500k in Japan though right?

Can't imagine people here clamouring to buy a Wii U for that.

Obviously in Japan only, we've only ever gotten the first PS2 game over here sadly.

500k is VERY solid in Japan though. That's MGS/Yakuza/mainline Tales of/near Resident Evil territory!

Could well be a system seller in Japan, especially considering that it's getting released alongside a strong showing of 1st party tiles around Xmas!

So Wii U has finally just gotten a significant 3rd party exclusive game announced for it, the new Taiko Drum Master game!

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=674797

The series has consistently pushed about 500k per entry (yes, even the one released for Wii last year - they're slow burners, but they stick around!)

Nintendo were smart to keep support for Wii controllers going! This is easily the biggest Wii U 3rd party title since MH3U and should be a significant addition to their holiday arsenal! :D

Now if only we could get it localised... I have the Wii games and they're mad fun!

Damn shame we won't be seeing that over here though. :(

I loved Taiko no Tatsujin DS.

Japan is one market though. I honestly can't see something like this having any real impact on the Wii U's fortunes; it doesn't look like the sort of title that will have people outside of Japan going crazy for it.

No, it won't have any direct impact on western markets; but it might just help matters significantly in Japan, and a healthier Japanese market means more chance of support from Japanese developers.

More Japanese support = more potential Japanese made games that could get released westward and a better chance of getting at least multiplatform titles :)

Yeah, that'd obviously be great. The problem is that we won't see any of that potential increase in support for a long time though. :hmm:

Not really sure what your trying to argue. The Wii U is in desperate need for killer selling software and if that means just in one region then so be it.

Monster Hunter on the Vita would be huge for the platform in Japan but wouldn’t change anything in the West, it wouldn’t be a bad thing though would it?

3DS rising again. People preparing for MH4.

Wii U & Vita same as usual. Awful awful sales. At this point all I see for Wii U is modest bumps. I just cant see how the console can go from selling 5k a week to a 50k+ average. Mario isnt enough to make that happen.

Splinter Cell Wii U must of sold about 10 copies.

NPD - Aug. 2013 software/hardware/analysis (Pikmin 3 makes top 10)

137902351233pfx4z.jpg

Madden, Saints Row IV, Disney Infinity push sales as Wii U gets first exclusive on the chart with Pikmin 3, but hardware down 40%

It's been a difficult year for US retail game sales, but the industry-tracking NPD Group's August sales figures offer room for a bit of optimism heading into the key holiday sales season. Even with hardware sales stagnating due to upcoming next-generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony, gains in new software and accessory sales were enough to push the industry's total haul for the month up 1 percent to $521 million.

Even though the month's best seller, EA's Madden NFL 25, was actually down in sales year-over-year, a strong lineup of blockbusters without analogous releases in August 2012 helped drive software sales up 21 percent to $305 million. It was also the first month since November 2011 to see a year-over-year increase in retail game software sales.

Beyond Madden, the only game on the top 10 best-selling chart to have a 2012 counterpart was another annualized EA Sports offering, NCAA Football 14. Deep Silver's first entry in the Saints Row franchise came in second, while Disney Infinity, the multimedia giant's entry into the Skylanders-inspired toys-to-life market finished third on the charts. Accessory sales, which would include sales of Disney Infinity action figures and playsets, were up 7 percent to $136.7 million. August also marked the first time an exclusive Wii U game cracked the NPD's monthly top 10 as Pikmin 3 slid into the 10th spot.

Unfortunately, drastically dropping hardware sales offset almost all of the gains on the software and accessory side. Sales of new gaming hardware were down 40 percent year-over-year to just $90.8 million, despite Sony rolling out a new 12GB PlayStation 3 model for $199 and dropping the price of the PS Vita to $199 midway through the month. Nintendo also announced a Wii U price cut and the cost-conscious 2DS at the very end of the month, but the cut doesn't take effect until next week and the new handheld won't appear until next month.

The 3DS was the best-selling piece of hardware for the fourth straight month, while the Xbox 360 pushed its streak as the best-selling console to 32 straight months.

NPD analyst Liam Callahan estimated that the retail spend was about half the overall gaming spend for the month (including digital revenues and used game sales), and suggested the actual amount spent on games in the US for August was a little over $1.2 billion.

August 2013 NPD: Nintendo’s response, various sales and stats

Nintendo has issued an official response to this month’s NPD report. The statement contains many of the same sales that we covered in a post we covered a short while ago, but we also have lifetime sales figures for a few 3DS games.

In any case, here’s Nintendo’s response in full:

Fueled by a strong start for Mario & Luigi™: Dream Team and the continued strength of games such as Animal Crossing™: New Leaf and Luigi’s Mansion™: Dark Moon, Nintendo 3DS™ finished August as the best-selling video game system in the U.S. for the fourth consecutive month. More than 6.47 million units of Nintendo 3DS software have been sold so far in 2013, an increase of nearly 30 percent over the same time frame last year.

Other highlights for August include:

  • Mario & Luigi: Dream Team for Nintendo 3DS launched on Aug. 11 and sold nearly 190,000 combined physical and digital units.
  • Pikmin™ 3 for Wii U™ launched on Aug. 4 and sold more than 115,000 combined physical and digital units.
  • New Super Luigi U™ for Wii U launched in stores on Aug. 25, after two months as a digital-only download, and has now sold nearly 120,000 combined units.
  • So far in 2013, nine Nintendo 3DS games have sold at least 250,000 combined physical and digital units. These include:

Title Launch Date 2013 sales Lifetime sales

Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon 3/24/13 863,000 units

Animal Crossing: New Leaf 6/9/13 739,000 units

New Super Mario Bros.™ 2 8/19/12 406,000 units 1.85 million units

Fire Emblem Awakening 2/4/13 390,000 units

Mario Kart™ 7 12/4/11 352,000 units 2.84 million units

Pokémon™ Mystery Dungeon:Gates to Infinity 3/24/13 298,000 units

Super Mario 3D Land™ 11/13/11 265,000 units 2.86 million units

LEGO® City Undercover: The Chase Begins 4/21/13 264,000 units

Nintendo 3DS fans will have a lot to play this fall and through the rest of 2013, including Pokémon™ X and Pokémon™ Y (Oct. 12), The Legend of Zelda™: A Link Between Worlds (Nov. 22) and Mario Party™: Island Tour (Nov. 22). On Oct. 12, Nintendo launches Nintendo 2DS™, an entry-level portable video game system that plays all Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS games in 2D at a suggested retail price of $129.99.

The great lineup of Wii U games continues this month with The Wonderful 101™ (Sept. 15) and The Legend of Zelda™: The Wind Waker HD (Digital: Sept. 20, Physical: Oct. 4), and into the fall and holiday season with Wii Party™ U (Oct. 25), Super Mario™ 3D World (Nov. 22), Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Dec. 6) and Wii Fit™ U (Holiday). On Sept. 20, Nintendo is launching a limited-edition Wii U bundle featuring The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD at the new Wii U Deluxe suggested retail price of $299.99.

Data regarding physical sales of games in August are from the NPD Group. Data regarding digital downloads of games and combined physical/digital life-to-date numbers are from Nintendo’s internal sales figures. All numbers are specific to the United States only.

Not a great result for Pikmin 3, but not a bad one either. The really disturbing part though is that it had almost no effect on hardware sales (which supposedly stood at around 32k according to quasi leaks on GAF).

FEA did amazingly well though! It'll easily end up being the best selling FE game of all time in the US (and is no doubt over 1 million sold WW now :D )

Dream Team did pretty good too. Not as good as Bowser's Inside Story, but solid nonetheless (oddly enough much better than its Japanese debut - and it'll be sure to have monster legs to boot!)

Oversize not much to note other than Lost Planet 3's tremendous sub 10k performance, Killer is Dead (literally) at sub 15k and Tales of Xillia defying the market and selling over 100k! (Making it the best launch for a Tales game since Symphonia DOTN! :yay: )

Vita and Wii U dropping like flies

Why, you might even say their sales have plummeted...

Why does everyone think it would have effects on hardware sales? It was supposed to be a launch game. It was revealed in very good time. I'm almost convinced these games were selling the systems before they were released.

I'm intrigued by the huge mario numbers though. Whilst I disagree with the current Marios somewhat, they do do big numbers. Will SM3DW be able to shift systems or cause any difference? Maybe. I'd be most intrigued to see what numbers it manges to do compared to a number of other titles on the system, too.

Pikmin 3 DID have an effect on hardware sales in Japan though. It more than doubled the console's sales and kept its baseline above 10k for over a month.

In the US though it had almost no effect (ok, it probably stopped it from falling further but even so, the effect it had was miniscule even in comparison to Japan!)

Splinter cell did below 294k. Conviction opened at 486.1K on Xbox 360 back in April 2010. Bomba!!

NPD source on gaf

Putting creamsugar % in numbers:

[360] Splinter Cell: Blacklist < 210k

[PS3] Splinter Cell: Blacklist < 85k

[Wii U] Splinter Cell: Blacklist < 5k

[360] ] Saints Row IV < 306k

[PS3] Saints Row IV <144k

[WII] Disney Infinity- ~74.000

[Wii U] Disney Infinity- ~48.000

The Wii U splinter cell numbers everywhere have been horrific. Under 5K in the US is just abysmal.

Disney Infinity Wii U number is decent considering the install base.

Wii U sales I guess will decrease as people wait for the price drop to kick in but whether it will make much difference long term I aint so sure.

I think some people did though. The 1st party Wii U releases were supposed to be the start of the turnaround but with Pikmin 3 and W101 (US release still to come) the needle hasnt really moved.

That price drop comes into effect this month, so even accounting for the drop off in sales as people wait, next month's NPD results should still show a significant increase...

Not a bad thing. The PSP was pretty successful in its first couple of years

Yes it shot out of the gate and I think over here it still has the highest launch sales for the first weekend.

The PSP's problems were software sales. Piracy really killed those sales, far more than it did on the DS.
