Pancake Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 I don't want to support Google anymore, can anyone recommend a non-crap, non Google-powered search engine? Not Yahoo, their image search is really awful. I'm currently using ask.com, but it comes up short sometimes.

It's just a website, it's not like using it's going to fund terrorism or anything.
Cube Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 I Googled "search engine" the first result was: http://www.altavista.com/
Cube Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 I doubt YouTube would be much difference if Goggle didn't buy YouTube. The site still would have gone mainstream and would suffer from the same problems. If anything, YouTube would have been bled dry and left for dead if it didn't have Google's money.

That doesn't mean i have to support it. I'd wouldn't want to support ANY company practising censorship like they are. I'm sure it could have been a number of other random companies yeah, but so what. I'd feel the same whichever company it was. Censorship isn't inevitable, certain elements make it happen.
Pookiablo Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 Yeah, go with altavista, it's a good little search engine!
RoadKill Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Use google, surely by using google alone you're using their bandwidth and processor time, costing them money directly. Just never click their ads! I used to use altavista many years ago, the most convenient fact being you can just use av.com to get to it, an impressive shortcut

You're making them out to be communist china. You might as well not watch TV because the censor language there too.
Wesley Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 I love the way he wants a different search engine because of Google's "ethical" policy, but complains the competition is shit. :P Have fun getting crap results and trying to avoid Google tech around the web.

Wesley Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Oh no! Dogpile fetches results from Google, so it's bound to send traffic their way! Can't use that! The horror!
Kirkatronics Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Magic Taxi is a search engine where half their revenue goes to charity. Its powered by yahoo. I dont see your problem, its the best search egine there is as it harvests other search engines too.
Shorty Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 I stumbled upon a search engine once that was a bit different, it gave you previews of all the pages you searched for including highlights of where your search term showed up. I can't remember the name of it though >.< it had a black background.

Davey_T Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 http://www.blackle.com Save energy! Powered by google
Shorty Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 wasn't searchme.com? Yeah that's the one, and I just came here to say that after finding it again, eventually
Shino Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Let me just tell you utterly impossible it is to avoid google on the internet. Almost every site uses google analytics (even this forum) and many more use Google's api.
Emasher Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 What ads? Those ugly looking ads that say ads by google at the bottom.
Shorty Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Those ugly looking ads that say ads by google at the bottom. I know I say this all the time but... The internet still has ads? I'd forgotten, haven't seen any for so long adblock plus ftw.
Charlie Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Hilarious! Nah, i don't really have a prob with Yahoo, it's just that when i last used their image search it seemed to come up with soley flicker results (or however they spell it) on the first few pages at least, so i assumed they'd gone into partnership with them or something, which seemed a bit crap as far as image search goes. I prefer more random results. I don't doubt that. I'm just choosing to avoid them in one very direct way i can control. Yahoo own Flickr.
