Ashley Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 I quit my job the other day. Under the false pretence that I suddenly decided to move to London rather than having planned it for months. They were surprisingly okay about it. A few people said they knew I wouldn't be there for long (because I'm better than that job ) So, quitting stories? Any interesting ones? When I quit Woolies it was interesting. Long story involving the police... :p But I quit, not fired! Game I quit three times. Third time stuck, obviously. Although I left in a flame of glory. The new manager woman (who was a right cowbag bitch who left her discarded tampons all over the place) put on the system not to re-employ me due to poor performance. You can say don't re-employ (I never intended to go back anyway) fine, but poor performance? Fuck you, I'm fucking better than that. I found this out on the Tuesday or Wednesday and my last day was Saturday so I wrote the below note and left it for her and the regional manager who was coming in the next day. (and it turns out she wasn't in on the Saturday anyway) To Jules If you believe my performance to be “poor” you could at least have the decency and tact to tell me to my face. This level of two-faced behaviour from management is exactly the reason the atmosphere has become so negative, and the reason why people are leaving because if you feel management will be this underhanded who can you rely upon? I will admit my performance has slipped but it is because anything that is done is heavily criticised in an unconstructive manner, and personally I see little point in doing some of the managerial jobs because you have the tendency not to. Furthermore, after giving me an EPR for saying that I didn’t want to be here, due to personal issues, you yourself turned around and said it a few days later, as previously stated this two-faced approach to management is, for more than any other reason, why I wish to leave. I shall be in on Saturday and I am willing to be pleasant for the sake of peace, and I did not wish to leave on these kind of terms but I felt that I could not take such underhanded behaviour without responding, as during my entire career at Game I have constantly proved my dedication and commitment and I take great pride in the fact I put nothing short of 100% into the work I do. I believe if you were to ask anyone else who I have worked with or for they will agree. Ashley Actually yeah now I'm more annoyed. Forgot the EPR thing. I didn't want to be there because there was shit going on with my brother and I wanted to be able to support my mother, whereas she didn't want to be there because her boyfriend had the day off. Cow. Aaaaanyway eventually she was demoted and fired and the manager of Woolworths was demoted and eventually made redundant. Moral of the lesson; mess with the bull... Yes, so, quitting? Tell me stories!
Cube Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 I panicked for a second. I thought you were leaving us.
Tyson Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 How about getting fired stories? I was fired from a pub I worked in for various misdemeanors including; turning up late, eating half a tray of roast potatoes, drinking on the job (the head chef said it was cool yeah?), getting the waitresses to do my end of day duties and not turning up to work. Okay, so the last one was the only reason given for my departure but I can safely say after everything I did I was not in the boss' good books. I know it makes me sound like a total loser but I normally wouldn't behave like that, the problem was that the pub was in far too close-nit a village so the atmosphere was too relaxed. I still turned up the day after for a drink.
rizz Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 I quit my band 2 days ago. Wasn't fun anymore and I was struggling to afford it. Simple.
EEVILMURRAY Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 I panicked for a second. I thought you were leaving us. Panicked?! Got my hopes up for a minute there... I jest. We'd have no one pr0 enough to sort the site. The new manager woman (who was a right cowbag bitch who left her discarded tampons all over the place) put on the system not to re-employ me due to poor performance. You can say don't re-employ (I never intended to go back anyway) fine, but poor performance? Maybe some viagra to help maintain a throbbing member? poor performance? Fuck you, I'm fucking better than that. Well, apparently not. Give some of your previous conquests for a full review. So, quitting stories? Any interesting ones? When I quit Woolies it was interesting. I quit. That's is one interesting fucking awesome story. C'maahn kiddo, give us the full lowdown. I've always wanted to quit in a proper blaze of glory, just saying "Bite me" like in Wayne's World. But I don't really want to burn my bridges so early in my long life. It's been the usual "I wish to terminate my position here/This is my last day" sort of affair.
Paj! Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Being part of Buffy must have been that atrocious band Hepburn's finest moment. I've never had a paid job I've quit. *leaves thread*
Pit-Jr Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 I strategically quit a machine operator job at the worst possible time when i knew that no one else could step in to take my place without months of training. The company lost thousands of dollars and had to work many weekends to pick up the slack It was a colossal dick move and it felt AMAZING. They did get the last laugh though since i came crawling back a year later and im still there
Mr_Odwin Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 The biggest thing that I quit was my PhD. I was two and a half years into it. In ideal circumstances they are done in three years, but mine was going to be one of those that took four years (because of various research hiccups - never trust anyone else's work!) where the last year is unfunded. So yeah, I'm doing a PhD for two and a half years. I've had a boggy period where I got stuck for ages, and now it's going to take me another year and a half to finish. The other thing is that it makes me miserable. I have no friends - I did my undergrad degree elsewhere. The other PhD students at Nottingham were mainly from Nottingham's undergrad programme and weren't interested in new friends. I'm bored of the subject matter Writing up makes me want to die - seriously the most heinous thing that I have ever done. I don't really have the money to stick around for the unfunded year Didn't get on that well with my supervisors. I fessed up to Esther that I was unhappy. She was supportive, which was a real relief. So I sent an email to my supervisors telling them all this. We chatted (I was somewhat emotional) and we agreed that I could knock it down to an MPhil, and essentially just wrap up and finish as soon as I'd written up what I'd done already. Sometimes I think "oh, if only I could have lasted another chapter or two I'd have a PhD," but I remember how unhappy I was. It's one of the reasons I appreciate my current job so much. The work you do really makes a difference to the quality of your life, and I think the only difference it would've actually meant to me (bar an ego boost) would be that I'd have opportunity to work in academia, which is pretty much what the PhD was, and that sucked. tldr; drop out PhD student, but now happy.
MoogleViper Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 So if you had finished it would you be Dr_Odwin?
tapedeck Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 (edited) I'm sure I've talked about this before. I worked for an insurance company inputting peoples insurance policies. Major boring and was good at it. I was the fastest worker on my team and so got more work than anyone else. Anyway, we found out we were all losing our jobs due to not getting a renewed contract for the insurance company. We had to fill in a form about our manager and she had been shocking with us, total slave driver and never listened to me when I got more work than others. Others Said they would write negative comments but they didn't so mine was the only negative one. So... She pulled me in the office and demanded an explanation and I said I didn't need to give her one. She said I was ruining her future career options and was a loser an a waster etc... For doing this. So I went back to my desk and she told me to leave her team. At this moment she was going through my training files saying how childish I was for doodling in the margins. So I picked up my files and launched them in her face. Walked out of her team and that was that. Everyone in the office just stared and a few started clapping. I was bricking myself but she wasn't employed again by the company as everyone knew how awful she was. Good times. I've had a few other jobs where I've told managers to ram their jobs up their arses. I've worked in some shocking places. One manager invited a parent in for a staff member I had sacked. I then had to explain to the parent how poor the staff performance had been as well as several health and safety issues. It got ugly as the parent and kid went mental calling me allsorts. Afterwards I told the manager of the hotel if she ever put me in that position again I would leave immediately. Edited August 20, 2010 by tapedeck
MoogleViper Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 She said I was ruining her future career options and was a loser an a waister etc... I've been called a hipper, legger and even a chester. but I've never been called a waister. That's just bang out of order.
Nami Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 I want to quit! Just not got the guts up to do it yet but your stories give me a good feeling things could work out if I do So worked in Lush nearly 4 years, great job but been there way to long, and been trying to get out for 7 months and keep messing up interviews partly because I'm so busy around them I can't prepare and one interviewer called me saying we'd love to give you the job but we can't wait for you to work your months notice! Gutted! I can't face another Christmas there so want to hand my notice in in November unless I get lucky and get a job before....eeek, it'd just be so scary! Reading Mr Odwins post just made me think though, if it's making me miserable then there's no point! We shall see, may have a story to add on here soon.
Supergrunch Posted August 21, 2010 Posted August 21, 2010 I quit playing the trumpet when I was about 10. Was very pleased to do that - I hated it, and was rubbish, having nearly failed my grade 1 exam. Erm, other than that, it was a big release to switch from a physics module to an evolution one in my first year at university. And then again to switch into linguistics, although I'm very glad of my first year and enjoyed it. But all these experiences have led me to believe that if you feel unhappy doing something for a prolonged period of time, then you should just stop doing it and then everything will be amazing again. I haven't got any job quitting stories because the only paid work I've ever done was an hour and a half of explaining photosynthesis to someone.
Ashley Posted August 21, 2010 Author Posted August 21, 2010 I panicked for a second. I thought you were leaving us. I won't lie, it was my Cruel Intention. But I know where to find you if you're in Lush! Perhaps next time someone says "we want you sooner than in a month" talk to Lush. You've put in a lot of years there and they should hopefully understand that you're progressing with your career (unless they're a megadouche) and may be able to do shorter. Have you any holiday time? You could always count that as some of your notice period.
