General Gaming Sales/Charts Discussion

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one ;)

I realise he hasn't said its crap, I meant more about being honest or trying to make light of something can back fire spectacularly. But being a X1 and Wii U owner, this statement doesn't entice me to buy a PS4. I'm no fan boy and have nothing against Playstation, I think the sales figures are brilliant and they've smashed it so far, with so many people on here going for one, the comparison of numbers in the FIFA 15 thread says it all!

But if one of the main guys doesn't know why it's done so well and can't sell it to me, then it doesn't scream to me I've made the wrong decision and should be picking one up! Just my opinion though, I can appreciate what you're saying and how to other people it may elevate the product :)

...are you kidding?! Yeah who gives a shit what Shuhei Yoshida says!

Precisely. Quite honestly, the overwhelmingly vast majority of people will not give a flying fuck, or even be aware that this interview took place. By questioning why people will buy it after that interview you are basically contemplating that -

A) The article is even going to be read by most potential future PS4 owners (it certainly isn't)

B) That people who do read that would for some reason pass up on the superior console out of some weird principle.

People already know that there are tons of great games coming to PS4. That is going to factor a million times greater than what some guy in an interview says.

Haha, you can't tell if I'm serious, yet you're presenting a serious (I presume) argument based on you having a quick look in the comments section of a website addressing this story and then claiming a success? You've basically admitted there your own statement is utter tosh!

Nope, I have gone about collating multiple opinions and reactions to the interview on a multiformat gaming website as opposed to arrogantly (and ignorantly) pushing my own opinion about as if that's how it just is.

In your post, you suggested that this interview cast him in a bad light to a large group of people and questioned who would buy a PS4 after this.

In the EG comments section there are hundreds in favour, with the positive posts themselves garnering hundreds of votes.

So who do we take the word of? You, in that this was bad press and will have a negative effect, or hundreds of other people, who thought this was a good and candid interview? This is by no means a rigorus comparison, but you'd think that if this was such a stupid thing to say, more would be mad about it.

I'll lend a little credibility to using the comment section of EG as a valid measure of group opinion. If you want a truly stupid thing, then turn to when Microsoft proposed the used games policy and always online...

The comment section sure as shit jumped on that then. The comments section on that site is actually a pretty good 'at a glance' measure of the gamer community's reaction to these sorts of things. You might have your own thoughts, but generally speaking those comments at least give you more of an opinion what other people are thinking, too.

Anyway, the only proof in my being right would be is sales slowed down but that probably won't happen, so I imagine it's no harm done to the PS4.

Good to see that you've basically admitted that the interview will have no bad effect now yourself. :p

So much for 'who will buy a PS4 after this'.

...but you haven't, or certainly hadn't at the time, gone about collating any evidence, you said yourself you had a quick glance at the Eurogamer comments!

Are you referring to me as being arrogant and ignorant? If so not only am I saying all this is my opinion, I'm not claiming to represent anyone else but myself, I came on a forum to put my opinion forward in a discussion.

The lines you then use "so who do we take the word of?" And try to condescend my opinion because "hundreds of others" disagree is arrogant and ignorant, aren't I allowed to share my opinion here if it's not the same as yours? So what if I'm against the grain on this, no one else here has agreed with my statements but that doesn't mean I can't think them.

This isn't the first time this has happened between us, but it might be the last. Utterly fed up with "are you joking?" And "can't tell if serious" claims, if you're not prepared to take my opinion seriously there's no point me posting it!

...but you haven't, or certainly hadn't at the time, gone about collating any evidence, you said yourself you had a quick glance at the Eurogamer comments!

The numbers themselves are evidence of the collective opinion of gamers on a multiformat gaming website. While it's no means rigorous, it is a reasonable gauge of whether a mixed gaming community generally viewed it as a dick move, or a decent interview. In the past EG comments have highlighted the disdain for Microsoft's policies, as well as Nintendo's lack of online features, as well as even when Sony outright rejected EA's subscription service (saying that it would have been nice to have a choice).

If so not only am I saying all this is my opinion, I'm not claiming to represent anyone else but myself, I came on a forum to put my opinion forward in a discussion.

Just because you have an opinion, it doesn't mean people can't challenge the things you're saying and provide a counter opinion.

Of course you're free to voice your opinion, but ultimately what you're saying is "this is a bad interview and people would be mad to buy the console after this". My response has never been nothing more than "most people don't see it that way (reference to EG), and the interview actually worked out well for him".

This isn't the first time this has happened between us, but it might be the last. Utterly fed up with "are you joking?" And "can't tell if serious" claims, if you're not prepared to take my opinion seriously there's no point me posting it!

Everyone has the right to express their opinion, no matter what it is. Sometimes though, an opinion can be strikingly maligned with somebody's elses opinion, leading to those sorts of remarks. As long as you know that it's just a way for other people to express counter opinions then I don't really see the issue. Life would be boring if we started every rebuttal with "I disagree, here is my opinion instead:"

Weren't they also expecting Hyrule Warriors to sell at least 1 million copies and isn't Japan Dynasty Warriors biggest market? They better hope the U.S. and European Zelda fans buy into this big time.

Edit: Yes they were.

“In addition to our Warriors series fan base, Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda is also a very popular series with a large fan base, and I think it will become a great new market because of The Legend of Zelda’s legion of fans overseas, we are aiming to sell more than one million copies worldwide.”

Never gonna happen now then. If it sells that bad in Japan, I can't imagine the bloodbath that will ensue over here. We don't even get the chest, just a fucking scarf.

In all seriousness though, there's no hope for this game doing better in the West, surely? It may do decent numbers, but not a million by any stretch. Zelda itself is getting more niche by the year and Dynsasty Warriors was never that big here in the first place. They're throwing a fairly unknown franchise with a dying one and hoping for success - on a floundering console.

I can't believe they expected to sell 1 mil copies. I don't think Zelda fans just buy anything with link in it.

MineCraft just never dies does it? Saying that, I was close to buying it today, just waiting to get it at around £10.

And surprising to see Tomodachi climb up once more. Is there a new promotion for it? And it seems the whole Sim City debacle last year and no pre-release reviews didn't put people off the Sims 4, a bit surprised by that actually.

The UK chart makes for interesting reading. Minecraft is doing well. Only 1 PC title in the top 40. Do people say the PC scene is dead? I honestly don't know and yet it gets plenty of ports. I know it's easier to do. Tomodachi Life is sticking around a good while as is MK8 but that's it bar Pokemon X at 40 and one DS title. All 4 of the console versions of Watch Dogs are still there more than 3 months after release. Will the Wii U version even chart 4 one week if/when it's ever released? I'd like to know the sales numbers for all these games rather than an arbitrary number each week. Nintendo are dead in the UK compared to the others.

Aug. 2014 NPD predictions - Wii U numbers up over last year

The following estimates come from Michael Pachter...

- 65,000 Wii U units sold

- this number is up 111% compared to last year

- total Wii U software sales last month reached $12 million

PS4 has sold 1m units in the UK, making it the second fastest selling home console of all time.

The machine reaches the figure after 42 weeks. Wii managed the same feat in 38 weeks.

By comparison, PS2 hit 1m in 50 weeks and Xbox 360 took 60 weeks to hit that target. PS3 was quite quick to 1m, selling to that number by week 46.

And UK MD Fergal Gara has told MCV that many of the customers that have picked up PS4 have come over from Xbox.

"We have certainly seen PS3 consumers come across quite hard and fast," he said.

"But a very significant proportion are people we have never seen on our network before. And from their behaviour and the types of games they are playing, it’s fairly clear that a big chunk of those have come across from Xbox, which is tremendous to see.

Not bad at all.
