it was a generalisation, but makes the point. You have focused on the software comment and not the overall post. Sony in particular are very guilty of blatantly copying Nintendo hardware. I can't believe anybody would play bowling, golf or tennis on a controller after using the Wiimote and without Nintendo these new experiences would not exist. My overall point was that we would end up playing the same games, the same way for ever more.

Yes I focused on that comment because that is what I wanted to comment on. It is a short sighted comment that gets thrown around too often.

Nintendo are very good at certain things sure but they are not the only ones. If they were gone then changes would just come from elsewhere. Just look at the Oculus Rift, amazing VR hardware that has great potential.

Definitely.

Indies are providing new approaches, challenges and experiences that some of the bigger established studios aren't doing.

Oh great. Thanks for confirming "everybodys" opinion. What did you tell Serebii earlier?

Posted

It was a "definitely" to your "maybe" i.e. there's a definite possibility that you might be the only one. I didn't say you are definitely the only one.

Posted

This is the dumbest thing ever. I can't even begin to...

...I mean, just one example off the top of my head, Daylight is an indie game. And it looks a whole league better than Resident Evil. Nor does it look like a smartphone game.

Indie devs? No thanks. Some people might be satisfied with that but I'm not. Did I buy a home console or a smartphone? I want proper games from established major developers like the next Resident Evil, Tiger Woods, Pro Evo, GTA and MGS. I don't want mickey mouse titles from some 2 bit developer scraping together money from Kickstarter projects. That's not to say there aren't some good indie titles. Maybe that's just me.

Read what I said it's what I want and I didn't say they were all bad, there are definitely some good indie games. But for every good example like you've given there are bad indie games.

Posted

You said you want "proper" games, indicating anything not released by the major studios are somehow fake. You are belittling the hard work that thousands of people put in, simply because they don't work for a studio. Let us not forget, a lot of indie developers used to work for big studios.

Posted

Your need for an 'established' developer is utterly pointless. Who cares if they're established? It's such an arbitrary condition. You've got blinkers on.

Actually bringing it back round to topic on that note - do downloadable titles get measured much in terms of sales and charts? I say downloadables because Indies make me think downloadable, but I rarely see any quotes on sales until they're huge like minecraft etc. where it's become so big the small numbers are insignificant.

Posted

Nah, I agree with Wii. Indie games are mostly synonymous with little games. I didn't buy any system for those, but the grand games like GTA V.

According to Famitsu, it has been a very Nintendo week in the top 10. 9 3DS titles and 1 Wii U title

Pikmin 3 was at #8 with 11.5k

NSMBU was at #17 with 6.8k

Lego City was at #23 with 5.1k

Pikmin 2 was at #25 with 4.6k

Wii U did just under 11k

25 of the Top 30 titles, according to Famitsu, in Japan last week were on Nintendo consoles. Puts things into perspective a little...

Media Create

3DS LL 47,005

3DS 23,992

Vita 19,363

PS3 14,331

Wii U 12,047

PSP 7,616

Wii 1,772

Xbox 360 322

Pikmin 3 did 10,956 at #9

Pikmin 2 did 6,342 at #19

Not much of a bump, but still a bump so that's good. Hopefully TW101 will at least keep the console sales stable for a week or so (by which time it'll be only 2 more weeks until Wind Waker HD comes out and boosts the numbers; starting off Nintendo's Xmas lineup).

Pretty hilarious to see Pikmin 2 sell almost as much as Pikmin 3 this week though

The biggest surprise for me though has to be M&LDT's legs. It has really defied its poor start really well! Disney Magic Castle is also quite the beast! :o

40.DEAD ISLAND: RIPTIDE - KOCH MEDIA

The top three are all new entries this week with ‘Saints Row IV’ landing at No1, followed by ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist’ at No2 and ‘Disney Infinity’ at No3. ‘Saints Row IV’ is the 4th biggest launch of the year so far (behind Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us). It fails to outperform the debut of predecessor ‘Saints Row: The Third’, but is still the second best launch for the controversial series. Taken over from THQ by Deep Silver/Koch, it is the ambitious publisher’s third different title to reach No1 in the All Formats chart this year (the others being Dead Island Riptide and Metro Last Light). This is a feat only matched by EA. Sales were split 69% on Xbox 360 and 31% on PS3. The highly anticipated ‘Disney Infinity’ opens strongly, selling 3.6 times more starter pack units at launch than the original Skylanders. It performed best on Xbox 360 with a 43% share, then PS3 at 22%, Wii 21%, Wii U 10% and 3DS 4%. Last week’s No1, ‘Payday 2’ (-76%) tumbles to No18 while the rest of the Top 10 mostly shuffles amongst themselves. ‘Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition’ (+3%), ‘Black Ops II’ (-17%), ‘FIFA 13’ (-14%) and ‘Animal Crossing: New Leaf’ (-9%) all drop two places to No’s 4, 5, 6 and 7 respectively. ‘Lego Batman 2’ (+1%) is a non-mover at No8 ahead of ‘The Last of Us’ (-9%) at No9. 2K Games/Take 2 enter the chart at No10 with ‘The Bureau: Xcom Declassified’ and there is also a new face at No22; the Wii U exclusive ‘The Wonderful 101’.

No surprise Wonderful 101 didnt do too good.

Unless I'm missing something I dont see Splinter Cell Wii U in the individual chart. Huge bomba!

Can see Disney Infinity remaining in the charts - back to school soon so children will talk about it with their friends potentially.

W101 did fine given the usual WiiU troubles but the true bomb is The Bureau: XCOM Declassified.

The Bureau was never going to do well. It had the backlash when first announced because people wanted traditional XCOM, then it disappeared for ages only to come back with a name change.

I'll be getting it eventually as I think it looks interesting but not until its cheap in a Steam sale

Splinter Cell absolutely bombed on the Wii U. Disappointing.

Rayman should do better for Ubisoft on Wii U but I think Watchdogs is going to bomb hard.

More disappointing is with Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 there still hasnt been much movement in Wii U HW sales.

Posted (edited)
I wonder if the Vita is going to see any uptick in sales with the price drop of both the console and the memory cards.

Should see a rise in sales but I'm not expecting a major uptake. It just doesnt have those major titles which people flock too. If you look at the US sales which are awful even if they were to double on last months sales that would still only take it to 30k for the month which would still be an awful number.

Yeah, the comeback just isn't happening at all. What's next on the list? Zelda?

Looks like it but can a HD remake really do that much.

Perhaps a price cut is the only real hope.

It will need a price cut but I'm not sure it will get one. Iwata said this in a recent interview with CVG:

"If the price is actually an issue [with Wii U], then there is some contradiction between the current sales balance between the Basic and Premium versions of the Wii U," Iwata said.

"The basic version should have sold a lot, but the fact of the matter is that people are buying more of the premium version. So the issue is not there."

That to me is crazy talk. The basic isnt selling simply cos it offers no value at all. If they think the basic not selling means price isnt an issue then looks like a price drop isnt on the agenda.

Seems to be getting mixed up between cost and value.

Still, companies always deny things up until they release/do them so we can pretty much ignore what Iwata says.

I still think a price cut will happen or a decent bundle released to try and counter the XBone and PS4. Whether this has any impact is another matter.

I just dont know what they can do with a price cut? Would £199 do much? Some retailers have tried this.

Wonderful 101 bombed hard in Japan. I know they only shiped 30k but damn to not even sell 10k. The game bombed and Wii U Hardware sales declined even with a new release.
