martinist Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 i'm waiting for somebody to change the title to "local erections"
gaggle64 Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Here's the problem with British politics today: You have the Labour party, who should support the poor but don't, the Conservative party, who claim to support the poor but won't, and the Lib Dems, who would support the poor but are still far too devoid of any charisma to actually get elected. All of a sudden radical Islamisation actually sounds like a good laugh.
Daft Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Boris wins. His speech was reassuring. I think he has really matured over the campaign. I look forward to seeing what he does.
killthenet Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 WTF??? How the hell does such a babbling buffoon win a mayoral election?? It could all be down to the 10p tax rate and Ken's association with Labour, but still. Can you imagine Boris giving a speech if there is another terrorist attack? This along with the council results seems to suggest that there is change in the air. But one good thing that will come out of a Tory rule is that we might actually get some decent innovative British music.
Gizmo Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 Britain needed an "Arnie" type figure. Someone people voted in for a bit of a laugh, but I bet he ends up doing not bad.
gaggle64 Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 Or he'll turn out to be the bumbling, tactless, morally fragile idiot he has been up until this point.
Sheikah Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 People have short memeories if they hate Labour over conservative. Remember that people ONLY look at what governments do wrong, the nagtives, and although there is a lot to complain about; things would be a lot worse under the C's! A lot worse! But having a long memory about a party 30 years ago isn't exactly going to reflect what they're going to be like now. Also, Labour gave us top-up fees. The bastards. Conservatives won here in Trafford as usual, by a long shot.
ipaul Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 Well Labour have done truly awful then and to be honest I'm not surprised. I don't think anyone is. North Tyneside is now conservative controlled, doubt it will make any difference to me at all of course but still. Although I would describe myself as 'left wing' I'm not at all dissapointed that Labour did so badly, they have only themselves to blame. I do not like Gordon Brown one bit and think he is doing a terrible job at the moment as PM. Hopefully he can start to do well after this but I doubt it. In my opinion, Labour are a complete shambles at the moment and need to find some kind of identity. I am however dissapointed that Boris Johnson is now mayor of London. I actually quite liked Ken Livingstone as politicians go, he seemed to me to be a good mayor =/
Moohawk! Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 Ahh I know he's funny with his extreme views on things but he's not exactly someone you want in any kind of power position really. You watch it, in ten years we'll go the way of America and sodding Catherine Tate will be mayor of London or someone similar. Face it. Boris is only in this position because people find his eccentricities warming.
Zechs Merquise Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 I find it highly bizarre that anyone could've thought that Livingstone was anything but a crook. He surrounded himself with corrupt horrible people like Lee Jasper and paid the price.
DomJcg Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 Funky quotes from boris "Try as I might I could not look at an overhead projection of a growth-profit matrix and stay conscious" - on his week-long career in management consultancy "Voting Tory will cause your wife to have bigger breasts and increase your chances of owning a BMW M3" - on the campaign trail in 2004 "If I was in charge I would get rid of Jamie Oliver and tell people to eat what they like" - striking a blow for the right to eat pies at the 2006 Tory conference. He later described Oliver as a "national saint" "I think if I made a huge effort always to have a snappy, inspiring soundbite on my lips, I think the sheer mental strain of that would be such that I would explode" - on his unique political style "I think I was once given cocaine but I sneezed and so it did not go up my nose. In fact, I may have been doing icing sugar" - after being questioned on Have I Got News for You about drug use "I will add Papua New Guinea to my global itinerary of apology" - after suggesting the country was known for "chief-killing and cannibalism" "I have not had an affair with Petronella. It is complete balderdash. It is an inverted pyramid of piffle" - on press reports of his relationship with Ms Wyatt
Jamba Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 I find it hard to think of reasons why people would want to elect Boris. Can someone give me a serious reason or evidence as to why he's a good candidate (you konw something that would actually lead to him making good decisions)? No "he's funny!" responses pls.
or else you will DIE Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 Because he is hilarious and we need hilarious people in charge.
killthenet Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 No, we need people who know what they're doing and Livingstone was great at what he did. Thanks to him the transport system is fantastic and it was a system that he used and supported himself, he was great at negotiating with the people of London and sadly things will now only go downhill.
BlueStar Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 Well Labour have done truly awful then and to be honest I'm not surprised. I don't think anyone is. North Tyneside is now conservative controlled But still has a Labour mayor, so a tory controlled council is only going to have so much sway.
MoogleViper Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 Jordan you are talking so much shit! How old was you befire Labour? Do you know much about world politics or the history of politics in this country! All governments lye, corrupt and spin! They always will. Partly for security, partly to keep people at ease, partly to keep themselevs in power. This isn't a new way of governing labour created. Tax the poor? Everyone's taxed, and although there's been some big errors I gernerally agree with tax in a big way, I have major socialist beliefs; I personally would be better off under the C's but I would rather live in a fairer society; remember under the C's the gap between the richest and the poorest was at its biggest - the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. benefits to those who don't need it. Care to ellaborate? And I would suggest stop reading the Daily Mail. 1) Yes governments are corrupt and yes they lie. But I'd say the two biggest offenders are the two biggest parties. They have so much power that they are more corrupt. It's about time people started looking elsewhere. 2) Either you are ignorant, naive or live in an upper class area. If you spent 1 week in Nottinghamshire for example you would know that it is true. There are a lot of people on benefits that don't need them. In my old hometown I once saw somebody pull up into the car park in a new car that was most likely paid for with taxpayer's money. Get a walking stick out of the car, walk perfectly carrying the stick but as soon as he got into the market square he suddenly needed the walking stick. One of my cousins friend's dad is on fat waster who is on disability benefits yet there is a plaque up for him at my cousin's old primary school thanking him for putting up a fence. In the village where i go to school one of my friend's next door neighbours is on disability benefits for his bad back yet my friend saw him on his roof putting new tiles on. Here's the problem with British politics today: You have the Labour party, who should support the poor but don't, the Conservative party, who claim to support the poor but won't, and the Lib Dems, who would support the poor but are still far too devoid of any charisma to actually get elected. All of a sudden radical Islamisation actually sounds like a good laugh. Excellent post. Couldn't agree more. Because he is hilarious and we need hilarious people in charge. No we need intelligent people in charge. Opinions like this are partly what's wrong with this country.
or else you will DIE Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 No, we need people who know what they're doing and Livingstone was great at what he did. Thanks to him the transport system is fantastic and it was a system that he used and supported himself, he was great at negotiating with the people of London and sadly things will now only go downhill. Oh get the fuck out of here! No we need intelligent people in charge. Opinions like this are partly what's wrong with this country. I disagree. People are too serious these days, it's good to have someone like this actually in charge.
killthenet Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 Explain to me two things. 1) Why is it good to have a babbling buffoon with no real policies who just postured to get the position a good thing? 2) What exactly is wrong with the transport system in London and how do you see Boris improving it?
BlueStar Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 Boris becoming mayor of London reminds me of something similar which happened up here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/1965569.stm
killthenet Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 The mascot's vote-winning slogan was "free bananas for schoolchildren". That's incredible! Wish he'd been running in London, he would have got at least as many votes as Paddick.
DomJcg Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 2) What exactly is wrong with the transport system in London and how do you see Boris improving it? You do know he greatly hinted of asking ken to be on the mayor's team don't you? i wouldn't be suprised if ken returned as transport director "Mr Johnson told Mr Livingstone he hoped to "discover a way in which the mayoralty can continue to benefit from your transparent love of London". "
Jamba Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 I disagree. People are too serious these days, it's good to have someone like this actually in charge. Right, so someone who mocks the system and whose priorities are making funny comments and promoting his comedic image over actual politics is, in your opinion, someone who should be elected in the publics best interest?
