darksnowman Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 From ONM: Strap yourself in readers - it's time for some controversy. Here's where you get to attack the holy grails of gaming. Those games that everyone seems to adore but you really can't see the appeal of. Everyone's got one - so it's time to bare your soul and prepare for a flaming! I'll kick things off in suitably rabble-rousing fashion with... wait for it... Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I don't like it. There, I said it. Sure, all the Nintendo madness crammed in there is indisputably awesome but the actual gameplay? No thanks. The control scheme, the randomness, the chaos - all reasons that you probably love it, but in turn they're all reasons that I really can't get into it. So come on, fess up. What's yours? GTA? Final Fantasy? Sonic The Hedgehog? Pokémon? Animal Crossing? Don't be afraid - let us know below! But be warned: anyone who has a bad word to say for Super Mario Galaxy, Advance Wars, Zelda: Wind Waker, Dr Mario or Resident Evil 4 had better come armed with a pretty solid argument! Basically, its been a while since we vented about what games we think are overrated and didn't do it for us individually. As you all know, I will rarely pass by an opportunity to sink the boot in a few "beloved" game series so here goes... METROID What a boring, uninspired, slog of a franchise... and from Nintendo, I suppose everything they touch doesn't turn to gold. I mean... Fusion is the only one I rate at all. Well, the Hunters Demo was really good but the full game was not. Metroid, Super Metroid... the Prime series (the Wii one being the best due to the controls- but the best of a very bad bunch, oh and Prime 1 was redeemed ever so slightly with the inclusion of the Fusion suit!). What I will give the Metroid games is that they sound good on paper but they totally crumble when it comes to playing them. RESIDENT EVIL Again... so, so boring. Umbrella Chronicles is the only saving grace out of all the Resi games I've played- for some reason I want to try Code Veronica out but I doubt its gonna change my opinion on anything. Stupid puzzles, cumbersome item management... controls that make the games unplayable (even the "fantastic" 4 is still dogged with run, stop, shoot mechanics) and trudging around shooting things got old verrrry fast. They tried to spice that up didn't they by making you have to burn zombies so they wouldn't come back... fun. I think not. I mean, I like my fair share of so-called boring games such as Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing, time consuming RPGs and all but Metroid and Resi... they just... suck... so... bad.
dwarf Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 I'm sorry but whilst I admire your courage you are just targeting yourself to be verbally raped. Do not insult Metroid Prime ever again. It is the best game that has ever been conceived and created, not open for argument I'm afraid. Can I ask have you completed it? I can see why people would admit to saying GTA being boring and overrated because it is highly debatable but when something like Prime comes out it is unanimous that the game is gold in the gaming world.
darksnowman Posted May 6, 2009 Author Posted May 6, 2009 Of course I forced my way through it. How else would I have a second file with the Fusion Suit.
Goafer Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Final Fantasy 7 I absolutely loved it up untill the bit where it shifts to usual "world map" type RPG. From then on it just became just another RPG. I don't get the appeal at all. Early Mario I just don't get what sets them apart from other platformers at the time. I'll admit they are fun, but nothing stands out to me. I'm sure I'll think of some more later.
Happenstance Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Early Mario I just don't get what sets them apart from other platformers at the time. I'll admit they are fun, but nothing stands out to me. I'm sure I'll think of some more later. This has got to be a bannable offence, right?
Cube Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 I would blamber on about how Super Mario Sunshine is down there with Sonic 2006, but you've all heard it before. And I've also mentioned how much I hate Pokémon (mainly the battle system, though). I also find 1080, Pilotwings and Wave Race to be incredibly boring. I also didn't like Super Mario World (one of the few pre-Mario 64 games that I've played) when I first tried it a few years ago. Plus GTA (except Chinatown Wars). I also hate Halo (even though I enjoy it with friends). I also find Space Invaders and most similar arcade games to be boring.
dwarf Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Of course I forced my way through it. How else would I have a second file with the Fusion Suit. Bizarre, I don't know what to say... Uhhhhh.... Well personally the music, bosses, the locales, the brilliant lore made it a stand out game. Puzzles and beams were awesome. I don't understand how you could not like it unless you wanted to dislike it.
darksnowman Posted May 6, 2009 Author Posted May 6, 2009 This has got to be a bannable offence, right? Probably infractionable at the very least. Let me sleep on it. Bizarre, I don't know what to say... Uhhhhh.... Well personally the music, bosses, the locales, the brilliant lore made it a stand out game. Puzzles and beams were awesome. I don't understand how you could not like it unless you wanted to dislike it. Nah man, I was hyped for it. Had it pre-ordered, got it day one! It took me until the bit where you have to go hunting for the artifacts to really fall out with the game. I was waiting for everything to kick off and the game to open up, but having to go hunting everywhere for those artifacts was so cheap. Up until that point, I was finding it ok and felt like I was progressing through the game, then reaching that point was like hitting a brick wall for me. (Hey, I don't think I've ever moaned about the dreaded Wind Waker Triforce hunt, go figure.) I stopped playing Prime for ages because of those artifacts! Phendrana was ok but I've played in much better snowy locales... and I hate Magmoor, so with it being pretty much the hub of the game... I hated spending time in there. I didnt like Metroid Prime I like your style.
dwarf Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 I'm fucking back in because I just had an idea. What's your favourite game so I can slate it? (please say Galaxy)
darksnowman Posted May 6, 2009 Author Posted May 6, 2009 I'm fucking back in because I just had an idea. What's your favourite game so I can slate it? (please say Galaxy) DKC 3 baby. You just had to check my profile. Meant to say before about FF 7. Is it overrated? It sure is. But is it a very good game? ...yep.
Goafer Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 I'm fucking back in because I just had an idea. What's your favourite game so I can slate it? (please say Galaxy) Early Mario. Fill your boots.
dwarf Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Well that's boring because the early Mario games were good (not sure what ALL the fuss is about) and I haven't even played DKC 3. I bet it's just nostalgia you like that game for. Doesn't even look worth trying. Obviously I'm joking, just pissed off that you can slate Prime lol
Nolan Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Beyond Good and Evil, didn't like it just didn't. Chrono Trigger, not the RPG everyone hypes it to be. Halo Multiplayer, single player is fine (great in the first then it degenerates to just okay by the third) Multiplayer was bad and just got worse. Final Fantasy Tactics, it may be an epic game, but Fire Emblem is tons funner just shorter. FFVII I love it, but I hate it at the same time. I suppose I wouldn't feel compelled to hate it as much if other people didn't hail it as being the greatest thing they've ever experienced and ever will experience.
Goafer Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Chrono Trigger, not the RPG everyone hypes it to be. Halo Multiplayer, single player is fine (great in the first then it degenerates to just okay by the third) Multiplayer was bad and just got worse. I quite liked Chrono Trigger. Not entirely sure why though. The multiple ending thing annoys me though. I prefer a definitive end to a story. A couple of variations I don't mind, but CT seemed to have too many. Good call on Halo though. I don't get the appeal of any of them. I enjoyed the first one, but the other 2 were very "meh". Some more that I just don't get: Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing They just felt like chores to me. I enjoyed Harvest Moon for quite some time when I was younger, but now I realise that most of the game is spent doing chores. I just couldn't get into Animal Crossing so maybe I missed something. Mario Kart It could be because every time I go round a friends house it's always "Hey, lets play Mario Kart", but I don't like this game. There's no skill in it. You can be driving perfectly and all of a sudden "WHAM WHAM WHAM" you get hit by 3 things at once and you're last. It's just too random. You may as well sit in a circle and spin something and whoever it lands on is declared the winner. It's ok for the odd go, but I get real tired of that game real fast. World of Warcraft Played it for a few months, cancelled my account the other day. It's just boring grinding all the time. It could just be that I don't know many people that play it. I'd probably enjoy it more if I played with a regular group of people, but meh, I'll stick to PSU.
tapedeck Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Well that's boring because the early Mario games were good (not sure what ALL the fuss is about) and I haven't even played DKC 3. I bet it's just nostalgia you like that game for. Doesn't even look worth trying. Obviously I'm joking, just pissed off that you can slate Prime lol DKC3 - Pi$$es on pretty much ALL platformers. I bought, played to death and TRIED to love Metroid Prime. But...alas, I LOVED the art style and the atmosphere was almost edible - but I just didn't like it. And I LOVE Super Metroid. But...when going back to Super Metroid recently, I was actually bored. Metroid is a title which you need to turn off the lights and plough through before it grabs you and doesn't let go. I feel this is the same with the Resi series too. I only liked Resi 4 - and that's more a shooter than anything else. I've still got Resi 5 sat, unopened lent from a friend. It looks shit when I watched him play it. Never liked the demo neither. Anyway....Retro games I just don't 'get' are limited and far and few between. I can usually see why a game is popular/holds credit. Must admit though - I've tried for years and just can't really get into the FPS genre.

Listen I love you like I Love everyone here but I dont like your taste in games(harsh I know) First metroid: you love metroid fusion because the game really held your hand in it and no other metroid game did this. This applies to resident evil too.. I wont say you dont like hard games because dkc are challenging really but I dont think you like games where heavy thought is involved.... You like things to be simple..I think... the best metroid game is super metroid.. then prime then i guess arguably prime 3.. but again 3 was toned down. resident evil: oh 4 IS fantastic you cock and UC is pretty good but its no main resident evil game.. The reason I prfer games like this is because you get what you put in... YEs its hard work but they are more rewarding in the end but I do understand its not for everyone.
tapedeck Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 but I dont think you like games where heavy thought is involved....You like things to be simple..I think... You callin' us casual!? Some of my pet hates are backtracking and solving puzzles involving coloured keys/dragging objects all over the shop (seen in Resi/Prime/FPS genre). These are just frustrating factors to me. I just wanna game. Play you know...have fun. I like a good puzzle game but when some genres throw in bizarre puzzle elements I get peeved. FPS games shouldn't really need puzzles...I just wanna tank the shit outta someone. And horror games shouldn't have fancy, huge puzzles in there neither. I just wanna pap my pants and shoot zombie dogs in the snout. Fair?
Goafer Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Must admit though - I've tried for years and just can't really get into the FPS genre. Me neither. My friends at work were always banging on about the latest shooter and trying to get me to buy it. Their arguement was always that it was different to every other FPS and somehow better. To me they're always just run and shoot. I can never see what makes the latest one different to every other existing one. Oddly enough, I sometimes like third person shooters though. Although I think that's just because they tend to be more tactical and have a better cover system (IMO). Which leads me nicely onto: Gears of War I just can't see what's so good about it. It feels very generic to me. Big guys shoot aliens for a while, win, smoke cigars and congratulate each other in an overly macho way that's in no way making up for something. The first one entertained me for a while, but it never felt special.
Jonnas Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 LOL at the responses. Darksnowman dares everyone to slate popular games... and people get worked up because one of the games slated is one of their favourites. :p Well that's boring because the early Mario games were good (not sure what ALL the fuss is about) and I haven't even played DKC 3. I bet it's just nostalgia you like that game for. Doesn't even look worth trying. Obviously I'm joking, just pissed off that you can slate Prime lol LOL. I have two things to say: 1. You should really play the whole DKC trilogy. It's worth it. 2. If you really want to slate Super Mario Galaxy, why don't you go ahead? That's what the thread's for. Early Mario I just don't get what sets them apart from other platformers at the time. I'll admit they are fun, but nothing stands out to me. Yeah, there's something that irks me here. I don't think there were any similar platformers at the time (I assume you mean NES). Care to say which platformers you're talking about? I'm curious, as I can't think of any, other than Megaman. And here's my list: Final Fantasy 7: I can't even say it's "very good". Just average. Twilight Princess: While I don't think it's bad, it certainly has a lot of issues. A bit overrated, methinks. Baten Kaitos: See TP. A Link to the Past: I couldn't get into this one. I don't know why, but it's just "meh". It's the worst (no, not even "least good") Zelda game I played. Of course, I didn't play the NES or CDi iterations. The Halo series: I don't get why this is popular. At least FF7 has the excuse of being the first mass-marketed RPG. There were several popular FPSes way before Halo. The GTA series: Not my type. I can see the appeal, but definitely not for me. Super Mario World & Yoshi's Island: Yes, you read that right. I can't even point flaws, though. They just bored me. Strangest thing is, I really liked Super Mario Land 2, which is somewhat similar to SMW. I can't think of any more right now. I'm sure I will, though.

Fair? not casual.. see I believe there are 2 different types of hard.. there is the super mario bros lost levels hard..where the general gameplay is tough or the super metroid hard.. where you have to backtrack and you never really know where your going hard.. this applies.. to resident evil, metroid and to a smaller extent castlevania and legend of zelda.. your the second
Goafer Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Yeah, there's something that irks me here. I don't think there were any similar platformers at the time (I assume you mean NES). Care to say which platformers you're talking about? I'm curious, as I can't think of any, other than Megaman. I meant anything before the N64 really, especially the 16 bit era (the early years of my gaming career!). I can appreciate that the NES version was probably groundbreaking, but the rest of the series is just a giant "meh" to me and I can't see how the series got its iconic status. Maybe it's just that they don't have the nostalgia factor for me since I missed them first time round. Who knows?
Emasher Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 (edited) Sonic Games (Including the early ones) I don't know why, I just never really liked them much. The speed was great where you had the speed bits, but this made the platforming feel very slippery. They didn't really feel like AAA titles to me either, they felt a little cheap tbh. And I don't really need to explain why I didn't like the new ones. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles The game was meant to be played with friends, but to do that, all your friends needed to have GBA - GCN cables and GBAs. I think I only ever played this with friends once, and it was a major hassle because we needed to get everything set up, find batteries for the GBAs (since they were the original ones) and then everyone had to learn how to play the game. And it was quite boring when it was your turn to hold that thing. Playing it in single player just didn't really work all that well I found. And it was much more fun just to play Melee or Double Dash with friends. Baten Kaitos I found it boring and I hated the battle system. It felt generic and there were a lot of gameplay mechanics that I didn't really like that felt like the were just trying to re-enforce the gimmick of the cards. Like having to have one of those blank cards to carry an egg to some guy in the next building over. Or having to have a certain card to go swing your sword at the enemy. I can see why some liked it, its just not for me. Edited May 7, 2009 by Emasher
Dyson Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Sorry, but the metroid series really is shit. I just don't get it. And yet I have MP1 2 and 3. I dunno why.
