Guitar Hero 5 heads our way this...Summer? Hitting on September 1st - in America, anyway - the next instalment of the GH franchise looks like it might be taking things in a similar yet somewhat different fashion. The art style for the game has once again taken a turn for the more cartoony, and you'll be able to play with up to 4 of any instruments in any mode. 4 drum kits, 4 guitars, 4 vocalists, it's possible. In addition, it looks like the entire set list will be available to play from the very start, moving away from the idea of it being a game with new levels you unlock, and closer to a party game you put in and play...hm.

The bands announced for the game so far include:

  • The Rolling Stones
  • The White Stripes
  • Kings of Leon
  • Tom Petty
  • Bob Dylan
  • Johnny Cash
  • Santana
  • Vampire Weekend
  • Beastie Boys
  • Coldplay
  • Duran Duran
  • Gorillaz
  • Jimmy Eat World
  • Muse
  • The Raconteurs

Muse, Kings of Leon, Coldplay, White Stripes, Gorillaz, Duran Duran? Not a bad start Activision. I imagine we'll see more to come from the game in the coming months.

Another purchase you won't be able to resist or just another addition to a string of titles you're slowly beginning to despise? Either way, we already know it'll sell millions of copies..

The Duran Duran song, I bet, will be Hungry Like The Wolf which I have nothing against really.

So far, from the confirmed artists, the ones that appeal to me are Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and Santana. I think I'll wait till I see the full line up before dismissing it because even though I hate the constant pilfering of the genre by Activision, the Guitar Hero games are fun to play and when your someone like me who doesn't have a whole load of time for bigger games, you can just come on there and play a couple of songs in a short period of time.

I think what Activision should do, besides stopping the rape of the Guitar Hero franchise, is create a set list made half up of well known artists and then go and fill the rest of it with unknown, perhaps even unsigned bands to build up some fans for them and bring them into the limelight. I personally think that'd be a good idea.

They've got their work cut out though with RB: Beatles out the week after. What will people pick? Another GH title slightly upgraded or another RB title slightly upgraded but parading the best band of all time? It'll be interesting to see what people buy. I know immediately what I'd choose.

A few cool artists on that list. But I think I'm done with music games. Between GH2, GH3, RB1 and a borrow of RB2, I've had my fill.

I really enjoyed Guitar Hero 3 on the Wii, but once the decision was made to go down the full instrument route with World Tour I just didn't want to know.

I appreciate that the game could be played with just the guitar but I would have felt that I was missing out on some of the experience had I not picked up an extra instrument or two and I refused to give Activision the satisfaction. If I had wanted to go down the full band route I would have looked into Rock Band, however I never felt compelled to.

For all I know, I may have missed out on one hell of a good game experience with World Tour (I don't know) but with the subsequent whoring out of the game, what with the multitude of DLC and seperate band endorsed packs I am beginning to think it's overkill and I am glad I have lost interest in the game/genre.

That's what I was leaning towards Villan. I've basically been put off of the Guitar Hero franchise by Rock Band. It feels more like the gamers game of choice, that and Harmonic know how to keep the community interested and not feel useless in the grand scheme of things.

Harmonix know how to make a music game. Before Guitar Hero they made FreQuency and Amplitude for the PS2 (I've never played the former but the latter is a cracking game.). The first two GH games are immense and definitely the pinnacle games of the series.

Guitar Hero III is still a good game, but losing Harmonix was the worst thing to happen to the franchise, even worse than Activision milking the cash cow.

I'd agree also. I think instead of releasing new games, Activision should focus on bringing these new tracks that would be in the new games as DLC. Rock Band continues to see an incredibly steady amount of DLC every week and Guitar Hero gets in a month what RB can get in a week. Activision would sell more if they put the songs as DLC instead of a full retail game. It makes more business sense to do it that way but that'd be a simple idea and would mean that they'd have to stop making the GH titles for a while. You know, it's a good idea and surely they must have thought of the idea.

Sadly, I highly doubt this is the case. My theory is one I've stuck with since the Rock Band/Guitar Hero split; people will continue to buy Guitar Hero because of the name attached to it, and whilst there's a new GH game coming out, people will buy it. I don't think DLC is big enough for people to consider it beating out retail releases.

Whereas with Rock Band, people who know the industry know that it's made by the people that made the good GH games - but the public awareness of the franchise or this fact is small. Therefore by releasing DLC it keeps the fans interested in the franchise without people getting sick of it, seemingly because Rock Band is more geared towards gamers than Guitar Hero - as is DLC.

I bought Guitar Hero World Tour the other week because I wanted to give it a try (being into RB2 so much). And the general consesus amongst my 'band' mates was that it was crap compared to RB2. I just can't help thinking that by making the release of Guitar Hero an annual franchise they are watering down the games and making them crap.

Like EA did with Fifa for many years, just re-releasing the same game with minor updates in the form of kits and squads, where as for Guitar Hero it'll be in the form of songs.

Meh... not so sold after all :/ tbh the main thing I would want Guitar Hero 5 for is Muse, all the other stuff in that list Rock Band has a lot of allready and it will only be one Muse track... so I'll probably hold out for a whole album / pack hopefully getting put up on Rock Band.

Queen & David Bowie?

Surely that could only be one song...or did they do other collaborations?

Sunny Day Real Estate, eh? A band including the Foo Fighters' bassist and were instrumental in establishing the genre known as 'Emo', eh? Wonder what they sound like...

Well normal GH logo is okay, but its got "5" underneath and the font just looks shit. Not exactly a big deal, but I'm a logo whore.

Too right. I thought they would at least stick with roman numerals, that way they could use the gibson flying V for the five!!

I'm a genius.
