Caris
I need your advice. I'll be starting full time work very soon and I'm gonna invest in a car with me recently passing my test, now i don't know much about cars (well not in depth anyhow) so Im gonna need your help. Basically i want a car that has amazing miles per gallon with the price of Petrol going up. I'm not bothered about a sporty little number, also even though this defeats what i just said. What are Jeeps like for running costs? I know there gonna be more than say a Clio but how much more? Like tons or just a bit? I generally would take advantage of the space in a Jeep as i take my bike and other peoples everywhere all the time and it's a nightmare in my mam's Fiesta. Also my dad only has a MR2 so he borrows our car all the time for transporting big(ish) stuff. Lastly what will the insurance be like on a Jeep compared to again something like a Clio? Jeeps arn't really sporty and i obviously would get something second hand so would it be okay or would the insurance people just rape me? So yeah, help! Mr-Paul
Insurance will rape you on anything with more than a one litre engine. Heck, insurance will rape you whatever you get, because you're male. Unless you have endless amounts of money, get something second hand with a 1 litre engine.
MoogleViper
What mr-paul said about insurance. But if you do need that extra space then you would be better of with a 1.6-1.8 litre estate car. It will do more miles to the gallon and the insurance will be less. And you could get more for your money than a 4x4. And there would be plenty of space for you bike. Caris
Yeah, i have been looking at focuses to be fair. So what would a Focus be like to run compared to a small car, I'm talking MPG.

Twozzok
If you need space for you bike, get any car and install a bike rack onto the .boot.
Noodleman
Assuming you're under 21 you'll struggle to get insurance on a Focus it certainly wont be less than £1500 unless you commit a bit of light insurance fraud and get it insured in your parents name and be added as a named driver. Caris
@ Moggle, no a standard Focus. @ Twozzok, why do that when i could just buy a car suitable for my needs? bike racks are a pain to set up every time and trash your car. @ Noodleman, how is that fraud? I'm on my mams insurance now and it's perfectly legal.
Mr-Paul
What I did is have my mum own the car (peugeot 106), but have me down as the main driver. My insurance is about £700, and it's my first year of driving. If I was down as the owner of the car and without my mum on the policy, it would have been at least £2000, just to insure me on a peugeot 106. Noodleman
@ Noodleman, how is that fraud? I'm on my mams insurance now and it's perfectly legal. Because the car is registered in your name and the insurance is supposed to be taken out by the main person who drives the car. Admitadly every one does it when they are younger, but if you make a claim and the insurance company finds out its actualy your car and not your mums they are entitled to refuse to pay out. Caris
@ Paul Yeah that's what i would do, it's what I'm doing now. @ Noodleman, well i just get my mam to buy the car (give her the money), simple as that haha. legal then.
MoogleViper
My mate has been driving a 2.5T Mazda estate. It's his dad's company car so the fully comp insurance is free to him. He's now bought a 1.6 05 focus and will be putting as his dad's company car. I reckon if you get a 1.4 focus you might get away with insurance as a named driver. Hellfire
Ford has my fave cars, Focus and Mondeo are awesome, Renault also has amazing cars and both Honda Civics are awesome, the smaller one being one of my favourite cars around. Here in portugal the small one isn't hybrid yet unfortunately. I honestly think that buying a car right now that's not hybrid seems very weird, but there's not much to choose from unfortunately. A 1.4 Focus would be a good bet I suppose, Fiesta probably doesn't consume a lot, but I don't have anything backing it up.
LegoMan1031
I used to own a fiesta (52 reg), i now own a focus (07 reg). My focus has a 1.6l engine. To fill the tank full it cost me about £51!!!!!!!!!!!! I got insurance on it WITH 2 years no claims and it still come to just over £1000. My first quote with my 1.4l fiesta was £1800 (these quotes are for fully comp) I'm 20 yrs old btw Costly business being a young male driver! Try living in Northern Ireland, insurance is nearly double. I'm taking the bus for a while I think. ^___^ Focuses are awesome. my da has the c-max. HUGE car (2l). Although it is group 10 insurance! Probably not really conceivable for you at the mo. My mum has a 1ltr yaris. Its group 1. She said she'd prefer a 1.2/4 just because of the simple fact: You go on a motorway and your engine starts to struggle 65+mph.

All you do is swear blind that the main driver is the main driver, and the actual driver was in it for one of the few times that they used it. tapedeck
Even though it's more expensive to get your OWN insurance (rather than being a named driver) it's possibly worth it in the long run to say you have "x" amount of years as an insured driver. It's probably worth getting a cheap run around car for your first few years (bumps can happen afterall - from other drivers aswell.) And they wont matter if you know the car aint an expensive one. I had a 2ltr Golf when I was 20 and it cost me nearly £2000 a year. Now I have a micra and the money I save means I can actually drive more and enjoy it without the worry of cost/bumps etc... Just get a 1ltr engine or like others have said slightly larger for motorway driving (if you do lots of it.)

So you don't get absolutely fucked in the ass by insurance costs for a larger car?

Jeeps arn't really sporty and i obviously would get something second hand so would it be okay or would the insurance people just rape me? So yeah, help! A Jeep will cost a hell of alot more than a Clio to run, both in petrol, insurance and tax. It's not worth it. For the last year I've been a named driver on my mum's car with Direct Line and insurance was about £1800 in total for a 1.2l. Although there were 4 drivers on the car, me being 18 and the time and my brother being 20 it was quite high. We've now got a no claims bonus and we're with MoreThan and insurance is £700 a year. As someone else said, it's probably worth it in the long run to be the main driver as you'll get your no claims bonus which makes a massive difference to your insurance.
