I'm not really that big a gamer, I play my PS2 and DS every so often - I'm not really up to date with new releases and stuff.

I really enjoy RPGs. I loved the Final Fantasy series, Kingdom Hearts, Star Ocean III, Tales of Symphonia (on Paj's Gamecube) etc etc.

I'm looking for a new PS2 RPG, that is actually good. I bought Makai Kingdom and Altrir Iris III (sp?) recently, neither of which I particularly liked and I got bored of both quickly.

Suggestions please. (Oh, and I can only do PAL, if that makes a difference - I'm not good enough to do the other regions)

Dragon Quest VIII

Shin Megami Tensei Persona 3 FES and Persona 4

Disgaea 1&2, although they're a Strategy RPG like Advance Wars, but more story.

Odin Sphere I've heard good things about.

Suikoden series (there's 5. 2 is the best, or so I've heard)

More to come

Buy Persona 3:FES right now, then when you've beat it, get hold of Persona 4, which comes out in March. :)

Sounds good, but I hate shit-looking graphics.

I know it's not an RPG but I like some of those games you mentioned so you might like Yakuza.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

Shit looking graphics? The game looks fine and is one of the best on the system. If you're gonna just push it off, then you shouldn't really ask to play rpgs :p also the game has quite mature content and themes.

I'm going to recommend the one I always mention! Dragon Quest VIII (Journey of the Cursed King). It's colourful and cartoony with loads of humour and the soundtrack is amazing. You can hear all the trombones and string instruments. Beautiful.

You seem to like the same kind of RPGs as I do, so I'd definitely suggest the Shadow Hearts series. It features turn-based gameplay like Final Fantasy, but with the twist of having the 'judgement ring' coupled to just about every move you make. It might sound odd at first, but you basically need good reflexes to execute attacks, stopping gameplay from getting stale.

The first game in the series is a bit rare these days and might feel a little old compared to recent RPGs, while the second game (Covenant) easily stands up against Final Fantasy titles.

Shadow Hearts is basically set in the real world but with a demonic and fantasy storyline - some of the locations are recognisable and some of the characters are loosely based on real people (e.g. Roger Bacon). It's a great series, although the third and last title in the series features completely different characters and perhaps isn't as highly regarded as the first two. It's a bit of a spin-off.

It may be hard to find some of the games so I recommend getting a Memor32 (a 32MB memory card you just load some software onto with a USB lead, very easy). This'll let you play any import games.

Oh yeah, and definitely this. It'll be easy to find for a cheap price and it's excellent. It's a perfected RPG in the traditional sense and an amazing game. It's harder than average and needs quite a bit of time put in compared to many RPGs.

You could probably get Grandia II on PS2. Easily one of my favourite RPGs ever. Brilliant game.

Ugh. The PS2 port is just bad compared to the DC original, of course it looks like a lump of gold compared to the horrid PC port.

Paper Mario TTYD! Sounds obscure from the ones mentioned but it's one of my favourite RPGs, granted I haven't played many. But yeah, the characters are great, brilliant dialogue and beautiful as well. Better than the N64 one by a mile.

Shadow Hears 1 + 2

Number one got quite harsh reviews but I enjoyed it alot. Number 2 is pure win, much improved graphics and voiceovers... Love the game <3

Heard there is a third out, but no Yugi = gtfo

Just saying, if you has access to a GC then you may as well buy as buy it. Nobody I know hasn't liked it and it's obviously different to most RPGs. I get bored if I play RPGs that are similar to each other.

I couldn't even tell the difference between the two. I thought they were, and looked, exactly the same.

Ar Tonelico is a great out of the ordinary RPG. Radiata Stories is great as well, made by the Star Ocean time. Those are import only though. If you choose to get import after all, get Tales of the Abyss, made by team behind Symphonia.

Of PAL game that hasn't been recommended;Rogue Galaxy has similar battle system to Kingdom Hearts and Tales-series, cel-shaded graphics and almost no loading times. You can enter and leave as many cities, houses, menues, battles and dungeons you want without ever having to load.

You may enjoy Steambot Chronicles and Okami also, they're more action adventure, but very playable and fun.

I've heard things about the .hack series. Mainly that it's a lot of grinding.

I've got Part 1 of the .hack series. It's not too bad. Each game comes with a short anime film, so this probably isn't one to recommend for non-anime fans.

Not only that, but the other 3 parts are probably the same game with nothing significantly new added. Like Bandai just coughed them up at an attempt for some money.

Doesn't stop me from wanting to look for the remaining games for cheap, though. I fancy completing the game, tbh.

Paj has lent me his gamecube, so I'm replaying Tales Of Symphonia at the moment.

Loves being a massive bastard to Genis and Collette, since I hate them both.

After I complete it, I'll pick up a new RPG. Thanks for all the suggestions.
