Serebii Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 A canny Spanish woman from Galicia - a sun-drenched region on the border with Spain and Portugal - has decided that she owns the star, and has the registration papers to prove it. Angeles Duran, 49, says that the sun officially belongs to her now, having had the celestial body registered in her name at a local notary office. 'I know the law': An international agreement states that no country may claim ownership of a planet or star, but it says nothing about individuals Ms Duran told the online edition of daily El Mundo she took the step in September after reading about an American man who had registered himself as the owner of the moon and most planets in our solar system. There is an international agreement which states that no country may claim ownership of a planet or star, but it says nothing about individuals, she added. 'There was no snag, I backed my claim legally, I am not stupid, I know the law. 'I did it but anyone else could have done it, it simply occurred to me first.' The document issued by the notary public declares Ms Duran to be the 'owner of the Sun, a star of spectral type G2, located in the centre of the solar system, located at an average distance from Earth of about 149,600,000 kilometers'. Ms Duran, who lives in the town of Salvaterra do Mino, said she now wants to slap a fee on everyone who uses the sun and give half of the proceeds to the Spanish government - and 20 per cent to the nation's pension fund. She would dedicate another 10 per cent to research, another 10 per cent to ending world hunger - and would keep the remaining 10 per cent herself. She said: 'It is time to start doing things the right way, if there is an idea for how to generate income and improve the economy and people's wellbeing, why not do it?' For those who might be a little too broke to venture out in the sunlight - and risk a large bill at the end of the day - Ms Dueran has not yet figured out a way of enforcing her sun charge. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1333776/Spanish-woman-Angeles-Duran-claims-owns-sun--plans-start-charging-ALL-users.html
Jonnas Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Oh lord...This shames Galicia, Portugal, Spain, Europe, the World and Humanity in general. And who the fuck claimed ownership to the solar system? You know what, that guy is even worse.
MoogleViper Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Oh lord...This shames Galicia, Portugal, Spain, Europe, the World and Humanity in general. And who the fuck claimed ownership to the solar system? You know what, that guy is even worse. You can buy an acre of the moon off of him.
Cube Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 It's like those "name a star" things - it holds no real legal ground.
Ramar Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 I know this is just a daily fail article, but I'd love to see this woman try and enforce some kind of sun usage tax. 6 billion people telling her to piss off.
MoogleViper Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 I'd be willing to bet money that she did this in jest.
The Lillster Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Is it possible to own reality or maybe all 11 dimensions of it?
Cube Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Is it possible to own reality or maybe all 11 dimensions of it? I've claimed the twelfth dimension.
The Mad Monkey Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 I wonder if it's possible to sue her on overly cloudy days?
heroicjanitor Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 20% to the national pension fund!? LOL How is she going to charge? Do we all have to wear solar panels which measure how much we take? If it's charged on vitamin D intake then I'm screwed...
Cube Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Just think of how much the National Trust will use. All the plants on their land gobbling up her sunlight.
MadDog Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 haha, this made me lol. It's not even like you have a choice, how can you not "use" the sun.
Cube Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 haha, this made me lol. It's not even like you have a choice, how can you not "use" the sun. You could go into orbit and constantly stay behind the Earth.
MadDog Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Has anyone claimed Earth? I claim Earth! I charge £1 for everyone that ever steps on my Earth.
Jimbob Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Oh dear. Sounds like crap to me. No-one can legally claim owner-ship. Now then, how will she claim royalties for sun usage. And in the case of owner-ship, i legally own Space. Not the planets themselves, the space in-between. Including all asteroids, meteors and comets.
Ramar Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 haha, this made me lol. It's not even like you have a choice, how can you not "use" the sun. Well to be honest, people charge for lifes other essentials such as water.
chairdriver Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 It's things like this that make you realise how silly our system of life is. That you can own land. That you can own ideas. The notion that the Royal family have more ownership than the majority just because.
MoogleViper Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Well to be honest, people charge for lifes other essentials such as water. Technically they're charging you for the service of purifying the water and delivering it to your house on tap.
Cube Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 You can always take a few bottles to your nearest lake/river/spring and get your own water.
EddieColeslaw Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 20% to the national pension fund!? LOL How is she going to charge? Do we all have to wear solar panels which measure how much we take? If it's charged on vitamin D intake then I'm screwed... Psh, my solar bill will be so small, I'm constantly sitting inside in front of the computer! Time to get rid of all of the windows in the house!!
Goafer Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 And who the fuck claimed ownership to the solar system? You know what, that guy is even worse. Yup, but there's nothing to stop people marching in old school style and just taking his land. Worked for the British Empire. It's not like he even has a space army (or ever will) to defend his turf. Basically the planets belong to whoever gets there first and secures it.
The Peeps Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 She's got it the wrong way round, we should fine her for shining her Sun all over our Earth. I would actually love if a government did that, even as a joke.
Shorty Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Haha that would be awesome. Charge her for manslaughter for every person who dies of UV poisoning, or charge her for the destruction of crops during a drought. "Well, it's your property isn't it? You shouldn't have just left it there to cause that damage..."
