Hughes - Of Welsh origin though I can't find any meaning other than "Son of Hugh". Here in Ireland Hughes was taken as the English translation of the Irish surname "Ó hAodha" which is said to mean "Fire" in ancient Irish... though the correct Irish translation for "Fire" these days is "tine" or "dóiteán" depending on the context/situation/grammar in use EDIT: Oh and "Mokong"... Posted December 6, 2011 I think this thread just goes to show how much more badass names used to be. People used to (presumably) take a look at their child and say: "He looks to me like a Lord of the Meek Thunder Seeker" and then that would be their name.
