somme Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 I thought as someone posted a Kanye West/Daft Punk thread we could have another one with lots of other artists that have covered songs and express our opinion on which we think is better - cover or original? Here's a few decent covers Placebo have done, which do you prefer? DADDY COOL - Boney M (Original) RUNNING UP THAT HILL - Kate Bush (Original) JOHNNY AND MARY - Placebo (Cover) There's a few. Which is better?
Shorty Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Well, unfortunately I don't have time to listen to those, but AFI's covers of NIN's "Head Like a Hole" and The Cure's "Just Like Heaven" are both improvements. And as jayseven will agree with, Johnny Cash's cover of NIN's "Hurt" is far superior to the original, as admitted by Reznor. One that I struggle with is The Postal Service - "Such Great Heights". It's a great track, quite upbeat. But take Iron and Wine's significantly slowed down version... a really sad mellow and beautiful track. Tricky to decide. I reccomend checking them out Of course, there are far more occasions where the cover artists get it wrong. McFly covering Queen, anyone?
killthenet Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 The Fall's cover of "Victoria" by The Kinks; Kaito's cover of "The Marshalls Are Dead" by Bloc Party; !!!'s cover of "Take Ecstacy With Me" by The Magnetic Fields; Schneider TM's cover of "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" by The Smiths; The Slit's cover of "Heard It On The Grapevine". All superior to the original versions. Other noteworthy covers - My Bloody Valentine's cover of "Map Ref..." by Wire; Casiotone's cover of "When Your Were Mine" by Prince; The Fall's cover of R.Dean Taylor's "There's A Ghost In My House"; Electrelane's covers of "No Fun" by The Stooges & "More Than This" by Roxy Music.
Guest bluey Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 there are so many covers and sound borrowing songs now that i hardly notice O_o
Shorty Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 I don't think a basic camera/computer mic or whatever she's using there is doing her singing ability justice in that video....
Gizmo Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 One that comes to mind is Institutionalized, I prefer the Senses Fail cover to the Suicidal Tendencies original (though I think I'm in the minority on that one).
Guest bluey Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 I don't think a basic camera/computer mic or whatever she's using there is doing her singing ability justice in that video.... this is a reeeally early video before she got more famous... i saw her first UK show - she's fantastic live.. i just thought this was a nice spin on a song i otherwise didn't care for at all. question: do you think it's better to cover a song by or doing something new with it a la the terra video i've posted..?
somme Posted February 22, 2008 Author Posted February 22, 2008 question: do you think it's better to cover a song by or doing something new with it a la the terra video i've posted..? What's the point in covering a song and then not changing anything? Just a waste of time.
ipaul Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 I think all covers, every single one of them, is a waste of time. The amount of covers floating around nowadays is a joke, especially when songs which are only a year are two old are being remixed.
Guest bluey Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 What's the point in covering a song and then not changing anything? Just a waste of time. i guess... but you could also say "why not just write your own songs?"
Domstercool Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Guess I prefer Metallica's Whiskey In a Jar to the Thin Lizzy version.
Gizmo Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Anyone heard of The String Quartet? They do cover versions of rock band albums. I have one of Muse and one of Senses Fail, pretty awesome. All done on violins etc. Oh and if anyone mentions Amy fucking Winehouse in this thread I will shoot them in the face.
mr_bogus Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Placebo's version of "Running Up That Hill" is drop dead amazing. I like Kate's as well, but will give Placebo the thumbs up since hers now sounds quite dated & 80's. Ever heard Tori Amos's version of "Smells like Teen Spirit"? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWnuYzH7QfY
Wesley Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Jeff Buckley's cover of Hallelujah is better Than Leonard Cohen's original. So much feeeeeeling. Leonard Cohen - tour this year!
Charlie Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Some covers are better and others aren't... Johnny Cash's 'Hurt' is far far far better than the original Nine Inch Nail version.
shaq365 Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Can't forget Hendrix's "All Along The Watchtower"...
Wesley Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 John Cale's Heart Break Hotel... maybe. Although I feel I should be shot for going against The King like that.
Haver Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Also: the "Ruby Tuesday" cover used in Children of Men, by Franco Battiato
jayseven Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Zeromancer's cover of "Send Me An Angel" (from australian band Real Life, iirc) is way cooler... That's all I can think of...
Intensity Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Jimi Hendrix Version > Bob Dylan Version In regards to 'All Along The Watchtower'... Seal's Version > Steve Miller Band's Version In regards to 'Fly Like An Eagle'... Nirvanas Version > David Bowie's Version In regards to 'The Man Who Sold The World'...
Wesley Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Also: the "Ruby Tuesday" cover used in Children of Men, by Franco Battiato I second! Nirvanas Version > David Bowie's Version In regards to 'The Man Who Sold The World'... I second! Man this thread makes me wanna listen to music all night.
or else you will DIE Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 9.9/10 the original is always better. Bands shouldn't be allowed to record covers.
Dan_Dare Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 A good cover or remix should bring out a new personality to the song. Saying they're all shit is retarded considering Jeff Buckley and Jonny Cash's efforts are already in the thread.
gmac Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Futureheads cover of Kate Bush "Hounds of Love" is great
