Happenstance Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Wasnt the Wii U version of Watch Dogs being done by a different developer as well?
Rummy Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 As a quick aside, Goron posted this over in Wii U general - starts with discussion about the WiiU's recent poor sales and situation and what it might all mean etc - finding myself agreeing with a lot of it. Just thought I would throw this here: http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/36202 It's the most recent Nintendo World Report podcast and it was recorded once this months NPD results came through. The podcast is known as a 'podcast for adults' over on Neogaf and the discussions are VERY good and certainly the best you'll find on the net when it comes to Nintendo and gaming. They are all Nintendo fans but are very fair on their comments on the Wii U and Nintendo. One thing that they discuss in this podcast is how many gamers are suffering from Nintendo franchise fatigue, which is a great point…Worth checking out. Worth a bit of a listen! What will be interesting about Watch Dogs is how much time and effort has gone into the wii u version and just how easy or a chore it is for developers to get stuff working on the Wii U. Some of the screen shot comparisons of ACIV make the wii u look bad compared to the 360 /PS3 but whether that's a hardware issue or simply a developer one we don't really know. Didn't Criterion praise the Wii U's ability quite a bit when it came to N4S:MW though? I will be honest, I've no idea who's handling Wii U WatchDogs - there is a probability I won't be off the bat launch but wait to see reception of the different versions.

Worth a bit of a listen! I found myself resonating with this. They sound just as down on the console as I do and they make some really good points. The Mario sales should really set alarm bells ringing off at Nintendo HQ. Considering so many Wii U owners have not bothered to pick up the game (which has scored so highly) should tell Nintendo that it’s time to put Mario to bed. Give the guy a break and lets not see another Mario game (2D or 3D) for 5 years. Once Mario Kart is released that needs to be it. Didn't Criterion praise the Wii U's ability quite a bit when it came to N4S:MW though? I will be honest, I've no idea who's handling Wii U WatchDogs - there is a probability I won't be off the bat launch but wait to see reception of the different versions. They did but for whatever reason many of these multi platform titles have ended performed the worse on Wii U and I just don’t know if the hardware dictates that more time and resources is needed to get the Wii U version up to par which isn’t cost effective considering how badly the games sell at retail.

Thanks for this. I've just finished listening to the doom and gloom section and they are spot on with just about everything they say. I've never listened to these guys before but i've been looking for more gaming podcasts to listen to and this will do nicely in the future.

Nice bump for Pokemon and fantastic bump for Mario 3D. Attack on Titan had a real nice 2nd week. Hardware. Wii U continuing with the holiday bumps. Hopefully this will lead to a higher baseline than what we have seen once holidays are over. Hoping the the 3DS can hot 5 mil for the year but 600k in two weeks doesnt seem likely right now. I do wonder if Nintendo are worried about the 3DS in the sense it has had MH4, Pokemon and now P&D but will likely be down yoy. I’m guessing they will release the 2DS in Japan next year as how many more big hitters do they have? Edited December 18, 2013 by liger05
Goron_3 Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Awesome to see the 3DS systems doing great. Aren't the January sales in Japan normally the highest of the year? Interesting month or so ahead.
Debug Mode Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Holy shit, well consider me wrong about the Wii U and Mario's staying power! It's not doing bad at all in Japan!
Clownferret Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 Had similar last year in regards to Zombi U, a friend asked me why they were bringing out a zombie game on a console for kids. Have no idea how Nintendo can get rid of that view. they could do worse than start advertising the mature games that are available on Wii U. All their ads are Mario & Pokemon, whilst Sony and Microsoft advertise COD & Battlefield. I'm sure most people don't even know COD is available on Wii U.
Sheikah Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Nah, even if they heavily advertised that those games were available on Wii U, everyone would still want to buy them on either PS4/X1 or PS3/360. Saying that is like saying a new social media website should go all out advertising to get people to switch from Facebook. If people are already on Facebook where their friends are then it doesn't matter how much you advertise it. There's no incentive to make a switch. Plus the online infrastructure on Wii U is pretty dire.

Kaepora_Gaebora Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 This is from NeoGaf via GoNintendo, seems Wii U is on a comparable level to PS3 in Japanese sales trends: First year (52 weeks): PS3 - 1,273,555 Wii U - 1,219,474 PSV - 1,074,621 First 54 weeks (current Wii U LTD) Wii U - 1,343,139 PS3 - 1,341,304 PSV - 1,110,333 Interested to see how PS4 compares in the New Year!
Goron_3 Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 I also saw on GAF that in the states, the 3DS is matching the PSP's performance at an equivalent point in their life cycles. If they sell just under 2 million 3DS's next month they'll then be ahead of the PSP. The DS was miles ahead though

It tapped the market that didn't exist in gaming then, and has now gone on to the mindless dross of smartphone gaming. PSP didn't sell bad at all, was just under the GBA and the GBA did very well. If the 3DS does those numbers, it's damned good

You have to take into account the PS3 price in its first year which was way higher than the Wii U. DS's sales were abnormal, however. It tapped the market that didn't exist in gaming then, and has now gone on to the mindless dross of smartphone gaming. PSP didn't sell bad at all, was just under the GBA and the GBA did very well. If the 3DS does those numbers, it's damned good Correct that market has gone however I still think it’s a worry that less than 3 years in the 3DS is down yoy. In a platforms early life we should see growth especially as so many big hitting titles have already been released. Another thing maybe not so much in Japan but the West is the weak software sales. Nintendo have to bring handheld games down in price. Either people are now accustomed to cheap smartphone prices or just refuse to pay the same price as they would for a console game. The 3DS should be selling way more software when you look at the HW sales in the West and Nintendo cant just keep ignoring that. Get the games back to DS pricing. £30 for premium games but everything else £20 – £25.
Goron_3 Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Yeah 3DS games are still ridiculously expensive here in the U.K. It blows my mind that £39.99 is supposed to be the R.R.P when the majority of 3rd party consoles games can be found around the mid £20 mark a few weeks after release.
Serebii Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Way to write off a whole industry that contains some great games and thousands of people that spend their time, effort and money making them Not a problem
Sheikah Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 I wouldn't say the infrastructure is dire. It needs party chat and a notification method but that's it... No it's not just that, online on the Wii U is sluggish when you navigate through menus (in fact this extends to just general menu navigation). It's bested by the Vita which is saying something. The store and downloads/account system is also pretty defunct, there's very little incentive right now to ever buy standard games from their store. Really though you already know all this, this topic has cropped up loads of times with the general consensus being that they are far behind. Well, apart from the most ardent Nintendo loyalists who think it's almost on a par.

I can only imagine their faces when they heard Microsoft talking about the cloud.
Clownferret Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 well at least those sales figures show that Wii U is salvageable. PS3 went on to sell 70+ million units and right now I think Nintendo would happily take half that. A major price cut is going to create the required momentum, the problem Nintendo face is do they continue to sell low numbers at break even or do they take a hit a get consoles in peoples house and hope to get the money back on game sales.

I'm not sure its all about price. They could reduce it again but how much of a difference would that make? There has already been plenty offers, bundles etc and it hasnt really had any impact. I just dont think there are people in droves simply waiting for another price cut. If people dont want it at £199 then I doubt they want it at £149. Relying on software sales would be crazy considering Wii U owners currently are not buying games.
Ashley Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Sony also made some serious changes to their strategy that would have impacted sales. We've yet to see Nintendo make similar changes, but it's early days.
Hero-of-Time Posted December 20, 2013 Author Posted December 20, 2013 Sony also made some serious changes to their strategy that would have impacted sales. We've yet to see Nintendo make similar changes, but it's early days. Very true. The difference between Sony when they launched the PS3 and the Sony now is staggering. You also have to remember Sony still had all the 3rd parties backing them, whereas Nintendo have pretty much none at this point.
Daft Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 It needs party chat and a notification method but that's it... That might have been true before the XBO and the PS4 launched.
