Emasher
Yes, but it will have the same effect on these people's lives. All they know is their tribe, all we really know is our world. Yes its a grander scale, but its basically the only thing we can compare it to. @ the War of the Worlds thing. Just because its In a movie, doesn't make it impossible. I think we're safe to assume that they will probably have different diseases as us. Plus I haven't even seen War of the Worlds.
Shino
The War of the Worlds end with aliens defeated accidentally by a common virus, its stupid to think that species capable of interstellar travel wouldn't have thought of that, or even that they are susceptible to our virus. This applies here because the first thing we would do when contacting the tribe would be to vaccinate them. As for the rest, I still is think they would be affected for the better. But it happened before, that a new tribe was discovered and some people there died from a simple cold. Just let them be. They've been living like this for centuries and seem to be doing very well for themselves. Introducing technology would just ruin everything they have and everything they are used to. MoogleViper
And the alien disease idea is so War of the Worlds it makes me cry. And the fact that thousands of native Americans were wiped out by the common cold when we first made contact?
Patch
How would we like it though if aliens came to us and basically told us that we are one of the few life sustaining planets in the milky way galaxy that has not already developed inter stelar(sp) transportation and isn't part of this whole alliance of planets and they gave us a whole load of their technology. Sure, perhaps us tech smart people would be able to cope but the governments and such would have to quickly make new laws about it, many people wouldn't be able to cope with all this new stuff. Everything as we know it would be pretty much useless. Many people would die of diseases the aliens brought here. Airports would be exchanged for space ports and people would leave for other planets. Aliens would come an live here or just visit among us. Many companies would die (including all the gaming companies most likely) because the alien's technology would be so much better. School curriculums would need to be completely changed in a hurry. Everyone would be trying to learn new alien languages so we could go visit other planets. Everything would just be a mess. There would be all kinds of prejudice between us and the aliens. Although, we would get some pretty sweet technology out of it...so its all good. Am I wrong for thinking most of that sounds awesome? I would love to know what the tribe thought of the helicopter (plane?). Was it: 1) One of their gods come down from heaven to give them a sign? 2) A never-before-seen creature hunting them? 3) A rival tribe using some kind of magic? They might have held some emergency council meeting afterwards. Who knows what defensive measures they have taken since the event. They might be off right now inventing an even sharper stick. Well they were shooting it with arrows, so I bet they didn't like the plane. =P I think there's a lot of mentions of big birds in mythology of these kind of tribes, and the bird is usually not a good thing. Also, apparently all the women and children had run off into the jungle when the plane flew over, while the men protected the village. It's likely they will move away and go live somewhere else in the jungle now.
Jonnas
To the War of the Worlds analogy to make sense, it would go like this: -Two hunters go to the village, intent on killing them and taking their lands; -Out of 10 villagers, only 3 or 4 survive; -The hunters are inflicted with Malaria (or some other tropical disease), and die before managing to kill the rest of them. I don't know if there's a tropical disease that kills so quickly, but that sounds like War of the Worlds, American Tribe edition. - Shino, think a little more on what would take to help them with their health. You would have to: -Learn their language; -Vaccine them against many of our common diseases; -Actually convince them that sticking a needle in your arm is good for your health; -When they start to reach their 40s/50s, they would need to take pills regularly, or go frequently to the hospital. Pretty much goes against their instincts and habits. - And the Alien analogy isn't that far off. If a UFO appeared, it would be approached with fear, attacked if it looked hostile, and our "elders" and "tribe chiefs" (NATO, World/Nation leaders) would decide what to do about this mysterious thing. When/If the language barrier was broken, we would have Aliens saying we should be able to live until our 120s, but to do that we would have to be tubed for days, or some other unpleasant procedure. These procedures would also be necessary to prevent their very minor, yet common disease, the "Kunami" (or whatever), that was brought by one of them. By the time we started to reach our 90s, we would have to start getting treatment in facilities in their planet, and we would eventually leave the Earth, all this because Aliens thought we weren't advanced enough. Patch
Well they were shooting it with arrows, so I bet they didn't like the plane. =P Oh yeah. Revised: 1. One of their demon gods come up from hell to give them a punishment? Also, apparently all the women and children had run off into the jungle when the plane flew over, while the men protected the village. It's likely they will move away and go live somewhere else in the jungle now. Yep, even the smallest, most innocent of contacts can make big impacts, like ripples in a pond. For generations to come, fathers will pass on to their children the tale of this fateful day when they chased a dragon out of the skies.

QFT - that's exactly what I think. To assume that our way of life is better and that they would be much happier with it is complete arrogance

The fish
I don't know if there's a tropical disease that kills so quickly, but that sounds like War of the Worlds, American Tribe edition. Ebola? It, along with HIV and Rabies, will almost certainly kill humans. The only reason we're not all dead is because it kills very, very quickly (HIV/AIDS is a slower, and only spread widely after the building of roads in the middle of Africa, so people could travel far before dying). Anyway, I digress. I say leave 'em be.

mcj metroid
What's wrong with it? (on this story) They haven't been subjective, they haven't written how the labour government has ruined life for the middle classes. In fact I thought it was quite good. If you didn't know then you wouldn't have been able to guess it was from the daily mail. 'The jungle is fundamental to their lives and survival. It's their home, their source of food, the source of their culture etc. Without it, they could not exist as a people.' i think you could.
