What does your name literally mean?

Recommended Posts

William - vehement protector (???)

Robert - fame-bright (again, ???)

Buxton - from Buxton (the Derbyshire one, of water fame)

So, yeah... A weird one, eh?

Charles - 'manly', 'the rock', 'farmer'

Robert - Bright, fame

Douglas - 'Flowing From The Dark River'

Douglas is a traditional Scottish surname. Some families used to have a double 's' at the end of it. My family decends from the Black Douglases.

I don't know whether to think of us as an exclusive group or just really generic. :/

Manderson = a manlier version of Anderson.

Well my name is Diego, and as I have heard, San Diego means whale's vagina. So I will assume that it either means whale or vagina, most likely the latter.

Mine is hebrew for "He will add"

My surname (which is apparently really rare) is derived from Mer "Fame" and Ric "Power"

It sort of fits me :)

Franklin - Apparently means Free, Free Man or Free Land owner who is not of Noble Birth...depending on which google result I go with.

Hughes - Of Welsh origin though I can't find any meaning other than "Son of Hugh". Here in Ireland Hughes was taken as the English translation of the Irish surname "Ó hAodha" which is said to mean "Fire" in ancient Irish... though the correct Irish translation for "Fire" these days is "tine" or "dóiteán" depending on the context/situation/grammar in use

EDIT:

Oh and "Mokong"... Filipino nickname for someone who is funny/a clown/acts silly

I think Diego and Tiago have the same etymological origin. Does this mean that my second name also...

...

Chris, from what I understand, means something about carrying Christ/Jesus.

Singh I believe means lion and also something about warrior, something to do with the kshatriya which from the hindu scriptures were warriors/protectors of the land, or something.

Rummy means I drink too much, and that I like cards :p

Nickname for life!

Martin - Servant to the god of war

Francis - Free man

Irving - of the clan of Irving

I'm a free man? Awesome. But looking it up a bit further it means "Little Frenchman", and the word France is thought to mean free. So Free man comes from that.

No. It's Joe Merrick. Merrick being a derivation of two germanic words of Mer meaning Fame and Ric being Power

I think this thread just goes to show how much more badass names used to be.

People used to (presumably) take a look at their child and say:

"He looks to me like a Lord of the Meek Thunder Seeker" and then that would be their name. Now we have to hide behind thousands of years of mistranslation and mispellings to name our children Terrific Badger Lust or whatever.
