel that PEGI's priorities might be just slightly askew here...

I've seen quite a lot of posts on Miiverse complaining about the brightness in Wave Race and 1080. I've not even noticed myself, they just look like typical N64 games to me. ::shrug:

Yeah. It's just on the GamePad and non-optimised TVs, they have the darkness filter.

They're complaining about something they don't really understand. They're looking at PC emulator shots and the N64 Wii U VC and wondering why the PC one looks so much more saturated and bright when they don't seem to realize that that's not how they're supposed to look.

N64 games are supposed to have a dulled image, that's how the console would output the signal to begin with. The games were designed around having a dim level of brightness, so it's more accurate to dull the image like they have done on Wii U.

Same with the GBA. GBA games were oversaturated on purpose so games looked as close to normal as possible on the non-lit screen of the GBA. As such, the VC versions had to be dimmed, but that angered a lot of people.
