Wesley Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 So what indie titles has everyone been playing? I've been trying to complete 4 minutes and 33 seconds by the guy who made Crayon Physics, but so far no luck. I'll try to complete it in a few months when everyone has hopefully forgot about it. Crayon Physics, by the by, was also a blast. Pretty fun, addictive and at times really shines.
Dyson Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Crayon Physics is a pretty awesome game. Played the demo and loved it. Affiliated with 2D Boy, people behind World of Goo right?
Wesley Posted February 8, 2009 Author Posted February 8, 2009 I didn't think it was actually. 2D Boy are the guys from EA and Crayon Physics is the Finnish game designer Petri Purho. It does use a Box2D engine though... maybe that's what you're thinking of. Well, I've been trying to complete 4 minutes and 33 seconds again. No luck. The aim of the game is to try and load this program without anyone else in the world loading it up in the same period of time - it connects to the internet to monitor this. The game takes 4 minutes and 33 second to load, and if someone else starts to play it then it stops loading. Quite fun. Based on the famous piece of music with the same name. My furthest so far: I, of course, loaded it straight after I got kicked off for revenge.
flameboy Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 (edited) Ok so in recent times there seems to have been an upsurge in so called Indie Games, small edible bite sized gaming experiences. Some take this bite sized element to new levels with little more than 5 minutes of gameplay. However they seem to justify themselves with messages and meaning that a lot of modern games do not get close to. Most may dismiss this is as hearsay and that they only try to make out as if they have this great profround meaning to cover up shoddy graphics and a lack of real gameplay. I'll let you decide for yourself with these games: Passage: http://hcsoftware.sourceforge.net/passage/ Needs to be downloaded. Perhaps one of THE most famous games and has drawn comparisons with Portal and other games in the past. Play through a few times and see how different choices can affect your path through life. Every day the same dream: http://www.molleindustria.org/everydaythesamedream/everydaythesamedream.html Flash based game. At first this can seem to most boring and mundane game with little purpose, however stick at playing it and eventually the rewards are there to be had. The impact of the last minute of gameplay cannot be described as it leaves you pondering what has been before. Kenney's Bite Sized Non-Adventure, Part 1: Watch a movie. http://www.kenney.nl/game.php?id=kenney_part1 Again a game where not a lot happens, just stick with it and reach the end its all worth it for THAT song which made my face light up with childish glee. Even has slight replay value as well... Runner: http://www.destructoid.com/runner-a-game-made-by-dtoid-staff-members-is-now-playable-129297.phtml Needs to be downloaded. Created by dtoid staff and friends and for anyone who has ever been in a relationship/love it is a MUST play. So there's a few of my little picks, do you think these kind of games have any kind of merits on the level I'm attributing to them, or do would you rather play your next gen games and leave the thinking to the philiosophers? Also anyone got any other games they'd like to throw into the ring? I am hoping to turn this into an article on lethargic gamers so any viewpoints, opinions or other such stuff is greatly appreciated. Edited December 23, 2009 by flameboy
Shino Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Someone's been reading Anthony's Burch articles. :P I've tried The Passage before and its not for me, I like the concept but its just not entertaining. Played Runner when he released it, its better than The Passage in terms of fun and its easier to grasp what it is trying to do, although obviously amateur. My type of Indie games are usually the ones that don't overlap with "art" games.
Cube Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 I've been told that I MA3D A GAM3 WIT Z0MB1ES INNT! is a good Indie game.
Mundi Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 I've been told that I MA3D A GAM3 WIT Z0MB1ES INNT! is a good Indie game. It is worth the low price of it. But it is something I do not play often, it is mostly the music I think of when I play the game.

I am a long term fan of Anthony Burch I have to admit, however havn't been reading much of his stuff recent. It's just something I've found myself playing a ton recently and these kinda experiences that are quick and "throwaway" do lend themselves this to kind of thought. I'm interested to hear what games you play that don't go down the art route. Just to throw another game out there: http://www.adamatomic.com/canabalt/ I'm positively hooked on this game, it doesn't so much have any artsy questions or allude to anything bigger. Has a "unique" graphical style and is rollicking good game.
Sméagol Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 One that I still intend to download sometime is [The Path], allthough it appears to be more experience than game, but is has a bit of a horror/fairytale theme going on, and I liked the sound of that. IGN has a review somewhere on their site.

Mundi Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Eversion: A mario style platformer with a twist. You should really play before finding out what is different about it http://zarat.us/tra/offline-games/eversion.html Also people should download the trial for Lights End on Xbox live. It has an interesting concept, but it is so bad that it is hilarious, I want to buy the full version just so I can laugh at it.
Emasher Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 (edited) Are we just talking about small meaningful indie games, or all indie games? In the case of All indie games: Sauerbraten: A free independently made FPS game with a strong online component. http://sauerbraten.org/ Its basically the game that was made to showcase the cube 2 engine, which has a unique sort of level editor, and is great for anyone who's interested in working on level design. There are a few other indie games based on the technology, but this is the one thats mainly worth mentioning. Although, here's a link to one of the others: http://www.bloodfrontier.com/ Edited December 23, 2009 by Emasher

Wesley Posted December 24, 2009 Author Posted December 24, 2009 I tried doing a thread like this. http://n-europe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23853 I failed.

Its about the battle of good versus evil, and your fighting on the side of good. Its quite hard, but you'll get the hang of it. Weird twist at the end. Didn't want to spoil the ending. You get a massive badly drawn white tick on a black background when your done. Edited December 27, 2009 by Kirkatronics
Shorty Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 I tried doing a thread like this. http://n-europe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23853 I failed. Since Kirk decided to post in that thread and bump it from 7 months ago ( ¬_¬ ) I decided to merge the two. There you go, now it looks like you succeeded!

There you go, now it looks like you succeeded! Finally! I'm going to do well in life! And I guess now you'd be able to complete 4 minutes 33 seconds... it's 7 months old. But... at the time it was fun! This is the guy's blog by the way: http://www.kloonigames.com/blog/ So... I guess I play most of my indie games on the iPhone now... I've been playing, and just completed, Brian a few days ago. It was actually one of my lecturer's initial PC games, with art done by an old student on my course. She then decided to learn iPhone programming and put it out there. http://www.appsafari.com/games/10362/brian/
flameboy Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/463241 super meat boy, sure people have heard about it, been playing the flash version, is amazing and really addictive.
Ashley Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 Played it a while ago. Fun. Although I sucked at it. They gave me a cool comic thing though which made me laugh. ME! A vegetarian :p
flameboy Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 the guys over at http://www.crayonphysics.com/ are offering the game for however much you want to pay. I paid 49p because that is all I had in my bank account till I get paid on 15th which is also when the deal ends. I played the demo before and it is a cracking game
Sméagol Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 I've just read [a review] on [VVVVV], I think it looks really cool. You can see a video of the gameplay on [the site of the (I believe 1-man) studio]. (might just as well embed it here)
Pit-Jr Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Hmmm, after trying out some of these, i have the urge to run out and buy as many evil corporate-published games as i can carry
flameboy Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 May I recmommend this: http://www.firstpersontetris.com/ A total mind fuck at first but just as addictive as every version of tetris.
